Pitchfork: Robert Pollard Scores Pete Rose Documentary

At his heart, Robert Pollard is just a good ole boy from East Dayton-prime Reds country.

I wanted to go to the GBV show at Southgate House in October, but I got caught up at work when they went on sale, and they were sold out in a matter of minutes. I might try to scalp some tickets.

I've only been to two GBV shows and one of them was an appearance at X-Fest in 1999 in support of Do The Collapse, which means that one doesn't even really count.

If Indie bands were good, they'd be mainstream.

Pitchfork: Arcade Fire Hit Number One

Arcade Fire Hit Number One

The Suburbs topples Eminem for Billboard supremacy.
TheSuburbs_Artwork_cover1.jpg

They did it, folks-- more people bought Arcade Fire's third album, The Suburbs, than any other album in the United States last week. The news comes courtesy of their label, Merge, and label mates Spoon, who Tweeted, "Let the record reflect that Merge Records is the NUMBER ONE LABEL IN THE USA! Here's to Arcade Fire and Merge: #1 -- 156k copies sold." This comes after news of the group triumphing over the UK album charts this week as well, according to Billboard.
This is the band's first chart-topping album in the U.S. Their last LP, Neon Bible, debuted at number two. Independent rock music is pretty popular now, apparently!

This morning began with a conversation with a coworker. I've done my best to paraphrase below:

CoWorker: Oh man, can't wait till lunch! I'm running out and grabbing the new Vampire Weekend album
BigWoof: Who are they?

CW: Seriously!? You don't know?
BW: no. Should I?

CW: Ohmygod they are amazing. They're sound is awesome and they could be a once in a generation band!
BW: Oh, what radio station would I find their songs?

CW: Well - they're not really on the radio.
BW: Oh. Then who are they like?

I couldn't name more than 3 Vampire Weekend songs and wouldn't ever buy a cd, buuuuut I heard this one a couple weeks ago and had to do my damned to convince my sister it wasn't Paul Simon. It almost sounds like it could be right off the Graceland album. Being confused with Paul Simon is pretty decent praise

Their music is pretty damn catchy.

The Decemberists new album about to come out. I the first single is perhaps the best R.E.M. song in almost two decades - and I mean that in the best way possible. It figures since Peter Buck contributed to this album.

Also, The Strokes have announced a release date for their next album. Hopefully it doesn't suck like the last one. A recent YouTube video of Casablancas and Rivers Cuomo together in the studio isn't promising though.

OK, so I thought The Decemberists' Down by the Water cribbed R.E.M.... That's nothing compared to Calamity Song, which sounds like it came straight off of Murmur or Reckoning. It was kind fun to hear because nobody, including R.E.M, is making songs that sound quite like that anymore. It was a little off-putting though to hear that Peter Buck guitar phrase, and then the vocals come in and it's not Michael Stipe and you can actually discern the lyrics. Thankfully, the rest of the album sees them exploring other corners of alt-country and American folk rock. I'm a sucker for those kind of sounds, and for me it's a welcome change from the last album.

I'm also digging the new one by Smith Westerns so far. I didn't care too much for their first album but the first single off the new one, Weekend, is a definite earworm.

I like indie/alternative. The only thing I dont like about some alt bands is the fact more and more are turning pop. Why are Boys Like Girls and We the Kings doing songs with Disney artists? I like how indie bands stay under the radar enough that their music stays edgy. I love pandora on my iphone. I could listen to it all day. If anybody know of some good indie/alt bands pm me or something. I'm always looking for new music

I agree that VW sounds similar to Graceland. The difference is Paul Simon A-did it much better B-did it first C-did it with real African musicians-Ladysmith Black Mambazo from South Africa, and D-doesn't act all gay and cutesy w/ his instruments on stage.
