Tressel has helped Mo C too. It has nothing to do with that. It has to do with a reporter saying, "My magazine, station, etc. will pay you x thousand to tell us that Tressel looked the other way at your indiscretions." When that happens, game over.

I dont think thats exactly how it works.....first it needs to have happened then the player needs to be willing to testify to the NCAA that it happened and it needs to be clear and with in the statute of limitations. Not just go on TV and give a vague story. While true journalism is a lost art what you described is offering money to make up a story because it will sell. unlikely imo

1) Just like it was over for Auburn when Stanley McLover went on Real Sports?

The Ohio State University has always represented "the good guys" to me. I grew up believing that people there did the right things and did things right.

I cannot tell you how deeply disappointed I am in Coach Tressel and these players. I hear the argument Coach Tressel makes about an investigation in progress, but I have a hard time believing that he could not take action immediately against the players, whilst not revealing the cause of the infraction. He made choices and now he and the relevant players must pay.

Despite my disappointment, I also see Coach Tressel for the dramatic improvement, on- and off-the-field during his tenure. Until this embarrassing episode, I believe that he kept his promise about how Ohio State fans would feel about his teams, made so long ago now on that hardwood floor at a very dark time in Ohio State football history.

Coach Tressel, by almost any measure you wish to make, is proven to develop his players better than just about any coach in America. Not only for the NFL, but in the classroom and for life. The transformation of some of these kids has been almost unbelievable.

No program the size of Ohio State runs without student problems. No one can guarantee how a high school kid will turn out. But one can expect a coach to live up to the rules and standards he espouses. Still, those baying for his resignation should recall how many called for Woody's resignation and then found out how much they had lost when they got their wish.

For these reasons, I may not be all in, but I am also not all out. Coach Tressel and the players involved should suffer a penalty in line with that suffered by other players. Nothing more. Nothing less.

And when they have served that penalty, it will be time to move on. I hope that we will see Coach Tressel on the sidelines for many years to come.

I can identify with all of your feelings. If Ohio State can take its medicine and keep Tressel, that's probably the outcome most of us will want. I just think every single, little issue that comes up will be interpreted in the worst light and hung around Tressel's neck, and the bottom of the barrel will show up to make it impossible for JT and OSU to go forward in a positive way. Maybe the sludge will stay quiet and this will just end up being a little bump in the road. But I know reporters, and they have orgasms when they see someone like "Saint Tressel" become vulnerable. They are digging right now as we speak. Let's hope they don't come up with anything that's printable - but these days, the bar for that is pretty low.

Tress believes in redemption or at least in giving people the opportunity for it. See the lengths to which he went to help MoC post-drama. I do not think many other coaches would've done that. I believe that Tress is more than due the same opportunity. His offense was not simply a crass grab for wins. There was, although we can certainly disagree about the scope/extent of it, more to this whole situation. Yes, he sailed a little (or lot) too close to the wind, but he did so, at least in part, for the right reasons. I'm still all in.

http://www.sportsbybrooks.com/the-tressel-die-is-cast-but-what-o-the-program-29656

Article noted not for the obvious Buckeye bashing, but for the author's assertion that tOSU's failure to fully identify the merchandise, value, and all participants (i.e., "investigate and disclose") in its March letter to the NCAA could result in new charges not contemplated or alleged in the recent NOA.

(yes, Bill, I have previously mentioned the "new investigation", but I did not consider the ramifications of incorrect or non-full disclosure to the NCAA in Gee's March letter....which would indeed explain the NOA's request for the original "tip off" letter send to tOSU by Justice in December. They would want to compare that information with the information disclosed by tOSU in its March letter)

is the assumption that OSU tried to hide some of the merchandise? if that's the case, I'm done with the whole damn administration.

you cheat...whatever. every school is cheating. I hear stories from buddies who played D2 ball that got $$$, so to think it isn't happening at a powerhouse is naive. but you cheat, get caught, try to cover, get caught at that, then lie about the amount, and get caught at that?

my dad usually gets his alumni tickets every year and I or my brother will buy them off him if he doesn't want them. he sent an email this morning asking if either of us would want them knowing they're probably going to be for one of the first 5 games. for the first time in my life, I had to think about it. that fucking sucks.

I don't follow the logic of expecting additional issues/problems/another NOA for OSU as everything being mentioned was included in the NOA.

In fact the 'extra' player being referenced was cited directly from the NCAA's NOA - and that is how the media learned about it. So if the 'new' player is in the current NOA..why should it be assumed he is not part of the NCAA' investigation and another NOA may be in the works?

Player G didn't break AFTER the NOA, he was part of the NOA. I don't see why the NCAA would name the details in the NOA, but not consider him as part of the current situation.

My suspicion:

1) player G was already graduated by the time this hit the fan, so he was not part of all the original discussion. I don't get the impression he was discovered and added by the NCAA, but was rather part of the entire disclosure from OSU that was never made public.

2) If the NCAA had found additional players and problems beyond what OSU reported it would have been a MASSIVE blow and certainly Gene Smith would have [Mark May] a brick and likely fired JT already. Instead, he assured the player's parents that the NOA was *good* news for OSU, in that it was in line with OSU's findings and statements.

3) By the time the news broke of the 'Tat 5' the unnamed, extra player was no longer with the program, and therefore was not part of the possible sugar bowl suspension and related review, which was the thrust of the original story. In effect this is 'more of the same' as long as OSU didn't hide the details and the NCAA dug them out.

4) Sports by brooks is a horrible source..actually that is not my suspicion, but rather fact. They are a conspiracy site more than a credible news source.

I have a hard time buying that they were further trying to hide things as it would seem that the prior decisions were so incredibly poor that surely they must have known better than to make matters worse. So, I won't believe that until there some real evidence of that. But if that were to be true, I'm with you. Rather than just being not all in, I'll be all out.

Christian Science Monitor, it is not. I was not vouching or approving their theory, just passing it on. Dirty or not, they get a bunch of hits. I followed their Cam Newton theories reporting when it was hot and heavy about the revelations of Cam's dad.

I was never able to find, despite some genuine searching, a pdf of the December 19 self report that led to the bowl reinstatement. If I could read it a lot of stuff would be cleared up. Hell, Gee or Smith may have disclosed the Justice Dept letter then, and this is all much of nothing.

Anyone laid eyes on that actual first self report and able to link it?
