I stand with Jim Tressel - How Firm Thy Friendship

Apache;1886293; said:
But if I am not mistake, Pearl reported this to the NCAA himself even after the fact.

I love Tress and the Bucks but he screwed up and now must take responsibility and the punishment.

I don't know if JT's issues and Bruce Pearl's issues track as well as most of the mediots are saying though (not meaning you or anyone here, but I do mean the idiots that write crap for "publications").....

The details of the two situations are almost entirely different. EDIT: It's also important to note that Pearl's issues were systemic within his system of coaching and also his assistant coaches. Tressel's issues are not nearly as deep at least within his coaching staff.

I think it's also important to note that you won't see any former players ever calling Jim Tressel "a snake". For another, you won't see JT ever trying to set up another school by calling a former recruit and baiting him into answers that would damage him or the other school.

As another - while he wasn't quite as forthright with the emails and by that I mean he didn't immediately produce them, it all depends on what you think his intentions where concerning this incident. Until I get any indications otherwise, I still think he was trying (albeit out of his lane) to control this situation "in-house" and I do think he was worried to a certain level about the well-being of his athletes.

No, comparing Pearl to Jim Tressel doesn't really jive with me. Both have had their issues, but they are both coming at compliance from different perspectives. Pearl really appears to be the guy that is sorry he gets caught.

Meh....not buying the "Scared" theory...

Respectfully, I don't think he DIDN'T know what to do....he knew what needed to be done...he just didn't pull the trigger when he knew he should have.

The unfortunate thing is, only him and a couple of people know what really has happened. And this is the one thing that happens when a coach is accused of unethical conduct....it shoots credibility in the foot.

The one thing to remember, however, is that in the past, he's been pretty tough (or swift) on players that break these kinds of rules. I'd agree in saying that he made a very bad judgement call in not reporting it. But if he had, he'd have run the risk of getting run out of town anyway (baseing that on a previous post in this very thread that called Tressel "arrogant").

When you don't come to light, then you have people in the university saying "this didn't happen" and then it does, that is damaging to a coach's character in the public eye.

But one other thing to concider....tOSU isn't UT!

The athletic director (Mike Hamilton) down in Tennessee has had a shaky reign as Athletic director:

"Pearl's revelations also add one more blemish on Hamilton's seven-year run as the leader of the Volunteers men's athletic program. Most of the problems have come since his hire of Kiffin, who lasted one season before leaving for Southern California.

The NCAA has interviewed several current and former Tennessee football assistant coaches and recruits about possible violations during the 2009 season. Tennessee self-reported six minor recruiting violations by Kiffin and his staff and in December acknowledged cooperating with an NCAA investigation into actions by the school's Orange Pride athletics hostess program.

The Vols have also seen a string of arrests in both programs.

A trio of football players were arrested in November on attempted armed robbery charges. And in January, four basketball players were arrested on gun and drug charges, which prompted Hamilton to declare he had no more tolerance for wrongdoing.

Two more football players were arrested in July following a massive bar brawl that left an off-duty police officer with a serious head injury."

That alone would (and could still) get Pearl fired. But here's the one thing that is killer:

"Recall that Tennessee terminated Bruce Pearl's contract last fall and that Pearl is currently coaching with no security. If the Vols cut Pearl tomorrow they'd owe him nothing. He's an at-will employee. Committing a major violation leaves a coach hanging by a thread, the school can cut him loose at no extra coast."

He's basically coaching with no guarantee that he's going to be the coach. Not to mention it's not the first time he's been involved in some shadiness with players, either.

I think that the tOSU will get hammered pretty decently, though. The NCAA has made it clear they're out for blood with this kind of stuff now. And if they don't hammer tOSU, the whiners at USC and scUM (I think that's what you guys call em) will be picketing the NCAA offices in Indianapolis.

I stand with Jim Tressel.

I'm not a tin foil conspiracy theorist but if you don't think the timing of this is the least bit suspicious then you need your head examined. This all started a couple weeks before the Sugar Bowl. Then it all died down. Now it all starts up all over again right before the NCAA basketball tourney with us at #1.

Did Jim withhold information? Sure. What are we talking about though? Rings off the players' fingers, shirts off their backs and cleats off their feet. The NCAA can sell cheap, knock off, faux, Chinese made "2" jersey's for $99 (purchased for maybe $.50 cents each.) Millions and millions of them.

However, the guys that EARNED this gear are forbidden from selling or exchanging it for anything. Let me say that again for emphasis. These young men cannot sell the clothes they have EARNED. I find that so far beyond hypocritical that I'm at a complete and utter loss for words.

If my son ever plays football and he's coached by any man half (just half) as good a man as Jim Tressel I would be thrilled.

I'm utterly disgusted by this entire kangaroo court. I know and fully comprehend what Jim did was wrong but my God this whole charade is insane when you stop and think about it. Absolutely insane and maddening.

Here's the simply reason why I love Tressel.

While other coaches **cough** Lane Kiffin **cough** treat football prospects like MLB free agents, trying to sway them before signing day on the sole merit of football, JT cares about the individual and wants them to make the best decision for them athletically AND ACADEMICALLY.

Not to quote myself, but... ok, yeah, to quote myself... just thought this belonged more in this thread...
Part of the reason I can't get too mad at Tress (ok, I'm really not mad at all) is that I just do not believe in the rule. Along those lines, I'm with Wilbon and Fiutak (among others out there):

What I think is missing here from the analysis of the emails and the rules and the press conference and all the shit that's gone down is that there should be real concern from Tress, the Team and the other players that certain members of the team may have been putting themselves in situations that were actually bad, not just in violation of hypocritical NCAA rules. By the sound of things, any 18-22 year old college kids would have been smart to avoid that character Eddie Rife in general, nevermind what it means in terms of the NCAA...
JT is our coach enough said. I stand by him every second, with no doubts. We all make mistakes.

It's the past, let's look toward the future, because that future is oh so bright here at THE Ohio State University.

O - H!!!!

Bruce Hooley

Hooley is very bitter and have so much hatred in his heart toward Coach Tressel that the entire show reveals his ugliness. He kept asking for callers, but what he really wanted was callers to support his hatred. Anyone that called in to support JT, Hooley would raise his voice and argue immediately.

I have more information I wish I could share to show how ignorant hooley is, but I rather not...but one thing I know - I would be proud to have JT as my coach and my son's coach over any one in this country!

:oh:

Has it ever been discovered or discussed what problem Bruce Hooley (of Buckeye Blitz and 97.1 the Fan) has with coach Tressel? There is definitely a problem.

I may be omitting the fact that some people are just miserable in life.

Seems to go out of the way to disparage Tressel.

I'm shocked over the national coverage. They're treating Tressel like that scumbag Lane Kiffin. Tress is one of the best coaches and highest character guys in the country. We all stand with him. Period

Certainly OK to stand up for osu family. BUT, he lied to the NCAA. I don't think they are going to take that very lightly. I can see more sanctions coming down for osu and Tressell.

I stand with Jim Tressel.

I stand with the man who has shown full and honest love for each of his players, his university and, to a certain extent, the community that is Buckeye fan-dom at large.

The man has restored the program to a place of honor both on the football field and within the classroom. When someone - anyone - makes a mistake, Tressel is about honest and integrity in dealing with the situation. If a mistake is made he will be the first to man up and take the punishment.

In an increasingly divisive and judgmental world, this man has stood for what is RIGHT in this world over what is expected. He has, all by himself, attempted to positively affect the lives of every person he has come into contact with and he will continue to do as the Head Football Coach of THE Ohio State University.

I stand with the man who worries about his players as a first thought. Consequences be damned, in this situation, he was more worried about his troops. We as a fanbase are EXTREMELY blessed to have this man coaching, teaching and reaching out to the community within our world. We should be wishing there were more like him.

I don't know why I started a different thread for this, I'm sure it'll be merged. I just thought I'd get my .02 in.

September 3rd cannot get here soon enough.
