General Recruiting Discussion and Tangents (Merged)

The SEC in general also tends to have far smaller athletic departments than the B1G schools. You have a lot of extra money left over when you only have Football, Basketball, Baseball & Track to support.

That's a good point, I think UF has like 21 varsity sports compared with Ohio State's 30+. And I think UF has the biggest athletic department in the SEC.

Penn State's class was really good before the events took place there a few months ago. It was looking like they were going to have Spence, Williams, Reeves, Schutt, O'Connor, and Cox in that class. It was setting up to be very good. However, I will gladly take all of those guys in our class. :wink2:

As for other teams, Michigan is fortunate that Meyer wasn't here at the beginning of last year, because Kalis, Bolden and other Ohio guys probably wouldn't be there. Hoke will not be so fortunate next year.

The Urban effect will take it's toll on every state in the big 10 region. Michigan State will be battling with Michigan for it's own state talent, because Urban will lock down Ohio for the most part.

Nebraska will struggle because it's state doesn't produce much talent, and they battle the big 12 for recruits.

Wisconsin may not reel in top 10 classes every year, but it appears they are able to get the guys that fit their system. They get huge lineman, good running-backs and tight-ends, decent defenders, and effecient QBs (although they use transfers more often than actual recruits). However, recruiting has picked up for them this year.

Iowa doesn't seem to put enough effort into recruiting. Ferentz and his staff seem very laid-back. He may have a viable team for a year or two, but then it's back to the middle of the pack for them for the most part. Plus, it's Iowa. Not exactly a place where recruits are crawling over each other to play.

Illinois has done well in years past, considering how bad they've been the last decade. Zook may not have been able to coach, but he could recruit. However, he is no longer there and it is yet to be seen how Beckman will fare in recruiting. There are a few elite prospects in Illinois next year (Issac, Tulley-Tillman, etc) and they don't seem to show much interest in the turtles.

Indiana, Purdue, Minnesota, Northwestern will never recruit top talent, because they will never be successful enough or tough enough to entice high level prospects to come there. Their tradition in football is next to nothing and they struggle to put people in the seats. Each of these teams (with the exception of NW) rarely go to bowl games and are always at the bottom of the conference. Some of the worst BCS teams in the nation.

The Gophers tradition, at least in NC's rivals the scUMmers, of course not only were the recruits not around then, people who didn't witness WWII or even WWI were around either

While the SEC is successful for many reasons, one of them is that the assistant coaches are quality, and well compensated, so seldom do they make a lateral move, it takes a big raise, or a promotion to get them to move.

Or a huge scandal that is about to break. See: Auburn.

Never heard of this. What's up?

DC Ted Roof left Auburn to coach at Central Florida before joining Penn State a month later. I would hardly call either one a "lateral" move for him.

Auburn OC Gus Malzahn left Auburn to be the head coach at Arkansas State- which included a significant pay cut. Once again, far from a lateral move in my opinion.

The scandal may or may not break, but either way both of those coaching moves scream "better safe than sorry" to me.

Free Rivals - Analysts: Add another signing period

Rivals.com's football recruiting analysts weigh in on a question of a day through National Signing Day on Feb. 1.

Today's question: If you could change one thing about National Signing Day in general, what would it be?

Mike Farrell: I'd actually make it a weeklong deal if I could. It's just not enough time for so much action to occur and I think it needs to be spread out a bit. But in its current state, I would love to eliminate the long, drawn-out press conferences and decisions by prospects. Taking an hour to name a school and having your third grade teacher speak about how you were growing up isn't really necessary. Step up to the table, pick your hat, tell us all why and be done with it. I really respect the players who have short, direct, to-the-point press conferences and don't play the game.

So a guy who has made his living drawing attention to the antics of recruits & is in part responsible for the current media circus thinks that the 'long-drawn out' press conferences should be eliminated and would prefer to stretch everything out over an entire week?

Tell me again who ties Mike Farrel's shoes in the morning because it's pretty clear he's not capable of doing it himself.

Wad, you think Dunn will have an impact as a freshman even though we have Hall, Hyde, Smith, and possibly Berry still ahead of him?
You watched those guys last year, right?

Hall, Hyde, Smith, and Berry combined for 238 carries for 1,095 yards (4.6 average) and 9 touchdowns and 3 fumbles lost (2 for Smith in just 29 attempts). Take out Hyde's 63-yard touchdown run, and the average drops to just 4.35 per carry.

If Dunn is truly a five-star talent, then he should have no problem moving his way up a depth chart with lots of bodies but almost as many question marks.
