Greatest Actor of our generation?

Pauly Shore.

I am clueless as why he did not get an oscar for this...

By "our generation", I'll assume age 50 or younger.

Depp and Day-Lewis are good choices. However, I would choose either Gary Oldman or Tim Roth, perhaps Ralph Fiennes. Forest Whitaker is also quite good. Kenneth Branagh is amazing in Shakespearean roles. For actresses, Helena Bonham-Carter or Cate Blanchett, with Nicole Kidman in the dicussion. Hardly any Americans on the list.... :(

Faves from long ago

Humphrey Bogart
Jimmy Stewart
John Wayne towards the end of his career added so much more texture to his roles.
Don't forget Cary Grant, perhaps the best ever. Also, Orson Welles and Laurence Olivier.

Yes?

Ok, no. 10 years ago, I would have said Ewan McGregor, but then he joined that cavalcade of suck that was the Star Wars I-III, and the Island.

Too bad because Trainspotting, the Shallow Grave are awesome flicks.

I would say that Christian Bale belongs up there, and man is that guy dedicated to his roles. I mean to do what he did to himself for the machinist, and then the Batman Begins flick is just sick.

I left out the ladies, because knowing this crowd like I do, it would turn into a massive "who's got the best tits" contest. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Good call on Tim Roth. Tim Robbins is another good one (aside from his politics). Shawshank, Hudsucker, The Player. All great parts.

Surprised that Mr Cruise's name has not popped up. He's a wack job but has played in some good movies.

Another name that should be out there is Matt Damon.

George Cloony is also very talented.
I'd go with names such as Hoffman, (Dennis and Phillip Seymore) Hanks, perhaps Jim Carey, because they have proven their ability to become someone other than themselves, whereas Freeman, Pacino, Washington, Wayne, Cruise et al, good as they are, are basically the same person in each movie.

Haven't seen much of him since Midnight Cowboy, but Jon Voight could act a bit.

As for the gals, Kate Blanchett is in a category all by herself. Even did a decent Bob Dylan.

Yes, because the leads in Remember the Titans and Training Day/American Gangster are quite similar.

I agree with Cinci for the most part but Denzel does have more range than he is given credit...but still it's nowhere close to some of the actors named so far.

I'd add Jack Nicholson to Cinci's list as well. I've never seen a role by Jack that didn't scream "Hey I'm Jack Nicholson!"

Jim Carey is definitely underrated but I don't think he's up there yet. He has the potential to be great but he keeps falling back into the same old roles. His newest movie being another prime example.

Robin Williams is a lot like Carey. He's spent most of this life playing Robin Williams (WOOHOO!!) but some of his later rolls (Insomia, One Hour Photo, The Final Cut etc) have been very impressive.

All in all my vote probably goes to Daniel Day Lewis.

He is simply amazing in everything he does. The thing that really hurts him is that he's not very prolific. He's only done what three(?) films in the past decade?

The bolded ones are absolutely at the top of my list, though I am concerned that they tend to play in movies that emphasize plot, dialogue, character development, etc. Especially that Shakespeare dude, always with the dialogue! :tongue2:

I have to say that it's the involvement of those three, and so many other leading British actors of the day (Brendan Gleeson is always reliable), that makes the Harry Potter movies so enjoyable.
