John Lennon. Not only because he was "John Lennon" but because the way he died. Just about everyone on that list would have lived alot longer if they had avoided doing things that tend to get you killed, cause you to die, or actually take your own life. When John was murdered, he had a new hit album as well as a great family. He had everything to live for and wanted to live. Not so sure about the others.

A lot of folks are forgetting about Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens...they already had started making their impact when rock and roll as we know it had just started. Who knows how rock and roll would've developed had they not died in that plane crash in 1959...

Agreed. I also think Tupac deserves more credit than he will probably get.
Since when is Tupac (or Notorious B.I.G.) "rock" stars?

If they shouldn't be included than neither should Bob Marley, Elvis, and Marvin Gaye.

I voted for Cobain on the fact that Nirvana is my favourite band and I just would have loved to have more of their music to listen to. However, in terms of social impact I would say Lennon or Marley, partially on the fact that their deaths weren't caused by their own bad habits but also they had the strongest message for social change of all the musicians on the list. I would also suggest adding Robert Johnson to the list, you don't really have Rock and Roll without him and who knows how things would have turned out if he lived past 27.

Good point. By that same token, Jim Croce was on the verge of mainstreaming his take on honky tonk when he crashed in an airplane in the 70s.

Jim Croce...Gone but not forgotten !!!

(I am not saying his potential influence would have exceeded Holly's or Valens', but just that ya never know...)

Hendrix gets my vote because of his talent... Jerry would have received my vote if it was purely for listening enjoyment.. I can only tolerate Hendrix on 11 for short period of times before I have to remove the ice picks from my tympanic membranes
