HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

College football rankings: Best, worst Power Five coaches against top-25 teams

RYAN DAY, OHIO STATE

Overall record as head coach against top 25 teams: 16-6 (72.8%; No. 1 nationally)
Day is 45-6 overall at Ohio State and all of those losses have come against nationally-ranked competition, including half against top 3 teams. Last season's setbacks against Michigan and Georgia might've been the toughest to stomach given the Buckeyes' expectation level. They nearly took out the Bulldogs in the College Football Playoff semifinals and gave the eventual national champions their most competitive game of the year. He recently topped the 247Sports analysis of likeliest coaches to win their first national title in the near future

Ohio State AD Gene Smith offers further backing for Ryan Day, 'he's our coach for the future'

“He’s really grown,” Smith said of Day. He’s really, really good,” Smith told the Columbus Dispatch. “You said it. 45-6. At the end of the day, sure, we have to win that game (against Michigan). We’ve got to win the Big Ten championship and get to the national championship game and win that at some point, which is something that he aspires to do. But he’s done a great job. You look at the culture of the team. They’re good young men. That’s the culture you want. He’s embraced the things that were in place after Urban (Meyer) left, but then he’s enhanced so many other things. I feel great about him, and he’s our coach for the future.”
Regarding Day's record against Michigan, the Ohio State coach was one win away from reaching the national championship game, which would have been his second appearance as a head coach.

“He’s not in that situation at all,” Smith said of the hot seat. “But that’s normal. That’s what we all deal with. The platforms of people being able to express their opinions have changed. You’re going to hear from everyone, no matter whether they’re rational or prudent. It’s the truth. I always keep it in perspective. His record is phenomenal.”

"If I were betting on the starter, my money would go on McCord, but that doesn't mean I'd rule out Brown. From the practices we saw this spring, neither player stood out as the guy at that point, as both had positive moments and ones they want back. Brown gives the Buckeyes a bit more athleticism, which may actually be needed if this offensive line isn't sorted out by the time the season starts. Both players are certainly talented and I trust Ryan Day and his staff to make the right decision. But no, it would not totally surprise me if Brown was able to win the job in fall camp."

If you watch this clip, you remember exactly why everyone should love Ryan Day and want him as our coach. Yes, two straight losses to the team we hate sucks, but he is an amazing human being and is so well spoken...well-versed and you can tell how much he loves his job and college football. Please for the love of god beat ttun next year so we can just end this whole conversation.

Obviously beating ttun is a huge priority, but if I were Coach Day I'd be all over my staff, GAs, professors and anyone else who might know shit that reckless driving, touching people without their permission or any other fucking grabassery, will not be tolerated at all while the rest of the country is falling apart!

He's been great in the department so far but let's not get complacent.

Agreed this is almost purely motivation tactics. Not sure it matters for upcoming opponents on the schedule as there is little film for either. May also be motivated by reducing risk of a potential transfer for the backup coming out of this competition and leaving us with less depth.

I mean isn’t there a chance he’s being a bit truthful? Between Soring and now maybe McCord just really hasn’t blown him away yet..? I heard on the pod that he threw a few interceptions so maybe he just looks meh

What pod?

Go back and listen to any fall camp presser when there was a QB battle. He says the same exact thing every time. “Need more consistency” or “hasn't done anything spectacular, but we don’t need him to” or “limit mistakes and trust the guys around him.”

It’s like a script.
