Extreme view #2: Tressel kept quiet to preserve a possible 2010 national championship.

I don't think that's an extreme view. I think that's the middle of the road view actually. And the most likely one at this point.

The extreme view, the one that's being repeated all over the non-Buckeye internet, is that Tressel is a Machivellian, master-manipulator with a carefully cultivated reputation that in no way resembles his actual character - which is clearly insane, but that's the nature of things today.

I'm not even sure if this is worth posting because it has all the verifiability of a conversation with the UPS guy, but this whole ordeal reminded me of a story relayed to me during the whole Mo C episode. The "source" was someone in the OSU athletic dept at the time, a field hockey assistant or something. Anyways, my buddy had chatted with this guy who essentially said the the situation had been on a slow boil for months. There had been multiple meetings concerning what to do about the fact that Mo was not being very discreet about hitting up pretty much every business in town to get whatever he could. My takeaway (and this was a 2nd or 3rd hand story from nearly a decade ago) was that the focus of the meetings was about how to get him to knock it off, not about reporting violations.

The only reason I even mention this, is that it wouldn't surprise me in the least if these sort of things go on regularly. Tress or staff gets wind of it and tells the guys to knock it off before the eff everything up for everybody. Not saying it is right or wrong, just maybe more common than most of us are aware. For example, I've eaten at the Buckeye HOF Cafe maybe a half dozen times in my life. On two occasions in '03 an '05 current players were eating at a table next to mine (once FB and once BB). Now I know it is not a 4 star joint, but when I was a student Fazoli's was an expensive night out. On both occasions the players were dining with an old white dude. I'm not suggesting anything improper occurred. I didn't see who paid or anything that would suggest... well, anything. But I can see how easy it would have been that the old white dudes were alums treating the guys to a nice meal. Again, I saw nothing that would demonstrate what I saw was improper.

I wish I could say I was shocked or surprised by this episode, but I'm not. My guess is that penny ante violations go on all the time and JT and the staff do there best to keep the guys in line. Maybe I'm jaded but I'd be willing to bet that this wasn't the first time this sort of thing has happened, they just got caught on this one. I also don't think this is any different at any other major program. Just part of the deal. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I'll continue to watch and enjoy OSU football more than any other sport (save maybe Reds baseball) whether JT continues to be the coach or not. I lived through "Hot Tub" John, I can live with this.

That kind of goes back to my observation from the first night. I guarantee you that a few coaches throughout the nation went through their inboxes the night of or the next morning after the press conference with Tressel.

Go ahead, keep comparing this place to Auburn when that is absolutely not the case :roll1:
Not this place - this is the I am Not All In thread.

Look Mike, I only say that when your University admits in a letter to the NCAA that Tress never told them (hence the admitted major violation), and you have folks run around saying, "I'm sure he must have told people..."

We can talk all day about why he never told people. Did not think it important. Forgot. Was going to, and then forgot. Was about to, and tOSU's e-mail search found it first. Intentionally covered it up. Those are all possible "why" he did that. But I am as annoyed as Kyle is by me in reading all of the "I refuse to believe that he did not report" posts. THAT is the Auburnesque [Mark May] I was referring to. "How could you think Cam's dad asked us for money?" Uh - because he asked Mississippi State? At some point we can argue motivation and intent (or not), but we have to - at some point - quit making up facts that are different just to justify wishful thinking.

Jesus, is it their opinion that the press conference and the letter to the NCAA saying what it says are all lies themselves??? That Tress lied in his apology, and Gee and Smith lies about what happened, and the letter to the NCAA saying that Tress only fessed up after he was caught is a lie??? tOSU is lying to the NCAA multiple times because it wants to get its nuts crushed for lying to the NCAA, all to protect the Image of the Immaculate Coach? C'mon. I think he is still a top 5 coach. I still think you should keep him.

No matter what the outcome of this whole episode is there is now a gaping wound that is the football program. All future wins and championships, as well as, all previous wins an championships under Tress's leadership will be questioned. Did they cheat, did they use ineligible players, etc., etc.,etc.....

if Tress stays this will be a constant mantra in the press, on ESPiN, with other fans from other teams. It isn't going away anytime soon...

Meh, we'll get over it. Almost all major programs have been investigated and had cause to question the ethics of the program; this wasn't the first time for Ohio State, it won't be the last. I'm real good at putting my head in the sand.

What I meant by "extreme view" for me were the two poles that are in my personal believable scale. I don't see Tressel as Machiavellian so I'll toss that extreme out. I'm sure there were shades to the truth that he didn't really want to report it because of competitiveness for 2010, and for the questionable legalities.

Honestly, if you sit on that e-mail for a day, its probably an NCAA violation. So for someone like Tressel, who comes across as thoughtful enough to put his blinker on 200ft before a turn, if he was thinking on what to do for a little while in what amounts as a difficult decision either way, I can see any delay almost becoming the decision. But I'll enjoy the many theories either way.

This is where each individual person has to ask themselves which of the two poles requires the fewest assumptions.

1) The MIB's asking Tressel to keep it quiet theory

or

2) A football coach doing what he thought he could get away with to keep his star QB and WR eligible over what was, to be fair, a petty offense.

Not directed at you SD but choosing #2 doesn't mean you don't support (as a man), like, admire or want to see Jim Tressel remain at OSU if possible. It just means you don't buy #1.

I told you! I'm good at putting my head in the sand! Truth be told, its spring break at the school, so none of the professors or graduate students have been in town out on the property.

But, in our lab of 10 members (1 prof, 2 biological scientists, 2 field technicians and 5 PhD or MS students) we have 5 Ohio State Buckeye fans. Solidarity.
