OSU to allow Hineygate to continue for 3 more Buckeyes games

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Hineygate lives on, at least for three more parties.
Wendell's Alumni Grill and Ohio State University have reached a tentative agreement to continue the popular Buckeyes pregame event through the end of this football season, officials confirmed today.
OSU won ownership of the Thirsty "I" restaurant at 300 W. Lane Ave. last week after the restaurant owners defaulted on their rent payments. Attorneys for OSU had threatened to bolt the doors.
Hineygate was sponsored by WTVN (610 AM) and had been held at the Wendell's site since OSU took over its previous location, the Holiday Inn on the Lane.
Without a venue, it appeared Hineygate was dead. Fan reaction was swift and negative against the university on local Web sites.
Mike Elliott, program director for WTVN, said in an e-mail this morning that the decision had changed and referred calls to OSU.
"The university has reached an agreement in principle with Wendell's Alumni Grill to pay rent and continue operations until the end of the year," said OSU spokeswoman Shelly Hoffman. She declined to elaborate.
A signed contract was still being finalized, an attorney for OSU confirmed.
The pregame party has been a Lane Avenue staple of home football games since 1984. Last spring, OSU bought the hotel property and converted it to dormitories.
Wendell's sought to bring the party to their parking lot, but OSU took the case to court because of the back rent.
