Greg Schiano (HC Rutgers Scarlet Knights)

With Grinch gone, it allows Day to "bust" Schiano back to safety coach. Schiano excelled at that.

That allows the next move, which is to bring in a defensive coordinator that also coaches linebackers, just like cool hand Luke.

Schiano can then be codefensive coordinator again, fine.

Sure, GS was a "Meyer guy", but I think Bill Davis was the biggest "Meyer guy" on the staff.
Pure speculation: the real friction was between Grinch and Davis, and Schiano was caught between a rock and a hard place trying to mediate between the two - go with what the young gun is saying needs to happen or not rock the boat so much and let the HC's best-man do what he wants to do. So, the young gun takes his ball and goes home. It'll be interesting what happens with Davis... Davis is the guy we need to be following on flight-tracker.
Oh, I've been beating the "Davis is the malignant tumor" drum all year. I think the LB woes were the biggest issue with the D.

The LBs are the glue that holds the line and the backs together. They're like the clutch in a car that connects the engine to the drivetrain. If they can't do what they're supposed to do, everything else buckles in around them. I posted an interview in the Davis thread where Davis is basically absolving himself from the responsibility saying that the defense is a unit and that the LBs are a single piece of that unit. But what he's missing (or not fessing up to) is that the LBs probably are the most critical link in that unit. Not a newsflash, but the LBs are the QBs of the defense. When they fail, everybody on that side fails.

Marcus Freeman and Al Washington both plied their trade as LB coaches. To me, it’s one or the other on this staff. With Grinch leaving, one of the new defensive assistants needs to have a background coaching DBs.
Actually Washington has been more of a DL coach (and special
teams) in his caeer so far, but if we lose both DC's and Davis (and Johnson?), I see room for both those guys and a new DB coach (or two) on this defensive staff. After all, this is the 10-assistant era now.

No get them both, and have Freeman focus on LBs, and on scheme. While Washington works with LJsr on the DL(as we're starting to be on borrowed time with him now). Still pursue another name to coach S and CBs. A name that I've seen pop up is Bill Busch from LSU(apparently OSU had some admin in Baton Rouge today according to 11W). He was a QC coach for OSU in 2015, so he has ties already, left to be a co-DC at Rutgers and coach DBs. He or Corey Raymond may have been who was spoken to

Upon further review, I stand corrected. That’s what I get for utilizing 247Sports for his career history. Of course, I don’t think anyone can blame me for not looking it up on Michigan’s official website. I try to avoid giving them web traffic

The only break I will cut Schiano is I know he understands how to coach more than one defense, and he has to be smart enough to see what he fugged up this year and he must start the spring with a new scheme, a simple scheme that is time tested that the players can execute and trust. He is capable of designing something different than last year. However, we were so damn bad last year, 9th in the B1G with the MOST talent, that is almost enough for me not to want to see him return.

Well, in fairness to Greg, we don't know what's going on behind the walls of the WHAC. He was always a "Meyer Guy", so i don't think anyone can say with any certainty that Day wants him or not. I'd lean towards wanting to keep him because he has a strong track record, is an excellent recruiter and a ton of experience that could help a first time HC. But, I'd also understand if Day wants to bring in his own guy.

If being critical of the schemes is being critical of GS, then I guess I’m a critic... but I’m leaning in the direction of too many chiefs and not enough Indians. With Grinch gone and hopefully getting Freeman in the fold we have Greg and Freeman Co-DC for one year while Greg looks. It gives some stability to the program, retains a great recruiter and all will be fine.

I would hope that Day, should this happen, put more responsibility on Freeman to take the reigns to make it his while allowing Greg to start his search.

But wouldn't bringing in Freeman also still have the "too many chiefs" dilemma?

For one year, absolutely. There would have to be a ‘Greg, you’ve got one year of transition to find where you land’ conversion.

Now, that said, I have no idea how it would play. But, given the attempt to have a seamless transition before and how that worked out... I would have to guess that an up front understanding would go a long way to add clarity to role definition and hopefully minimize the issue among chiefs.

I guess after thinking about it more, it would be a demotion in role, but not title or pay, for Greg. More or less what others here have suggested Urban should have done (if possible) with Warinner.

I don't think it's more of a "one year to find another place". I look at this more like a one year contract.

Grinch is gone but Bill Davis should have been the first one out the door. Bring in competent position/asst. coaches and give Schiano enough rope to hang himself with. If the defense turns in another poor performance
then you know exactly which wire to cut around this time next year. Admittedly, it's a pretty large risk to take though. But Davis is my key - he needs gone, like... yesterday. Also I still don't understand where the aggression on the perimeter with our DB's went to. Even in trail tech I hardly feel like they turn to locate the ball and try to generate turnovers. Any great defense this team has fielded in the last 20 years starts with the linebackers and DB's getting the ball back to the offense. 98', 02', 03', 05', 09', 10' 15' & 16'. The turnover game was significant those seasons.

That's a heck of a risk, and that transition sounds good on paper. But what if Schiano succeeds next year and wants to remain on staff? Do you keep him with Freeman(even though Freeman was set to become the next DC in charge)? Because if that happens, than we're back in the position that we're in now, where the young up and coming defensive coach feels slighted and bolts, Schiano stays with 1 foot still out the door. I think you shit or get off the pot with Schiano. Urban was great at "finding" open positions for his assistants when it wasn't working(Withers, Beck, Warriner, etc), and Day should probably do the same with Schiano, and fast, because he hasn't hid the fact that he's pursuing a number of HC opportunities. Let him go, pursue Freeman, show Davis the door and bring in Washington. Get younger, you don't lose any type of recruiting prowess(like we thought we would if we chose Grinch over Schiano), and suit the schemes to the massive amount of talent we have on this defense.
