Well, prior to Harvey we hadn't had a real biggie for a while. We were kinda past due.

Unfortunately, a lot of people have moved south who have no experience with hurricanes, and a lot of the people who have had experience have forgotten a lot about dealing with them.

And we're only at the peak of hurricane season right now.

Wonderful. Irma looks to be headed straight for Florida baring some front/wave strong enough to push it away from the coast and north or south. Current track would have it coming on in the north Miami area and straight over Okechobee.

Fuck this stupid bitch.

last i saw it was still projecting to turn northward.

Atlantic coast of Florida will take a beating, but i don't think she's gonna pull an Andrew and blow through and into the Gulf.

Looking out the window and Portland is socked in. Little flakes are falling. It's beginning to look a lot like Chr....Except it is 98 freakin' degrees. In the midst of one of the hottest and driest recorded summers some stupid 14 year old thinks letting off fireworks is a good idea. Within a couple hours a 150 hikers are trapped in the Gorge. What was supposed to be a casual 2 mile hike to a couple popular swimming holes turned into an overnighter and a 14 mile hike out (which must really suck in flip flops). Now I-84 is closed and the smoke and ash is funneling into Portland. Actually kind of feel bad for the kid. I don't imagine the residents of Cascade Locks who are being evacuated do.

Looks like the last model runs generally have it running right up through the state, putting the eye coming close to right through Orlando, maybe just to the east closer to the coast than Orlando, so looks like I'm in for a fun time if those average tracks hold. Talk about a fun "Welcome to Florida" for my mom, who just moved in with us last month.

Seriously though, if work says don't bother coming in this weekend I'm considering using vacation hours and suggesting a few days in Atlanta or somewhere north of the panhandle for the 3 of us if the models keep close to their current track.

Given that it's a Cat 5 this morning, yeah, take a trip, and don't wait until the last minute when everybody else is on the road.

Evacuation checklist: How to get your family out safely in the face of an imminent disaster

Most of these suggestions are useful, tho' I don't personally think much of people who leave their pets behind. While you're at it, if you have a really big family, consider only taking your favorite child.

Just hold the thought that Irma doesn't pass over Florida and head into the Gulf. A hit on Texas would be truly catastrophic.
Chances are slim but yes ... that is a nightmare scenario.. also keep a look out Bay of Campeche + another potential hurricane lower in latitude than Irma following close on her footsteps

Granted, not the catastrophe of a hurricane, but...

Day after day after day, highs in the upper 80's to low 90's, with heat indices in the triple digits. It was never this hot for this long in July or August.

Not forecast to cool down until the end of this week. Just hate it when autumn weather is this hot. Summer's over, dammit. Act like it.

I got a sunburn watching my daughter play at Firestone this weekend.

I was at a baseball game today and the heat index was 102

nuts

That's what we get for being in the 70s and lower 80s for much of July and August.

The weather pattern is still way off for this time of year although it's not entirely unprecedented, usually you don't get dominant high pressure areas over the east coast (at least at the strength we are seeing it) during fall. What is really surprising is the lack of severe weather and how calm (other than the Hurricane strikes) the weather has been overall the past couple weeks.
