IF Michigan stays putrid, how long will it......

If they never win another game in my lifetime, my children's lifetime, and their children's lifetime (assuming they have children) it will be a good start to their losing streak.

Well, the Wolverine is one of those rare animals that eats their young. They have that going for them...

My sentiments on the issue are known by most of the regulars. Until Wisconsin, or Iowa, or Little Brother puts together enough strong seasons to earn the Big 10 the national rep they need to remain at or near the top of bowl/media/computer consideration I am not anxious to see Michigan continue to suck.

Academically, Michigan adds much to the reputation of the Big 10. In a very real sense it is a value added to any degree from any other Big 10 school, just as the recent academic improvement at Ohio state strengthens all other Big 10 schools and degrees. More importantly, the resources that all Big 10 schools share help attract bigger academic names, more research dollars (which helps create more jobs in a region desperate for them) and more national recognition.

Like it or not, you -- and universities -- are measured by the company you and they keep. And like it or not playing a strong Buckeye team playing a strong Michigan team at the end of the season helps both schools.

Then let's shit can Michigan in favor of the real Harvard. Better academics and just as many bullshit national championships from the leather helmet days. Plus I hear that they can play defense....

There seems to be a bit of schizophrenia among BP on this issue. On the one hand, there was immeasurable hand-wringing, teeth-gnashing and irritable bowel syndrome over what the move to Big Ten divisions and a championship game would do to The Game. Conversely, many seem to feel that Michigan masquerading as IU for another decade would have no impact on the greatest rivalry in college athletics.

Very good point. But no schizophrenia here with me at least. It's bad for the rivalry if M*ch*g*n doesn't at least field competitive teams. The divisional alignments are bad for the rivalry as well, but I did my ranting about that already and now what's done is done. Now, can I sit here and say it's not extremely amusing watching those bastards up north flounder the way they are? No, I can't say that. It is extremely amusing, fun in fact. But my head knows that we (TOSU) and we, (Big Ten+2) need M*ch*g*n back to being M*ch*g*n. It has to mean something to beat them. Just my imo...

Personally, I don't want the rivalry to be great - I want Ohio State to win The Game every single year. Why would I want Michigan to win once in a while just for the sake of the rivalry? And beating Michigan is just as fun regardless of whether they are great (2006) or completely incompetent (2008).

Besides, Michigan's not our biggest rival anyway - Ohio University is.

I thought Ohio's BCS team was, but we're just too scared to play them every year.

FWIW, I don't necessarily want to see Michigan win. I just think that all is right in the Big Ten and the college football universe when Ohio State and Michigan are top 5 programs playing for Big Ten championships, Rose Bowls and national championship possibilities. As fun as this run has been, I'm also looking forward to the day that we get true payback for 69 and 96, and wrench the great season out from under them.

I am with LJB on this all the way.

All is right in my college football universe when scUM is losing/being humiliated in any way, shape or form. I could forgo the pleasure of revenge for '69 and '96 if the alternative was to see them have a Notre Dame like 15-20 year period of complete and utter FAIL.

And so you count the days until the next Indiana game? You wish Indiana was the final game of every season? You measure a coach by how many times he beats Indiana? And Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, they self implode damned near every weekend from September to November.

I love beating Michigan. The 90s were pure torture and I'm savoring the 00s, but as Indiana proves, it takes a second equal party to make a rivalry.

But how would one quantify that equality? Are you suggesting that, in order to preserve the rivalry, Ohio State ought to lose every once in a while? I'd love to have Ohio State win the next 100 games against Michigan, the Buckeyes never need to lose again and I'd be okay with that.

Or do you suggest that Michigan somehow needs to just have more than a pulse and then we can go 100-0 on them for the next century? I get that "rivalry" is usually a give and take, but I am a fan of Ohio State football, The Game is simply a vehicle for maximum enjoyment of Ohio State football.

Then I guess I don't want a rivalry game after all....

I'll settle for unconditional surrender.

OK, so why is it the greatest rivalry in college football? You holding your breath to see who wins the barrel of hooch when Tennessee lines up against Kentucky? Of course not because there's no there there. Look at the other "big rivalry games," Alabama - Auburn, Texas -Texas A&M, USC - UCLA and it is either the imbalance between team A and Team B, or the fact that the game is seldom "for all the marbles": Cal - Stanford, Florida - Georgia, Northwestern - Illinois, Indiana - Purdue, Washington - Washington State, Army - Navy, Oregon - Oregon State, Boise State - TCU

OK, the last one was just to see if you're paying attention...

If IU fans matched scUM fans in general douchebaggery, then we probably would.

I understand your point. I'll say something that I think sums up my view point on The Game. The Yankees and Red Sox have what is considered to be a great rivalry as well. For nearly 100 years, the Yankees thoroughly dominated that saga. I would have no qualms if Ohio State accomplished that.

There are great rivalries in college football. But I just want the Buckeyes to be great.
