HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Ohio State's Ryan Day: Won't call plays; no Bill O'Brien update

Ohio State coach Ryan Day confirmed he's giving up offensive play calling for the 2024 season, although the status of his hand-picked successor, Bill O'Brien, will be determined in the coming days.

Day struggled with the decision to give up play calling and joked Wednesday, "I haven't done it yet, so we'll see." But the realities of how college football has changed required him to pivot. He said O'Brien "checked all those boxes" for what he sought in a replacement.

"I know that is an ideal situation moving forward," he said. "Do I want to? No. I don't. I love the football part of it."

As the Boston College decision looms, O'Brien is set to oversee a quarterback room that swelled in recent weeks with the transfer additions of Kansas State's Will Howard and Alabama's Julian Sayin, ESPN's No. 9 overall recruit in the 2024 class. Howard started 27 games at Kansas State and has only one year of eligibility left. Ohio State also brings back Devin Brown, who pushed Kyle McCord for the starting job last year, as well as Lincoln Kienholz and another decorated incoming freshman, Air Noland.

Day expects a "fierce competition" at quarterback, beginning in spring practice.

"Will came here to play football, so I hope that's his mentality, and I hope all the guys have that mentality," Day said. "He's got to learn the offense and get going."

Ryan Day says Ohio State will 'adapt' if Bill O'Brien leaves offensive coordinator post for Boston College

Day also confirmed he will give up play-calling duties in 2024 regardless of O'Brien's decision

Despite rumors that Ohio State offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien has emerged as a leading candidate for the Boston College coaching vacancy, it's apparently still full steam ahead as of now for the first-year Buckeyes assistant in Columbus, according to coach Ryan Day.

"No update [on O'Brien]" Day told reporters on National Signing Day, which marked the first time he's spoken publicly since the start of the new year.

Day did confirm, though, that there are contingency plans in place should O'Brien depart.

"It isn't one of those situations where you take one guy out and put another guy in there," Day said. "We'll have contingency plans in place. Hopefully we don't go down that road, but if we do, we'll adapt."

"At Ohio State we're chasing that 1-to-2 percent," Day told reporters. "For me, to be able to hand over a lot of the duties that I was doing, I was looking for someone that had a great background in the NFL, in the SEC. [O'Brien] had a great background as a former head coach."

RYAN DAY STILL EVALUATING OPTIONS FOR OHIO STATE'S FINAL ASSISTANT COACH OPENING

1. One of the options that seems most logical is to promote James Laurinaitis to be a full-time linebackers coach. The former Butkus Award winner at Ohio State and eight-year NFL veteran returned to Columbus as a graduate assistant from Notre Dame before the 2023 season. He's made an impression on the coaching staff in that time. On Dec. 26, Jim Knowles said it's "really important" for the Buckeyes to keep him in 2024 and beyond.

2. Another option on the table is to add an assistant defensive line coach.

3. Lastly, Day has had a special teams coordinator each year he's been the Buckeyes' head coach. With Fleming's firing, there is currently no one on staff with designated special teams duties. Day said he could possibly oversee special teams himself, but he's also considering hiring a new special teams coordinator.

"There's a lot that comes into that last (assistant) spot, and I think both of those options (special teams coordinator or another defensive assistant) are on the table," Day said. "I feel comfortable going either direction, but finding the right guy is gonna be what's important."

Whoever the new assistant coach is, Day said Ohio State is "probably about a week away" from making its final decision.

By far the most interesting part of this to me was his candor in talking about the new relationship between the two conferences that can still (meaningfully) be called Power conferences.

He spoke openly about the power to make rules and the power to enforce them. Further, he talked about creating real punishment for those who break rules.

There are two major inferences that I draw from this:

1) He is openly, unapologetically talking about replacing the NCAA
2) He appears to want the new structure to have a stronger hand in dealing with the CUNTS of the world
