That's what we get for being in the 70s and lower 80s for much of July and August.

The weather pattern is still way off for this time of year although it's not entirely unprecedented, usually you don't get dominant high pressure areas over the east coast (at least at the strength we are seeing it) during fall. What is really surprising is the lack of severe weather and how calm (other than the Hurricane strikes) the weather has been overall the past couple weeks.

Much as I personally hate it, we do have episodes of ridiculously inappropriate temps in Ohio in the autumn. A few years ago, I was auditing an art class at tOSU. Not so pleasant memory of that experience was a day early in October when I was lugging my painting supplies across campus in a balmy 93F.
