Greatest Actor of our generation?

Surprised that Mr Cruise's name has not popped up. He's a wack job but has played in some good movies.

Tom Cruise has been in some very good movies...despite the fact that he's a terrible actor. With the exception of Born on the 4th of July and parts of A Few Good Men, I can't think of a movie where he gave more than a HS drama club level performance. If you want to see some truly bad acting, check out Interview with the Vampire. Pitt sucked in that as well, but he's redeemed himself. There are parts where it seems like they didn't even read the script until the day of shooting. What really pisses me off about Cruise is that he was the one weak link in the stellar cast of Magnolia, yet he was the only one who got an Oscar nomination.

As far as the ladies, I would add Julianne Moore and Naomi Watts to LJB's solid list. Magnoia for Moore, and 21 Grams for Watts were both outstanding performances. Maggie Gyllenhall was great in Sherry Baby, but has yet to amass a body of work.

Somebody's been watching Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead.
I didn't say that...LJB did. How'd you fuck up a quote Muck? :tongue2:

I'm not overly impressed with most top-line actors. Too much of getting the prime roles is being good-looking and there are so many fine actors that will never catch a good role because they aren't attractive. Obviously, some of the lookers are talented, but those seem to be the exception.

Gary Oldman and Kenneth Branagh are fantastic choices.
Cate Blanchette and Kate Winslet as actresses.

EDIT - I really enjoy John C. Reilly as an actor, too.

Depp and Day-Lewis are good choices. However, I would choose either Gary Oldman or Tim Roth, perhaps Ralph Fiennes. Forest Whitaker is also quite good. Kenneth Branagh is amazing in Shakespearean roles. For actresses, Helena Bonham-Carter or Cate Blanchett, with Nicole Kidman in the dicussion. Hardly any Americans on the list.... :(

My wife was telling me about an article (or interview?) she read opining that the best actors generally are not American at this point because, In the US, only the best looking really get pushed into acting at a young age and there are far more roles, especially leading, available for good-looking actors. There are numerous immensely talented actors out there that you'll never hear from because they just aren't good-looking enough. Other countries, notably the UK, aren't as particular in that regard.

I have no idea just how true all that is, but it certainly makes sense to me.

Made me think of a name that hasn't been mentioned. Benicio Del Toro.
