Gene Smith (Former AD, ‘10 AD of the Year, '13 NAAC Organizational Leadership Award)

Dispatch

A rumor at the Big Ten's annual preseason football schmooze last week in Chicago had the Big 12 Conference interested in Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith to fill its vacant commissioner's chair.

Smith would not confirm whether it was true. Even if it was, he said, "I'm not interested."
Smith was athletic director at Iowa State, a Big 12 member, from 1993 to 2000 before moving to Arizona State. He came to Ohio State in 2005.

OSU's Gene Smith has no comment on Notre Dame job

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith repeated the question yesterday afternoon to let the words sink in, but this time he did it as a declarative statement.

"Kevin White was introduced as the athletic director at Duke," he said.

Smith, enjoying a day at the Memorial Tournament, might as well have been hit by a golf ball. It was stunning news that White, Notre Dame's athletic director since 2000, had just been introduced as the head of Duke's athletic department.

It had relevance for Smith. He not only is considered one of the country's top athletic directors, he's a 1977 graduate of Notre Dame. A defensive end there, he was a member of the '73 national championship team.

Which begged the next question: Would Smith be interested in the Notre Dame job? He didn't pause or repeat the question this time.

"I don't comment on such things," Smith said. "I'm happy where I am, and I don't even touch that stuff."

? Missy Conboy was named Notre Dame's interim athletic director within minutes of White being introduced as Duke's new AD.

Among the names likely to pop up during a search for a replacement are Ohio State athletics director Gene Smith, a defensive end on Notre Dame's 1973 national championship team; Mid-American Conference commissioner Rick Chryst, who played baseball for the Irish from 1981 to 1983; SMU athletic director Steve Orsini, a fullback on Notre Dame's 1977 national championship team; Xavier athletic director Mike Bobinski, who pitched for the Irish in 1976-79; Florida State senior associate athletic director for compliance Bob Minnix, a tailback for the Irish in 1969-71; and Tulsa athletic director Bubba Cunningham, a former associate athletic director for the Irish.
Lots of "qualified" candidates out there. I think he needs us more than we need him.

Gene Smith To Remain At Ohio State

Tuesday, June 3, 2008 2:38 PM

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said Tuesday that he is not a candidate for the same position at Notre Dame and will remain at Ohio State.

"I have the utmost respect for Notre Dame and great admiration for the university and its athletics department, but I will not be a candidate for the job there," Smith said in a statement. "I am very happy being at The Ohio State University and am excited about its new leadership of the university. I am thrilled with the direction we are going in the department and am pleased and thankful for the support of President Gee and the administration."

Wonderful news, indeed.

AD Smith seems to be carrying on the great work that was implemented by AD Geiger, who to me was the greatest AD we ever had here.

Best of luck for many more great years here Mr. Smth!

Peace.

Ohio State athletics: Smith says he isn't up for job at Notre Dame

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State issued a release yesterday stating that athletic director Gene Smith has no intention of pursuing the same job at his alma mater, Notre Dame. Smith should put a copy in his personnel file for use the next time he talks contract.

Because as football coach Jim Tressel said, "Gene Smith is the finest athletics director in America and we are so happy that he will remain at Ohio State. He cares about every student-athlete, every coach and staff member, and the entire Buckeye nation. This is a great day for all of us."

Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee, who recently made Smith an assistant vice president of the university, wasn't far behind in his praise of the man who runs the 36-sport, $110 million athletic department.

"Ohio State not only has the nation's most comprehensive athletics program, but also one that is thoroughly integrated into the larger academic life of the university," Gee said. "Gene Smith is a key factor in our students' successes both on the playing field and in the classroom, and I am delighted with his commitment to remain here at Ohio State."

Agreed on both counts -- that Smith staying is very good news, and also agree with your assessment of Andy Geiger's place in the history of tOSU athletics.

Good news about Gene Smith's decision to remain at tOSU. While I think tOSU would have no problem attracting another very qualified, excellent athletic director, Smith is already ingrained and in tune with the Coaches, Administration as well as all the current and future issues concerning buildings and such, and therefore there will be no transitioning, just more smooth sailing.

Ditto on Geiger being top notch, the wonderful foundation laid and strengthened by Geiger is being built on by Smith, great time to be a Buckeye fan
