The Ohio State University has always represented "the good guys" to me. I grew up believing that people there did the right things and did things right.
I cannot tell you how deeply disappointed I am in Coach Tressel and these players. I hear the argument Coach Tressel makes about an investigation in progress, but I have a hard time believing that he could not take action immediately against the players, whilst not revealing the cause of the infraction. He made choices and now he and the relevant players must pay.
Despite my disappointment, I also see Coach Tressel for the dramatic improvement, on- and off-the-field during his tenure. Until this embarrassing episode, I believe that he kept his promise about how Ohio State fans would feel about his teams, made so long ago now on that hardwood floor at a very dark time in Ohio State football history.
Coach Tressel, by almost any measure you wish to make, is proven to develop his players better than just about any coach in America. Not only for the NFL, but in the classroom and for life. The transformation of some of these kids has been almost unbelievable.
No program the size of Ohio State runs without student problems. No one can guarantee how a high school kid will turn out. But one can expect a coach to live up to the rules and standards he espouses. Still, those baying for his resignation should recall how many called for Woody's resignation and then found out how much they had lost when they got their wish.
For these reasons, I may not be all in, but I am also not all out. Coach Tressel and the players involved should suffer a penalty in line with that suffered by other players. Nothing more. Nothing less.
And when they have served that penalty, it will be time to move on. I hope that we will see Coach Tressel on the sidelines for many years to come.
