Holbrook to Retire (Merged)

Let's see how much damage she can do down there. Lantern link.

Seriously, what damage did she do? Yes, she handled the tailgating thing rather clumsily. Even then, she was right that a problem exisites. Her response was just directed at the wrong people. OTOH:

Ohio State has never been ranked higher nor its reputation higher across the country.

The quality of the student body has never been higher. On the Fredo board, they're crying about kids with 3.7 gpa's having to settle on Miami as a safety school after being rejected by Ohio State.

Ohio State attracted 650 million dollars in external research funding to the state last year (almost as much as every other university public and private in the state combined). Using the federal government's standard multiplier that translates into 23,400 well paying high tech jobs in a state that has been suffering through a notorious brain drain.

And while it's true that much of this was simply building on the policies that Ed Jennings instituted in the eighties, the same could be said of Gee and Kirwan's tenures. Holbrook's stewardship of the university can't be completely negated.

Its not like athletic have suffered while she's here. I wouldnt say she's responsible for the athletic success in recent years, but she certainly hasnt done anything to impede athletic success.

On another note, I heard that she was the reason why OSU doesnt have one huge student section for football games. A) Is this true? and B) Would the next president finally put all (or most) the students together? I dont even know if thats really under the direct control of the schoop president, but its just what I heard.

I agree fully. My comment upon pasting the link was solely based on the tailgating issue and what I have read from current students. Both probably errors in judgment on my part having no personal knowledge. I am aware that tOSU is on the rise in academic areas, kudos for that should be passed around and should not be deflected from the Presidents door. Her stewardship, as you put it, should be respected. Things can only do one of three things, stay the same, decline, or improve. At OSU they have improved and that is a good thing.

I haven't seen this issue discussed by her in a while. Let's remember that she is the University President while discussing this.

thelantern

Last week, Lantern editors sat down with President Karen Holbrook to discuss issues that are affecting Ohio State students. This week, we will be running the president's responses to our questions.

Today, the president answers questions about tailgating and the arrests of OSU students in the fall by the STOP program.

Check back tomorrow for the president's final answers about her decision to move to Florida and the state of spring quarter's commencement speaker.

I hate that woman

I don't understand why people dislike her. What has she done to get people so pissed at her? (Honestly lol, I'm just asking because I'm curious.) She has done a lot to bolster the academic reputation of the school. I know that I would probably not have decided to go to OSU if it weren't for the increase in the competitiveness during her tenure.

THis should get a few comments...

OSU became better university under President Holbrook
The Ohio State University President Karen Holbrook is retiring at the end of this month, after a five-year tenure that was, at times, a test of whether some OSU students and boosters saw their institution as one of higher learning or ? there?s no diplomatic way to put this ? a party school.

Holbrook came down on the side of improving OSU?s reputation as one of the nation?s truly fine universities. For that, she is to be commended.

During her time at the helm, OSU gained an improved reputation for academic excellence, in part because of a decision to impose more rigid admissions requirements. Members of the university?s board of trustees, with Holbrook?s backing, agreed to eliminate an ??open admissions?? policy that for many years had made it virtually automatic that any Ohio student would be accepted into the university ? regardless of his grades. Such a policy was, of course, ridiculous for OSU, the state?s flagship institution of higher learning.

Holbrook softens OSU 'orgies' remark
Ex-president bemoans 'culture of rioting,' drunken game days

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ex-President Karen A. Holbrook called football games "drunken orgies" in a job interview.

Former Ohio State President Karen A. Holbrook acknowledged yesterday that she might have exaggerated when she described Buckeye football games as "absolute drunken orgies."

"Maybe it was a little melodramatic," Holbrook said.
Some current and former OSU students, and a former university board president, say that the picture Holbrook painted of Ohio State during a job interview last week in Florida was over the top.

As someone who's repeatedly defended her on this board, there's no excuse for what she did. I still think that she did a solid job running the university and that she deserved that bonus, but for her to turn around and trash the university is b.s.

This complete lack of tact and public relations common sense, however, is precisely why she would have been the wrong person for the next several years--dealing with Strickland and Fingerhut in forming the new university system and running the 2.5 billion dollar fundraising campaign. Wexner and Ong were correct in making a change.
