High praise from SIOC. They say Smith has the Midas touch and should run for president of the USA in 08...

I think Gene Smith is doing an excellent job but, make no mistake, what we are witnessing today is the product of Andy Geiger. No offense to Gene intended but Andy hired these coaches and put all this into place.

the hirings were most certainly all andy geiger. but at this point i think gene smith definitely deserves props not necissarily for what he has done. but rather, what he didn't do.

don't forget the environment that he walked into. some very deep probing ncaa investigations, some still outstanding into the football program. several former players making rather ominous accusations in regards to the coaching staff. the men's basketball program had already been caught red handed and penalized. one of the womens sports had also been caught violating ncaa rules. gene would have been well within his rights to come in and flat out clean house from top to bottom. even thad matta could have found himself on the chopping block for no other reason that he was brought in by the former regime.

but he didn't do that. he came in, evaluated the situation and made decisions not based on his own bias or what was necissarily in his best interest. but rather what was in the best interest of the kids and tOSU.

never forget what andy geiger did and honor him for it, as he rightly deserves. but don't discount what gene smith has done with a staff he didn't choose in a situation that was very difficult.

andy geiger put us on the path and created the vision. gene smith lead tOSU to success through another man's vision surrounded by persons not of his choosing. thats a tough road to travel no matter how you look at it.

As I said, Gene Smith is doing an excellent job and I don't discount what he has done one bit. However, I disagree with much of what you said otherwise.

First, when Smith arrived, the NCAA investigation had shown that there was no substance to Clarett's allegations and Smith would have known the outcome of the second investigation from the submitted documents and closed information that we cannot see.

Second, Matta was hired afterwards. He had absolutely nothing to do with any of this and there would have been no grounds whatsoever to fire him.

Third, there also was no evidence whatsoever linking Tressel to any of the shenanigans. Except for Clarett problems, and the Smith problem was a Clarett problem, the player arrests and other problems were almost exclusively the legacy of the Cooper and O'Brien era.

If Smith fired Matta and Tressel, who do you think would really have left Ohio State? Can you imagine the demonstrations and nonsense that would have erupted?

Finally, it was Tressel (first) and then Matta who restored the tradition of Ohio State sports. For the first time in a quarter century, Ohio State is playing for national championships, graduating players, and winning on all cylinders.

Coaches hired by Andy Geiger and players largely recruited during his tenure are responsible. They play in new and greatly refurbished arena/stadiums and train in facilities that were built under the adminstration of Andy Geiger. These facilities make a huge contribution to our ability to recruit the players that we are getting, as can be witnessed in all of the catch-up going on around us at TSUN, Minny, WV, etc.

I do not in any way wish to diminish the clean and professional administration of Ohio State sports under Gene Smith. However, Andy Geiger resigned his job because he knew that the ESPIN crap would not end until someone left and he had passed retirement age. He made the ultimate sacrifice for Ohio State and he deserves to remembered for his contribution and given credit for what players and coaches, who entered this program under his watch, are accomplishing.

Ohio State owes Andy Geiger that much and so does everyone at Ohio State today, including Gene Smith. I am willing to bet that Gene Smith would be the first person to tell us that.

hmmm... in noway shape and or form am i disputing ANYTHING i just quoted. geiger most certainly is 100% responsible for everything you listed. what geiger has done for tOSU is beyond words.

gene smith's success' is a little less noteable. but imo, difficult to achieve. "all" mr. smith had to do was not fuck up a good thing. from what ive seen in the working world, thats easier said than done. the natural response to coming into a position of power... is to use it. to make a mark, to define yourself in your knew role. when you add in all the bs that surrounded tOSU at the time, the desire and opportunity for change must have been even higher. im not saying thats the right thing to do. in fact, that was my biggest fear when geiger stepped down. you may recall several posts about jt's future with tOSU around that time. but he was able to see through the bs, see what geiger had built and had the humility to realize that massive changes weren't needed. to see that tOSU didn't need to be "saved". which is far more glamorous than keeping a ship on the course its already on and touching up the paint here and there.

im not compairing the two in anyway. nor am i trying to take anything at all away from what andy geiger has done. im simply trying to give a slightly different perspective to the "impact" (as it were) that smith has had.

Ohio State owes Andy Geiger that much and so does everyone at Ohio State today, including Gene Smith. I am willing to bet that Gene Smith would be the first person to tell us that.

im not saying that anyone other than smith would have come in and turned tOSU on its head. but the fact that gene smith WOULD say exactly that is a credit to him. there are a lot of people in positions of power who wouldn't say that. ive worked for several.

Andy has done and Gene is doing an excellent job as athletic director. They both deserve a lot of credit for Ohio State's current sucess in both football and basketball.

However, on the men's basketball side don't forget to thank Kathleen Salyers too.

After all of this (i. e. lawsuits and NCAA investigation) is said and done; we probably should thank Kathleen, for without her lawsuit:

1) O'Brien wouldn't have been fired.
2) We wouldn't have hired Thad Matta.
3) We wouldn't be getting what could be a top recruiting class in 2006. We are very optimistic that the recruiting classes for future years will be good too.
4) The future of the Ohio State men's basketball program hasn't looked this good since (maybe) the Lucas/Havlicek era.
5) In addition, I believe that we can now be 100% certain that we aren't knowingly violating any NCAA rules.

When Ohio State/Thad Matta wins the National Championship in the 2006/2007 or 2007/2008 season remember to say "thank you Kathleen".

Ohio State athletic director not just a football fan
Jim Naveau - 04.10.2007
[FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]When Gene Smith became Ohio State?s athletic director two years ago, he said one of the first things he wanted to do was learn the culture of Ohio State.
He got another lesson about that culture on Monday when media outlets around the state carried the story of a southeast Ohio man who named his newborn son Tressel Hayes in honor of Jim Tressel and Woody Hayes, making it six babies named for Tressel in Ohio since 2003.
?Probably the best way to describe it is passion. The Buckeye Nation has a passion for its university and its athletics,? Smith said on Monday before he spoke at an Ohio State scholarship dinner at the Shawnee Country Club.
?That (naming a baby for a football coach) has probably happened somewhere else and I didn?t know it. But that just demonstrates that the passion runs deep. That is a great example of how passionate people are,? he said.

OSU tops UK?

kentucky.com
Further evidence to applaud Mitch Barnhart's ability to hire a basketball coach who pleased UK fans (or further proof that not every coach jumps at the chance to lead Kentucky's program):

Ohio State Coach Thad Matta has a 30-day window in his contract to explore other options after the Big Ten Tournament. Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith said in March that if Kentucky Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart called, he would give Matta permission to talk.

But, Smith added, he believes the Ohio State job is better than Kentucky's.

"I know everyone would say, 'the rich Kentucky basketball tradition,'" Smith said in a story that appeared in the Akron Beacon-Journal. "I still think ours is a better job."
maybe i'm missing something. i don't see how this article or smith's comment is "evidence to applaud Mitch Barnhart's ability to hire a basketball coach who pleased UK fans." i do agree, though, with the author's statement that not all coaches jump at the chance to lead uk. this is obvious.

Smith's annual salary boosted to $600,000

Saturday, July 14, 2007 3:20 AM
By Bill Bush

Athletic director Gene Smith got a $150,000 raise yesterday when Ohio State's board of trustees increased his base salary to $600,000 a year.

"I'm excited about it," Smith said after the meeting. "I feel really blessed to be here."
The trustees didn't lengthen the contract, which is set to expire in 2012. Smith said talks about an extension would happen during the next year, "to give the new president a chance to get to know me."
