May should be a good month.

I'm pretty interested to hear Kele Okereke's solo album (June 21st). First single is...not what I expected -

There are quite a few indie songs on TV commercials, TV shows, during sporting events, etc. I figured I might as well try to keep track of a few as I notice them. Feel free to add any that you hear, because the odds are there are lots of good bands/songs that I'm missing out on. (Also, there are plenty of times I hear a song I like on a commercial and wonder what it is, so it would be nice to have a mini-database here on BP.)

Off the top of my head:

Commercials:
The Big Pink - Dominos (Jaguar)
Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition (car?)
Band of Horses - The Funeral (Ford?)
Phoenix - 1901 (Cadillac)
The Heavy - How You Like Me Now (Kia Super Bowl)
Donovan - Catch the Wind (GE?)
Fiest - 1234 (ipod)

TV:
The Black Keys - Lies ('Lie To Me' promo)
Dan Auerbach - Keep It Hid (during 'Friday Night Lights')
Passion Pit - Sleepyhead (during NCAA Tournament)

Video Games:
The Black Keys - Strange Times (GTA IV)

Plenty of others that I can't think of now, I'll edit the list as I hear them.

It's interesting you bring that up. I could probably think of dozens more to add to that list, but I don't want to.

The reason - I try to get out ahead of some of those songs being licensed. I don't think I'd be able to appreciate a song in the same way if I knew it primarily from the ad.

To wit: I was never much of a Led Zeppelin fan until a couple years ago. It's a long story, but basically they're not of my generation and my upbringing didn't expose me to much of that type of music so it was something that took me some time to get to. Now that I've come around to them, I find myself still unable to listen to their song "Rock and Roll". It makes me think of Cadillacs, which make me think of old people. I want no part of that.

I think we're on the same page. I guess I was trying to point out a few I have heard that I still wouldn't consider to be 'mainstream,' while you make the obvious and valid point that they are becoming more mainstream once they are part of TV commercials. With that being said, I don't lose my appreciation for a particular band/song just because I hear it on a commercial. A Billboard Top 40/Pop music listener isn't going to give a shit one way or another if the song is on a commercial, because these songs aren't usually something they would recognize. They most likely haven't heard it before, and they won't notice it when they hear it the next time.

And while I understand your point about the Zeppelin song, I consider them to be the polar opposite of indie music. Most people know their identifiable sound by now simply because they are being played everywhere you turn. I'm 26, didn't start listening to them until college, and I can pick out a song by them instantly (as I type this, the Indians just changed pitchers and they started playing 'Immigrant Song'.) On the other hand, most people aren't going to hear a random song on a commercial and say "Hey, that's 'The Black Keys' ." And those who do will think it's kind of cool. I guess what I'm trying to say is at this level, when the only time the general public hears a band is during a 30 second car commercial, I'm just happy that the band is starting to get recognized. Do I want their songs to get beaten into the ground and sang by every soccer mom and their kids on the way to school? Of course not. But I like the idea that people are starting to hear about them.

Disclaimer: I couldn't care less what is considered mainstream, except for the fact that usually when something hits that level, it is so overplayed that you start to resent the fact that you ever liked the song in the first place.
