General Recruiting Discussion and Tangents (Merged)

Yup, and the staff does seem to be right about these things the vast majority of the time. Having said that, they've missed on a few as well, so I'm not really sure that answers someone's question.

Who at the running back position has this staff missed on? IMO jury is still out on Mo.

I agree I am not worried about his stats. DeVier Posey has put up some big games but has not dominated each and every contest, but none of us are worried about his future. The talent and coaching surrounding the players in high school says a lot more about their statistics than their personal ability to perform. Recruiting is not as simple looking for high school superstars. Although I do agree that Ashley has what it takes to make a hell of a back at the next level, you can't compare stats at St. Xavier this year to stats at Massilon.

Ira Guilford perhaps too, although he wasn't recruited as an RB, but rather DB I think. My comment wasn't just about RBs, it was inclusive of any "misses" in recruiting. And it's not to suggest that the staff doesn't do an incredibly good job evaluating talent. I was just offering the feeling that we often make the statement that the staff thinks otherwise when someone questions a recruit and that this can gloss over a legit question.

The fact is that for average yodels like me, what the staff thinks IS good enough and I shouldn't really question it because I don't know jack... But, it's still possible that someone might have a dissenting opinion that has merit.

I'm not going to beat a dead horse. I made my point and I stand by it. Maurice Clarett looked great in S&G. So does Chris Wells. When someone runs a 10.38 and is Mr. Football in your state, you must offer him. DeVier Posey has looked well-nigh dominant when I've seen him--in games and at camp. Torrence would likewise look great in S&G--as a SS.

Wells Sr year HS (2005)
10 Games 223Rush Attempts 2,134Yards Gained 9.6Yards per Rush 28 Touchdowns
Junior Year - not sure of the number of games, but
212 Attempts1,939 Yards9.1 YPC20 - TD
Unspectacular?

Maybe Wells, Chris is the wrong comparative.

Like I said, for high school, those are 'good' numbers - but not spectacular. I remember one game where Haw had like 6 carries for 300+ yards and 6 touchdowns. That's spectacular - but it never translated in college football.

Apparently the staff does...

The staff has done a great job with evaluating talent, and it is hard to question any offers that they dole out as a result.

In the particular situation is not a good example however, because Devoe was offered after his junior year when he lit it up, and i believe he was even in the fold already before senior year started. Do you think he would be offered right now if it hadn't been extended yet?

i must admit, his results this year caused me to raise an eyebrow a bit. Usually an elite high school running back will truly dominate regardless of how good his line is, and whether the D is keying on him. I remember in Beanie's senior year the talk was how bad his line was, and he was getting killed. he ended up with over 2000 yds. 28 TDs and nearly 10yds per carry. And Pittman had an injury plagued senior year, and if memory serves had only about 1300 yds but over 11yds per carry.

At the end of the day, I'm not worried about his worthiness of an offer, maybe just his readiness as a freshman...at which point in time he won't be needed anyway...so its all good.

JMO but let's just say that I would offer Devoe over Brandon Beachum as either a RB or a LBer. I think with respect to RB, speed, burst and change of direction do not make this matchup even close. As far as LBers are concerned, Torrence is just as good as any of current LBer commits/prospects.

I don't understand why many are down on Devoe. If you look at his stats, he is having a very good year, maybe even a great year considering the offensive line he is playing behind, the injuries he has dealt with, and the overall pressure he has faced because of the jump from D3 Canton South to D1 Massillon Washington. His stats at Canton South were great, but I think it is a little unfair to have expected bigger stats this year. He probably missed out on the huge stats and awards he would have won if he was still racking up the yards at South, but in the long run, dealing with the pressure and major jump in competition will be a good thing. He has had some good games this year and some bad. Why focus on the bad games? His performance against Menton was enough for me to be sold.

it shocks me that anyone would question any of tressel's recruiting decisions.

I think civil discourse occasionally is acceptable if you have good reasoning because even JT can make his mistakes. However, I do trust his decisions even if I disagree because 9 times out of 10 he is usually right on. Last year I was a bit upset because it seemed we put all our eggs in one basket at DT and would be weak in the middle. Whether we can stop the inside against a good team remains to be seen after Kinlaw and PSU gashed our D last week. Was my argument legit? It appears it's possible (even though not many freshman make an impact at DT anyways), however we have/are going to clean up at DT/DL in '08 and '09. To question JT too much though is likely not legit though, so I agree in that aspect. In this case though I can't see a valid argument against JT though because DeVoe has exactly what the staff wants in a RB regardless of what his stats were this year. As someone else mentioned, Beachum can't touch DeVoe's burst, athleticism, and hands.
