HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Go on....
He's changed the way he called games. He used to abandon the run if it's not working. He's gone a lot more heavy personal in short yardage. His sideline demeanor changed from stoic to fiery this year. He's looked for a head coach of the defense and let him run his D instead of dictating Single high cause it was hard for him to go against like he did under Coombs. He brought in Frye to add more variety to the run game. I'm also pretty sure he goes for it now from the 1 yard line far more than he did early in his career.

You can argue with the success of his changes. But to say he's same coach as he was when he was hired is being Disingenuous.

I think he does need to find somebody who lights the intensity level in the program.

I think they are recruiting more Ohio kids and kids who have a little edge to them. I do see a different type of player they are after now.

Our DB recruits are definitely along that line.

A lot of people were bashing TreV last year but he was struggling with injuries. We saw what a healthy TreV can do this year. Since the ND game Kyle has been struggling with a bad ankle sprain. He had two ankle sprains going into the game up north. He hasn't been healthy most of the season.

As far as Ryan Day is concerned, he won in '19, TTUN took the cowards path in '20 and then cheated in '21 and '22. Day is 1-1 as far as I'm concerned. And would definitely be 2-1 if they played during the covid year. An up vote from me for Ryan Day at this point. I'm my mind he hasn't lost 3 straight to the cheaters.

The issue with that argument, IMO, is that poor decisions or late decisions have nothing to do with his ankle. He's throwing balls late because he's nervous and he can't read a defense fast enough. If you're going to be a QB in this system you have to be able to make anticipation throws and I don't think McCord did that once all year. The majority of the time he's throwing guys closed rather than throwing them open by making decisions way too late.

That is pretty much expected by most QBs as a first year starter and he's improved at it. Not as much as CJ improved but his starting point was lower as well. I fully expect there to be competition in the offseason and if he's beat out so be it. But I fully expect him to continue to improve there as well

Birm specifically calls for JT Barrett, who is coaching QBs in Detroit right now, as a guy to bring in to coach the QBs at Ohio State.

Birm also calls out the demeanor of the team from the sidelines. He says he did not witness any emotional leadership from coaches or players on the sidelines—other than Laurinaitis and Sawyer.

They then discuss that one answer needs to be Ryan Day not actively working to keep emotions bottled up on the team, especially in The Game.

Birm also calls out Larry Johnson for not being willing to adapt; specifically trying to go to a five man front to stop the run. And also, as I have been harping on but Birm didn’t mention, sabotaging the implementation of the Jack position.

I listened to the last two episodes of THE Podcast and it made me more sympathetic towards Day. I agree with the basic sentiment, that more needs to be done about the intangibles of the players having more passion. Day has to figure out out to channel a fire within the locker room. Hiring players who played at OSU in the past is probably a step in the right direction.

Landis actually believes Day called a decent offense. The execution was lacking.

The issue I have with getting rid of LJ is there are some 5 star caliber DL coming in that can be difference makers. How do you keep LJ happy and transition away, so there is some sort of future?

I mean, Day is the reason that's so tamped down. We're across multiple classes of players at this point, all showing the same lack of fire and passion. That's not just bad luck. That's a product of team culture, which Day is in control of.

Stroud is in Houston right now showing more energy and swagger than he ever showed here.

It's another product of Day being scared. He's scared that if he lets them show any kind of emotion that it may be too much emotion. Everything the man does comes from the fear of what the downside might be. I think he's a good coach, I just think he cannot stay out of his own way mentally. He coaches like a man who thinks he doesn't belong as the head coach of this team.

He wants to build a pro style team and that's fine, but you can't have the "as long as my check clears" attitude that comes with it.

Listen to the podcasts. Everybody believes he understands the rivalry, but having a hard time figuring out how to approach it. They believe a change in personnel will help.

Again, unless Meyer agrees to come back, I am not sure anybody else out there can do a better job than Ryan Day at this point. I still believe he has it in him to be a legendary coach at OSU.

Thanks for posting the video, @Buckeye86
It was a good listen, and I agree with Birm about when/if watching a playback of this game next weekend or never.

One snippet that hit me between the eyes was the discussion about what he heard McCord focusing on in his pregame speech: "Don't make mistakes. Don't make mistakes." (paraphrased). I fully agree that's NOT the way to go into the Game.

Anyway, hope JL is a full staff member next year. Other than that, completely ambivalent about the remainder of this year.

I know Lincoln was only playing scrubs in North Dakota, but that Kid had big time swagger and emotion in all the sports he dominated in. Curious to see if that would translate to the OSU sideline. We need a qb that can fire up the troops.

Also I think Eichenberg's injury kept him from having the emotion needed to lead the defense to be just a few plays better ( or a obvious offensive PI called on 3rd down, that would have helped ) Hate to say it as he is a legend of the program, but letting him play may have been a mistake. I am sure hes a fucking warrior, no doubt in my mind, but the injury played some tricks on his mind and made him a little late a few times. Injuries just suck.

Tough when the whole season goes down the tubes with just a few plays. Another season gone in the blink of an eye. Still coming to grips with the loss.

Cie is from New Philly. You don't get much less hood than that.

He isn't wrong about the mentality though. Neither side of the ball has clear emotional leader. We also lack a consistent identity on offense.
And yet, we had a touchdown drive in the second half where we slammed it down their throat with eight straight runs into the end zone, which definitely indicates the opposite in terms of attitude and ability… before the defense had the opposite result when they needed a stop.

It’s complicated. But the bottom line that I agree wholeheartedly with is that Day needs to make some tough staff decisions this off-season at the positions we’ve mentioned—Fleming, Johnson, Dennis.

Walton has drawn my ire as well. Tell that grown-ass man to get TF off twitter or instagram or whatever and stop trying to have internet beef with kids.
