Glen Mason (official thread)

My question is if Minnesota doesn't retain Mason, then who exactly do they think they can get that would be a step up, or an equal? If they aren't willing to pay Mason, how exactly do they expect to pay a big time coach to replace him? They are going to have to settle if they can't renew his contract or go with someone like a George O'Leary or a Mike Price, who has a few run ins in the past, who could be available for the right price.

Exactly. He was one of a few people interviewed for the tOSU job. I don't understand how they don't just hand him what he wants.

What kind of contract is Callahan under @ Nebraska? I don't think they're ready to pull the rug out from him yet, but a thumping to scUM in the Alamo would certainly turn the heat up a bit more. Like others have said Mason would be a great fit in Lincoln.

Mason negotiations expected to pick up

Chip Scoggins, Star Tribune Last update: December 9, 2005 at 8:55 PM

Negotiations on a contract extension for Gophers football coach Glen Mason will enter their third week, and university officials remain hopeful that a deal will be reached soon.
One school official said the sides are not at a stalemate and that negotiations are expected to intensify next week. The school has offered Mason, who has one season remaining on his current deal, an extension that will keep him here for the next five seasons.
The sides are trying to resolve a number of issues, including the lack of a large-sum annuity, language pertaining to performance bonuses and increased pay for assistant coaches.
According to figures provided by the university, the Gophers ranked 10th out of 11 Big Ten teams in total compensation for assistant coaches for the 2005 season. The data only identified where the Gophers were in the rankings. It did not list the schools by name.
The Gophers paid their nine assistant coaches a combined $1.095 million this past season. The lowest figure in the Big Ten was $1.008 million; the highest was $1.664 million.
School officials have been reluctant to put a timetable on finalizing a deal, but they do face a deadline of sorts. Contracts for assistant coaches expire on Dec. 31, and the school must decide whether to renew those contracts. If they renew them but cannot reach a deal with Mason and part ways, the school would be forced to pay salaries for two coaching staffs for one year, which would create financial problems. If they don't renew the contracts, the assistants would basically become free agents.
"I'm hoping to get this resolved before that becomes an issue," athletic director Joel Maturi said.
More honors for Eslinger
Another day, another honor for senior center Greg Eslinger, who will be named to the Football Writers Association of America's All-America team for the second consecutive season today.
Eslinger won the Outland Trophy (nation's best interior lineman) and Rimington Trophy (top center) and was named to the Walter Camp All-America team on Thursday.
"It's just an awesome recognition for Greg Eslinger and very deserving," Mason said. "It's really a great recognition for our football program and another indication of how far we've come. Greg said right away that everybody in our program has a piece of that, and I think that's true."

<!-- begin body-content --> ) Don't be surprised if the scandal-plagued Colorado football program becomes a viable coaching option for Glen Mason, who has run a clean program at Minnesota. And the $3 million buyout that Gary Barnett received to leave as Buffaloes coach is expected to become an issue in negotiations for Mason's contract extension.

I don't want Carr to be fired from SCUM for obvious reasons, but IF he were then I would like someone like Glenn Mason to replace him. I consider Mason to be just an "average" coach, so I wouldn't be scared of him coaching for SCUM :)

If Glen knows what he is doing, he'll get on a flight to Colorado. There's nothing quite like the hang man's noose to focus a committee's attention. I think he has done a good job at Minnesota and they will have difficulty attracting his equal at the same salary if he leaves.

Does anyone here remember Glen Mason's past history? Read on and you may find an answer as to why Minnesota would not rush to lock up Glen.

This is an excerpt from the Minnesota Game Preview:

Few remember that Glen was also holding out for the OSU job in December of 1987. The Bucks took John Cooper and Mason when on to accept the Kansas job. In fact, Glen has somewhat of a history of putting one job on hold to see if a better offer comes along. This has never seemed to bother OSU fans, as it is usually the OSU job Glen is hoping will come along. Makes sense to us. Tends to make other folks angry.

After two seasons as the head coach at Kent, Glen was offered the job at Kansas. He held out for days hoping for the OSU job. Eventually (when OSU hired Cooper) he took the job at Kansas and stayed for 9 seasons (1988-1996), returning that program to respectability. Although in 1995 he accepted the head coaching job at Georgia ... only to change his mind a week later. He returned to Kansas for one lame duck season. In 2000 (as head coach at Minnesota), Glen interviewed for the Michigan State and LSU openings. He followed that up in early 2001 by going for the OSU job. Needless to say, many Minnesotans aren't too pleased with the cavalier attitude Glen shows the school.

I researched this information and I can tell you that the papers/writers from Kansas were not kind (at all) to Glen regarding the way he left the program. Folks in Minnesota are not all that happy either. He's interviewed for at least 3 other jobs since he's been there. Remember, there are 2 sides to a story. Locking GM up for 5 years really means nothing ... especially if you are GM (look at his history). If you were the administration/alumni/fans at Minnesota, would you feel secure that GM was staying even with a new contract? I wouldn't.

Don't print that

<!-- begin body-content --> ) A little birdie says the University of Minnesota is willing to give football coach Glen Mason a four-year contract extension worth nearly $1.5 million annually, plus performance bonuses for playing in major bowl games. The university also is willing to improve compensation for Mason's assistant coaches.
