HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Maybe this was posted earlier and I missed it. Either way, if you in ANY fucking way support some of the things said in here or think it's justified over a fucking football game, check yourself. I've been saying it all season. I've been saying it in previous seasons - this job isn't worth it for anyone who wants anything beyond the paycheck. The sad part is, the threats part is absolutely believable (e.g. EJ Liddell, idiots venmo'ing CJ Stroud to say stupid shit, etc)....

The real-world stuff aside, the point of this article from a football standpoint misses the mark because it doesn't matter. The Game is now in his head. I think everyone, from his detractors to supporters, would have to acknowledge that now. It doesn't matter if he thinks about it once a day, or 50 times an hour, or only during the season, or every day of his life, or only during Michigan week. It doesn't matter if he has Woody clocks and carpets, or John Cooper's "but I beat Penn State and Notre Dame" tattooed on his forehead. It's in his head now. And the rest of the coaches and the players are going to feed off of that, positively or negatively. Obviously we know which one it's been.

The only relevant question is...can it ever get out of his head once it's in there? Even Cooper Scooper beat them twice, but it was always in his head. And one of those wins came after what to that point was possibly the most inexplicable loss in modern program history. So the question really is...can you lose 4 in a row and then bounce back and win 4 out of 6? 5 out of 7? Because if not...it's going to be a long ugly ride every third (or fourth) Saturday in November as long as he's here. And it's going to be a bigger hole to dig out of the more of them he loses.

Because the Michigan QB won it for them in 2016 & 2013.

There's no justification for losing this game. I'm not in that business.

My only point is Urban himself is not good enough for OSU fans. Not the version they enjoyed at OSU, and definitely not the broken one you'd get now (or the one they fired).

When you realize that, you'll realize how poor the odds are in replacing Day with someone better. This is nothing like firing Holtmann. The exact system is inches away from a NC.

The CURRENT team is in the top-3 odds for a NC, despite that performance. That's how close they are now.
I agree with most of this post but the only part was that UFM was definitely good enough for me even if our fanbase disagrees, and it was a huge mistake to part ways with him. Huge mistake. He would not be 0-4 against ttun since his tenure ended. Tressel I kind of understood even though I didn't like it, but UFM was tragic to me. I lost it when UFM resigned (forced to resign for BS reasons).

But I face the same conceptual struggle in terms of a replacement. There are maybe equivalents out there, but is there someone better? And Day is a hell of a guy and brings in recruits, so do you replace a hell of a guy with an equivalent? To me the answer is yes just to set the standard. However, the recruiting class coming in will basically fall apart and we will have top players leaving into the portal if we do that.

So it's the conundrum of crash, burn and rebuild, or keep the same staff and have a new standard of a 2-loss team and never win The Game despite obvious talent advantages. I don't get paid to make that decision, but it is a decision that has to be made.

Welp…at this point 2-10-1 feels like it’s a mark that Day wants to eclipse and most people here are cool with it because’ZMOG WHO WOULD REPLACE HIM???? ’

Smith is outta here, isn’t he? Unreal.

I'm 100% fine with hiring whatever dipshit coach people were making fun of a month ago. Go get Campbell. If he makes this team and program better, I'll happily eat crow. If he fails and turns OSU into a 9-3 program with worse recruiting while maybe beating Michigan, I'll be depressed but momentarily laugh my ass off.

Honestly I think him leaving post 2018 was the best was for him to go. Meyer wouldn't have held it together another season, much less 5. He's an amazing coach, but after year 5 he can't manage the staff or his emotions, everything falls apart, and we start seeing inexplicable losses and whole position groups degrade. And he'd win this year but he's not winning the last 3.

One thing I dont blame Day for is how he responded to all the postgame BS. He was in a no win situation. If he does nothing he doesn't look great. If he gets in the middle of everything and gets involved in a fracas he'd be criticized. If he makes his team get off the field and Michigan turns midfield into a discotheque that's not going to go over well
If he won The Game, anything he did would be golden. Having lost The Game and with half the fanbase ready to run him out on a rail, of course they're going use whatever he did against him.

Current state of the program: Dayed and Confused

I think it’s fairly obvious what people see in Ryan Day. He’s articulate, has high football concept IQ, and he says all the right things. Unfortunately, actions speak louder than words. He’s not a head coach. That’s ok. There are plenty of former head coaches in OC/DC roles, or even position coach roles. Those coaches have “earned” their positions, and so has Day.

One of my concerns with Day from the outset was his lack of “connections” in college football. I thought he addressed that by keeping Urban’s best and cutting dead weight. In reality, Day’s coaching tree is more like a graveyard.

He’s a really smart, high functioning dumb guy. The problem with this is they think they are the smartest guy in the room (or stadium) even when proven otherwise. You also can’t just fix dumb. There’s no 12 step program. There’s no rehab. I think worst of all it is infectious. Rather than lifting up position coaches, it seems like they have all been stuck in low orbit. If you ask me to recall one offensive highlight from the last 4 years against Michigan, I would have a hard time. Same for defense, outside of Sawyer’s interception on Saturday. Players aren’t making plays. While I think it is up to the players, I think it is influenced by the way they are being coached - scared.

I don’t hate the guy, I just think he should be old fashioned fired. The AD already has a short list because he knew this was a possibility when he was hired. It’s no secret it was Big Ten / National Championship or bust this year. Maybe OSU can wake up out of their Dayze, or maybe they’ll roll out a sequel to last year’s Cotton Bowl vs Missouri. Mind you, we’re less than a year removed from Ohio State’s last worst showing ever, where we (yes, the collective we) were embarrassed and Day and his staff were outcoached by a middle of the road SEC team and coach. They say they want it, but as we’ve learned, words are empty if you don’t know how.
Honestly, I think Day is a good coach, and can be even better if he get's out of his own head.

When I implored Bjork to intervene, I just want somebody to keep Day's in a good place.

Chip I was hoping would be that person.

Day is our coach and we need to support him and the team.

There is zero doubt that something changed for The Game alone. There needs to be a discussion within the system on how they got there and work forward to try for it to not happen again.

I just think we got to PC because a coach that UFM had no real control over cost him a job. He needed to hand the reigns over, but a transition year would have been wise to me. There is a learning curve for HC that needed to be taught from UFM and it never happened. This is hindsight in a sense but UFM should have had one more year.

I see what you mean. A better planned transition would've been good.
