How does work make you feel today?

@buckeyebri
My experience... sit down with the clients and ask questions... but be prepared to deal with the responses... cuz you might not like some of them
Ask them what would the perfect partner be like.. systems, deliverables, products, fill rates, billing errors, whatever, things that can be quantified
What things about us/me would you like changed
Document the responses...
have the client validate the list..
jointly prioritize it (you might want to stack the deck here and pop up things you feel best able to achieve)
Segregate the list of things into those you can control vs not.. hand the not's off to folks who can (and try to keep tabs altho this is tuff)
develop a project plan
break down each item.. into tactical steps with key benchmark dates....
update the project plan accordingly
Do periodic reviews with the clients to ensure they agree with the items/priority/progress
When they know you give a shit and willing to make the relationship 'perfect'
before you know it.. you'll be the man

Gained me the Chairman's Award at a Fortune 100 firm...

Thanks @NJ-Buckeye. This is good stuff. I have been a SR. Account Manager/Consultant for sometime now, but different companies define it different ways. Your approach is right up my alley and very relationship oriented. The firm I am with now, the role is much more sales oriented and while the technology is the same I am in a different industry. That in itself is okay, but I don't have the relationships I need with the accounts and I am not getting the introductions I am looking for from the VP and other staff. My clients are all over the U.S., so I am doing a lot of cold phone calling and emailing trying to connect and introduce myself. I have been at it about 5 months and I am getting a bit frustrated with where I am in getting responses and driving business. I have some good opportunities in line, but I would love to have more face time with my clients to better build the relationships.

That is an interesting concept and one I had not considered. I was at a trade show two weeks ago and met with a number of folks and I am also very active in trying to connect with folks via LinkedIn. I get antsy when I don't get responses from folks. I really work to bring a value proposition to the client.

If you approach it like it's a networking call... it's not asking for the order or a job, per se
The way Lucht teaches.. you're asking for their opinions and advice because 'they obviously have been very successful in their careers'

You could even take the approach that you're doing due diligence on Company X as a potential company you might want to work for (or not)..
and what can this person tell you about the company... the types of people in mgmt.. the company culture, etc...
or does he have someone he could recommend that can tell you about the company
and Company X could be their own company or a competitor

You haven't put them on defense by asking for an order or a job... you're asking for a valued opinion
folks loved to be stroked and that someone thinks their opinion has value

Coming off a four-day weekend, have to be there by 6:15 for a meeting tomorrow. With snow forecast, that means a 5AM departure, at the latest.

And I just know there'll be a line of people waiting to piss me off after the meeting.

So I had my interview for a planning/scheduling position for a manufacturing company today and have another interview with the Tennessee Department of Revenue tomorrow. Time to get back in the game after a few months "off". Can't fucking wait. Seriously I have been a jailer, Cop/Narc, Farmer, cost accountant/tax professional, Industrial coordinator, and investor/trader on the market as a side job/hobby. Find somebody with a resume as fucked up as mine.

Also, does anybody invest here on BP? I haven't seen a thread and I'm always looking for fellow investors to swap ideas and talk about growth stocks, mutual funds/etfs, S&P 500, etc.

The last thing! I'm thinking about going back to school to be a park ranger. Focusing on a geology or forestry major. I really believe that is my true calling. Office work just isn't for me. It's good money but it doesn't make me happy. With job/office suckage and Michigan football suckage at the moment.........well let's just say I can't have that much suckage in my life.

I dabble a bit in the markets, however much of my portfolio is buy and hold. I work as a trader for a HFT firm, so I am limited in the type of trading I can do, as I have to hold everything for a minimum of 21 days and am limited in what I can actually trade. If I do happen to want to make a "short-term" trade, it is always with options.

I'm back to applying for pretty much anything at all interesting to me, including outside the company. I applied and interviewed for a part time leadership spot at the new Merlin attractions complex on I-Drive at the beginning of the month, they said we should hear back yes or no by the following Friday. My wife and I run into some friends at a park the next Tuesday night, both of which applied for full time spots and had already heard back and got jobs, they said it sounded like they would be calling back the part time folks in the next few days. I never heard a peep, or got an e-mail. Great, I didn't get it. I'm a little ticked they couldn't bother to respond with a no, but whatever, no big deal really.

Well, I just got a call a few minutes ago, from Merlin. She just flatly offered a regular part time host spot at $1.30 less than I currently make, didn't even acknowledge it wasn't what I applied and interviewed for. Of course I turned it down, but I was also just a little insulted by the lack of acknowledgement that it isn't what I applied, much less interviewed for, but they still would like to have me on the team. Also, when you decided I wasn't being offered a leadership spot, you couldn't have let me know that and that you were still considering me for a basic spot? I still would have politely declined, but this experience just moved Merlin down to the "desperation applications" portion of my jobs list.

Sorry, had to get that vented somewhere away from the industry folks I talk to. Now to await the fifth time I get unceremoniously dumped from the application pool for entertainment tech at Disney...
