Attending an Ohio State football game is one the greatest experiences an Ohioan can have. Understanding the history and tradition that makes Ohio State football what it is today can only intensify an already thrilling experience. Here are what I feel are the ten best traditions that take place in Columbus on game day.
Buckeye leaves:
In 1968, Woody Hayes had a hand in redesigning the football uniforms. He included a round white decal with a green buckeye leaf on it for the helmets. A Buckeye player can earn those Buckeye leaves if they have a big play during a game, or show consistency while playing. It is not uncommon to see many leaves and not a lot of silver on the helmets. Watch the leaves multiply in number as the year goes on.
Team Walk:
Before every home game, the entire Ohio State team, dressed in suits and ties, make their way from the Blackwell Hotel to Ohio Stadium, fans crowded on both sides snapping pictures and cheering on their Buckeyes. First stop, however, is St. John Arena, the former basketball facility, for Skull Session, where the Ohio State Marching Band plays a sort of pep rally for the team and a crowd of 10,000 fans to get everyone pumped up for the game. Then, its game time.
TBDBITL:
The Best Damn Band In The Land. 225 members marching to the beat of "Across the Field" as they make their way down the ramp on onto the turf of Ohio Stadium. Ohio State is one of the few universities where the band members are not considered geeks, but they are some of the most popular students on campus. They participate in a number of great traditions on game day; including the incomparable Script Ohio, the dotting of the "I," Hang on Sloopy, Carmen Ohio and others.
Script Ohio:
Of all the traditions and festivities that are a part of an Ohio State football game, none will give you goose bumps more than Script Ohio. This is usually performed either before the game or at halftime. TBDBITL marches down the North Stadium ramp onto the field, and begin to play "Le Regiment." Exactly 16 measures after it starts, Script Ohio is complete. The drum major then meets the selected senior sousaphone player at the top of the last "O", and they march dramatically out to the top of the "I." It is one of the single greatest moments at any college football game.
Dotting the I:
A senior sousaphone player marches out to the top of the formation, does a big kick, turn, and bow (watching out for cameramen in the process), and the crowd goes wild. It is always a fourth or fifth year sousaphone player, but every once in a while, there is an honorary "I" dotter.
Block O:
Block O is Ohio State's largest student organization on campus. There are two special reserved sections of Ohio Stadium, North Block "O" and South Block "O," where students in this organization lead cheers, perform card stunts, and overall get everyone pumped up for game day. They are the loudest in the stadium and the ones who appreciate the thrill of Ohio State football almost as much as football players themselves. Join in on their cheers and just be loud and have a great time.
Carmen Ohio:
Carmen Ohio is the alma mater of Ohio State University, but it is a tradition because at the end of every game, win or lose, players and coaches line up in front of the band at the sound end of the stadium and sing Carmen Ohio. Fans stick around and sing along as well. It is a great way for the intensity of the game to be brought down to somber levels to honor THE Ohio State University.
Victory bell:
The classes of 1943, 1944 and 1945 didn't want to give any old class gift. They wanted to go big. And they did. Their gift to the university was a 2,420 pound bell that rings after every Ohio State victory. It is located 150-feet in the air in the Southeast Tower of the stadium, and can be heard up to five miles away on a good day.
Gold pants:
Starting in 1934, when first year coach Francis Schmidt made a comment about the Michigan team that "They put their pants on one leg at a time just like everybody else." His Buckeyes then went out and shutout Michigan four years in a row. Since then, a gold charm shaped like a pair of pants is given to each player and coach following a victory over Michigan.

Script - This is great. Thank you and to everyone who has been posting, it really is awesome for my research to hear so many cool stories and traditions from some of the legendary football schools in the country.

I visited The Ohio State University in November and was very impressed by the campus and the people. When it comes to graduate school down the line, an MBA from OSU is quite the tempting option.
