HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Was Ewers ever actually going to play for the Buckeyes? I thought he came here because the NIL passed in Ohio and he could cash in here but not in Texas then once Texas passed a NIL bill, he was able to get it in the place he actually wanted to be at. Like I understand Day giving him a spot and gambling that maybe once in the building he could potentially help to keep him but if Ohio doesn't pass a NIL bill before Texas, I'm not sure Ewers ever steps foot in Columbus.
I think the NIL law gave Ewers the chance to go to Columbus to learn from the QB whisperer and roll the dice that he can beat out CJ in year 2. I honestly think he saw how good CJ was and That was enough to transfer. He would have sat 1 year but not 2 and he couldn’t risk that.

Amen. Our guys were hungry and played hard all day. Harrison did back off a little on a couple plays but he was all in otherwise.

The guys could have really used a big spark play….and since scum didn’t turn it over, we should have tried some blitzes and trick plays. But just more and more vanilla…..all game. Bizarre.

The lack of more creative plays has been frustrating.

Also, to the people holding up Luke Fickell as the example it's not so easy to win here... If I recall correctly he didn't really have control of the offense, we lost our starting quarterback and had the worst quarterback that I've ever seen in Ohio State playing with the Jim Bolman let offense. Thought there was a story about Vrabel throwing the playbook at him but maybe I am not remembering, but that was a definite s*** show, I've never placed the blame at his feet because I don't think he was really in charge.

For us born in the 80s can you tell me what it was like when Ohio State could not recruit? I've never known it thanks to Ryan Day.

The point isn't that only Day does it, but he's one of the few that do it this well, especially coming off Meyer's recruiting.

And I would point to 2003-2007 recruiting being the reason Tressel could never seriously compete with the top SEC teams. Along with the devastating DB recruiting from 2017-2019 setting that room back until basically this season.

I think it is time that the powers that be put serious pressure on Day to give up play calling.

He is obviously a great offensive mind, however this was another game where things seemed disjointed, and a leader was necessary. I think he can't act aggressively, because he is pulled in different directions.

If Hartline is not ready, then get somebody else to be a real OC.

This whole thing is super frustrating.

He can’t act aggressively because he’s not aggressive. It’s not a product of the play calling responsibility, it’s just who he is.

He’s not a leader, he’s a micromanager.

He has it in him. Against UGA he was super aggressive, as well as Clemson, and even Scum when he was simply the OC.

He clams up in the game. Maybe he won't change.

He’s 5 years into this. It ain’t changing.
So are you suggesting moving on? I don't see any potential candidates out there that I trust the program with to replace him with. A bad hire can totally destroy the program.

I think he is doing a good job. He needs to do much better with Scum.

Austin Ward and Zach Boren highlight Parker Fleming, LJ Sr., and Corey Dennis as the tough staff decisions Day needs to deal with this off-season.

I put them in order of priority in my opinion.

Boren was indirect, but he emphasized position coaches over Day as the people who need to put the fire into players, highlighting Vrabel as a coach head butting players on the sidelines getting them fired up to make a play, and then pointing out the lack of fire in the D, and especially the front six, to make a play and get off the field on the final UM drive.

I’ve been beating this drum for awhile and am looking for confirmation of my bias, but both seem like pretty direct examples of him calling out LJ Sr. for not getting more out of his players.

Ward also calls out the drop off if JTT and Sawyer leave as a recruiting failure.

I think Dennis is the least urgent, and have heard he’s pretty good. But Day can seemingly carry a heavy burden with QBs in recruiting and coaching, and can use that coaching position more effectively.

Fleming and Johnson are definitely higher priorities.

I'm working to put something together on the staff and looking at things .... just a pain to find all the data in one spot that is in a decent format.

if anyone has any link to something thats free and has multiple years of coaches I'd love it... for now I'm copy/pasta format wiki entries... painful

Fleming certainly, and I don't mind moving Johnson to some sort of analyst or support role and replacing him.

Not sure about Dennis, but it's clear to me that Hartline is an OC in training and if you want Day to give up playcalling and have someone else hold Hartlines hand, it has to be for someone who has experience. Find a great offensive mind who can coach QBs.

This year we have some DL studs committed, if they do sign. LJ did a good job this year.

The rest are totally free game.

Since we are, at minimum, 2 full seasons away before any changes will occur, we can only hope some things DO change.

Here's a list (obviously not inclusive):

1. The culture MUST change. It doesn't have to be a Greek Tragedy where everyone dies in the end, but there has to be more of a warrior culture within the program. The Dancing video with Day in the middle and the embarrassingly soft gritty fadeaway video stuff needs to end with this season.

2. There is a blue print to beat Ohio State. Strong lines and ball control offense. The issue is what the focus is and should be - should Ohio State build to beat the scUM and Ped State's of the world and win the B1G or should they be built more like the flashy SEC and Big 12 teams that need to score 40 points to win. Teams like scUM tried to run with Ohio State in the Meyer-era and got burned. So they went in the other direction. While not wanting to go fully in that direction, there has to be a strategy to counter this without significant tradeoffs going forward. Right now that tradeoff is becoming uber-conservative on offense and defense (which was pure vanilla yesterday).

3. Special teams MUST be special going forward. You have 4 and 5 star recruits throughout the roster. Use them.

4. Speaking to the special teams thing, for the love of God ditch the full-time Rugby style punting scheme.

5. Talk is cheap. Stop. Play Tresselball here too.

6. Your main rival has taken your mojo. It's not just enough to beat them now, there has to be a fundamental change in how things are accomplished to regain the top spot and stay there.

7. The offense has to be tailored to the skills of your players. Yeah it's a lot easier to call an offense for a QB who is himself a weapon. Braxton Millers and Justin Fields and even JT Barretts are still somewhat rare. This is where a full time OC is needed to tailor the offense to their strengths. The offense felt like a square peg in a rectangular opening. It fit ok sometimes, but there were clearly elements missing. That must change.

Growth can happen. Day is still a relatively young man at 44 years old. By comparison, Tressel was 49, Meyer was 48 and Bruce was 48 and Cooper was 51 when they became Head Coach at Ohio State. So not only was he far younger (39), he was also taking on the Head Coaching gig for the first time ever. Even Woody at 38 had already been a Head Coach. While not perfect and certainly not as successful on a national scale as UFM and JT, he's way ahead of Bruce and Cooper.

To reiterate - growth can still happen. I estimate he has about 2 seasons with a new AD to really show that he can....the coaches who do tend to stick around the longest. The ones who don't or can't end up on the scrap heap of history.
