I just watched the first episode, so consider me the East German judge. I didn't think it was all that. Great thing about Band of Brothers is that they actually took a lot of time in the first two episodes to develop the main characters fully before moving into combat scenes. By the time they went into combat you actually had a sense of who these people were and a reason to care for them. Here...uh, not so much.

I'm not saying that the series can't right itself with 9 full episodes to go, but I wasn't blown away from the start as I was with BoB.

I sort of agree. I had to watch the first episode twice just to figure out who was who. Even then it was still confusing at times. Not enough intro into the main characters to develop any connection with them.

A little better after the second episode. Leckie and Basilone really stick out now...they are sticking to specific character development each episode instead of a slow intro to all the characters at the beginning (Sledge is also starting to emerge). Although I think the initial Band of Brothers benefited from having a book for in depth looks at the characters. It may have been tougher with the Pacific.

This isn't BoB. It's meant to be different. In the making of feature, they explain how instead of following a group, it's more about three individuals. I think they plan on developing the three (lucky, sledge, and Basilone) over the first few episodes, instead of at the beginning. I fucking love it. I figure I'll like Lucky the best, but Basilone was a legit bad motherfucker.

The other thing I LOVE about this show, is that it seems more...real...to me. By that I mean...men, at war, I figure...would be cussing a shit ton more than they did in BoB. Now these Marines aren't shy about going the fuck off verbally.

Loved the part where the reports from Japanese papers came in about The Marines not being regular soldiers. That they were recruited from prisons and insane asylums for blood lust..."At least they got that right".

Fucking brilliant.

Surprised there hasn't been any activity in this thread. I have to say I'm a little bummed after watching this weeks episode, but that's what you get with real life. I guess it's what I get for not Wikipediaing some of the characters like I do with The Tudors. I couldn't imagine doing what my Grandpa and his generation had to do.

No shit. The last couple of episodes have been pretty rough to watch. I still say I'm just not as attached to the characters as I was in BoB, probably because there wasn't as much character development in The Pacific prior to the war scenes. That said, it's been really very well done in its own right.

Anybody finish watching the series?

Didn't compare to BoB in the least, though I will say it was graphic and accurate, at least as much as I can recall from my days as a History major. Didn't give in to sensationalism or unnecessary dramatization.
Made for a hard to follow story, but when you are telling a true story, it doesn't lend itself to a simplistic script.

Good, but not fantastic. C+ IMHO.
