Buddy Holly was an oversight he should have been on the list.

I put BIG and Tupac on the list becasue I think of "rock" as a wide classification.

Dime bag and the dude from Sublime while great, were not quite of the same ilk as these guys. They go under the ledgends catagory, not sure that they were that big time. I would have Sid Vicious and Croce (now thats a pair) classified with them.

I also think that Hank Williams Sr might be there cause he was a rockin as they get.

That's exactly how I voted. Hendrix would have been amazing to have around for many more years, but Lennon was such a big icon and still had great music left in him. Plus, the way Lennon died (being murdered) as opposed to ODing is a little more painful.

Kurt Cobain has got to be one of the most overrated rock stars ever. Dave Grohl is 20 times as talented, yet he'll never get the recognition b/c Cobain killed himself and Grohl was in Cobain's shadow during the Nirvana days.

Interesting. Lennon would have been my absolute last choice because I believe his social impact, apart from the band's initial entry into the US via the Ed Sullivan show, is utterly overstated, nonexistent, and to the extent there is actually any social impact, irrelevant.

Long hair, death knell of Brylcream, end of story.

Probably Lennon, just based on overall cultural impact, but these guys were taken too soon as well:

May I ask how old you are? because you have to be in your 20's and learned about Lennon from MTV. He was one of the leading voices against the war in Vietnam in the late 60's early 70's. Held demonstrations out of his hotel in Europe where all of the worlds press covered the events (he and Yoko naked in bed). Made anti war movies and was a general peace activist that was HUGE in influancing people. To say that Lennon was a flash in the pan pop star is an insult to one of the greatist men and thinkers of the 60's.

Oooooo, good one.

Good point. By that same token, Jim Croce was on the verge of mainstreaming his take on honky tonk when he crashed in an airplane in the 70s.

Jim Croce...Gone but not forgotten !!!

(I am not saying his potential influence would have exceeded Holly's or Valens', but just that ya never know...)

Croce will always be one of my favorites and the one guy who I'd love to have heard his next album. However, if you are looking for the one guy who had the biggest impact on the whole country-rock crossover, then you have to add Gram Parsons. His influence on the Stones (Honkey Tonk Women, Wild Horses) and inspiration of bands like the Eagles was huge.

The only reason I didn't vote for him was his death prevented us from having to put up with some pathetic Beatles reunion concerts. All kidding aside, Lennon's influence went well beyond his music.

Shannon Hoon was amazing...there are so many musicians you could talk about in this thread. The obvious ones like Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Johnny Cash, Brad Nowell and Syd Barrett...and then many lesser known but equally amazing musicians like Andrew Wood, Julio Venegas, Elliot Smith, Fela Kuti, Ausutus Pablo, Ian Curtis, Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, Johnny Ace and Darby Crash.

I voted for Marley because he defined a genre and because of the socio-political impact he had on not only a nation but the entire world.
