Well lets start with the royalty, which just so happens to be the first 4. He was not in Archie, Eddie, Kieth or MoC territory imo.

After those 4 I would probably put Beanie and Robert Smith

Then I'd go with any argument thereafter so I'd vote 7th or so.

Its very difficult to compare talent and promise vs actual results, which is the case of Carlos Hyde. Hr missed too many games this year - his highlight year- to fairly put him above guys like Byars, Beanie, or Clarett. I think Hyde is all heart and will make am NFL team happy but he took the ball out of his own hands this year with his suspension and will pay the price in terms of his legacy.

Had he not missed 5 games (including limited duty in the FAMU Game this year, UCF and MSU games in 2012) over the past two years, I think he would have given the 4,000 yard mark a serious run.

Hyde played in 11 games this year and rushed for 1,521 yards, the 7th best season in Buckeye history. If he plays in the other three games and meets his per game average of 138.3 yards, then ends up with 1,936 yards, which would be the best in Ohio State history (Eddie George has the record, with 1,927 yards in 13 games in 1995).

But if we want to play the "what if" game, imagine someone like Robert Smith running in this offensive scheme behind one of the best offensive lines in Buckeye history....

1. Archie Griffin: 5,589 yards, 6.0 ypc, 121.5 ypg, 26 TD; AA in 1973-74-75; Heisman in 1974-75 - STILL the only back-to-back Heisman winner.
2. Keith Byars: 3,200 yards, 5.2 ypc, 86.5 ypg, 46 TD; AA in 1984
3. Eddie George: 3,768 yards, 5.5 ypc, 78.5 ypg, 44 TD; AA in 1995, Heisman in 1995
4. Carlos Hyde: 3,202 yards, 6.1 ypc, 78.1 ypg, 37 TD - What this guy could have done if they coaches used him more in the previous two seasons. IMO the most under utilized RB in OSU history
5. Beanie Wells: 3,382 yards, 5.8 ypc, 93.9 ypg, 30 TD - Another under utilized RB, if JT would have used him in tandem with Pittman in the 06-07, OSU would have had been more prepared throughout the season.
6. Antonio Pittman: 2,945 yards, 5.3 ypc, 84.1 ypg, 22 TD
8. Robert Smith: 1,945 yards, 6.0 ypc, 88.4 ypg, 18 TD

This is very close to my own ranking, with George/Byars flipped behind Archie, and Pittman probably down a few notches for me. MoC and Smith should be higher but get bumped down for too-short OSU careers.

Hence why I'm NOT playing the what if game and am grading Hyde out on his performance. We could play the what if game about beanie and if he had stayed healthy, I choose not to. Hyde had a fine season but Im not even considering him top five. I have him at eighth. Just like despite Phillys career numbers, I wouldn't put him top eight all time as a buckeye reciever.

3rd. Pretty tough to surpass Eddie and Archie without having a full 3-4 year crack at it. Hyde at his peak (this season) was just as good as anyone on this list. I nearly put Beanie at #3 and I don't think he had as good of a line to run behind as Hyde, but I still think Hyde the last two seasons is slightly ahead. Of course MoC was maybe the most talented period but one year is not enough for me to put him ahead of Hyde.

I put Hyde in the same category as Wells. Both missed considerable playing time due to injury or suspension which decreased the amount of total yards they could have had at the end of their career. I do put Well slightly above Hyde though because he played behind in my mind a weaker O-line and was able to rack up those kind of numbers.

Going from what you said in the LB thread about being too young to have seen some of these guys let me say with the utmost confidence that if you put Kieth Byars in Urban's offense this year he would have run for about a billion yards. Maybe more.
