I think you are seriously misinformed!! Texas, like any other school, has always gone full contact in August. They have not gone full contact ones vs ones for extended periods of time. Do you seriously believe that UT, under Brown, had never gone full contact in August practice?? <snip> As I've stated before, the only time I can recall ever going live punt and kickoff team is when the scout team scrubs would not provide a proper look. That's just my limited experience. In punt team we would go live only in punt block situations. Even then, it was only to simulate game speed getting to the kicker. A coach would stand where the kickers foot would meet the ball, and we would try to get to the ball as the coach had it extended.
you are either 1) lacking in reading comprehension, or 2) contradicting yourself... at NO POINT did anyone state that Mack never goes full contact during August... what they said was the Mack does not go full cantact in Special Teams drills, which appears to be a mistake, given the Horns horrible kick coverage...

On kickoff team, only a few instances would we ever go live and it was few and far between. And our program "greatly emphasized" special teams play. To imply that Brown never goes full contact, is again laughable. Many of UT's practices in the past have been open to the public, and many can attest that what you were reading was more "coach speak" than anything else!!
so, either he goes live in August, or he doesn't... which is it? once again, for clarification, jwinslow was speaking of Special Teams, and you defended the Deense. just so you know, Defense and Special Teams are two different aspects of the game... you just stated that Mack does not go live on Special Teams drills, and therefore, by your own admission, Mack is ignoring 1/3 of the game...

I'm more concerned about our place kicking duties than anything else. Anyone would be concerned kicking to a return man like Ginn (no brainer!!)Contrary to popular belief, Special teams have not been poor under Brown, they just haven't been stellar.
well, i guess if you consider Steve Breaston's 250 kick return yards as 'not poor, but not stellar,' i will have to consider you to be a moron... i'm not sure how much football you have actually watched, but i'm pretty sure that on kick offs, the goal is NOT to allow the other team to set up at mid-field...

And yes, each team has issues getting to the QB. I think that is pretty well documented. I think that may be the downfall of either of these two teams. If we had one DE that could consistently provide strong pressure we'd be a helluva defensive unit. You guys are pretty much in the same boat. Although Kudla has all the measureables and Richardson has the build, neither of these two has shown that they can consistently put pressure on the qb. Each team pretty much has to send more than than the other team has blocking to get a great rush. That's why it will be important to stay out of obvious passing situations. And each team, whether you put much stock in our receivers or not, are more susceptible to the pass.
DE will not be an issue for us... i doubt it will be the deciding factor for the Horns either... but HORRENDOUS Special Teams play will be a factor...

Please do tell!! What games were the special teams so horrendous in? You've watched all these Texas games, please give me some examples other than Michigan. I'll give you one, against OKie St. they had two good returns. Now again, I implore you to name me any other games that our special teams were horrendous in? I'm the first to admit that they indeed need to be sound to beat you guys. You guys are acting as if every games was like the Rose Bowl. Again give me an example of how poor our special teams were???
Reading problem? Watch the games again.
You can have the most mechanically deficient golf swing on the planet and still hit the ball 300 yards down the fairway. Just like you can have 2 or 3 guys out of position on kick coverage and still have one guy make the tackle. Texas' special teams were bad all year, and were exposed against scUM, where they looked horrible. Expect the same on the 10th.

Look, I still think Texas could win this game. Your lines are amazing, VY is very talented (he can throw, not great but well enough), and your defense is solid. If Shipley is still ailing, I have more confidence defending your very green passing attack.

Your special teams have had issues covering kicks (both season and practice), and apparently punts (in practice). You have one guy to do kickoffs, FGs, and punts... which while he might be ok sounds to me like Texas is thin on kicking/punting talent.

It just seems to me that your special teams improvements appear to be failing to stop even your backup returners (two guys ran back a punt for a score during one practice report on InsideTexas). I think anyone outside of texas would believe that if your guys can score on returns, than Ginn surely can. And Brown refused to kick away from Breaston all game, so I can't see him refusing to punt to kick/punt to Ginn/Holmes either.

As for the non contact, Jreal, see post #2844. I got it straight from InsideTexas, your scout site. If they are off their rocker, that's fine, but hardly my fault.

UT's bad kickoff coverage games in 2004 (see post #2070)
Michigan - well documented
Kansas - Heaggans, Greg 4 returns 92 yards 45 yds (longest)
OkState - Elliott,Prentis 2 60 46... Jones,Robert 3 81 53 Amendola, Danny 2 51 30
Rice - Andray Downs 1 52 52
N Texas - Moore,Kevin 2 49 34

Who is this guy? I want to take lessons. When I swing it looks like I have no motor skills and/or I have 2 prosthetic limbs.

Actually, I'm not being fair to myself. I can drive the ball 300 yards, except it's 150 yards down the fairway then after a 90 degree turn due to my horrific slice it'll head another 150 yards into subdivision next door.

Are you clueless? I'm stating either way it's personal preference!!! Whether you go full contact or not has no bearing on whether your special teams excell or don't. Again I am speaking from my experience playing football. I have never played for the Univ of Texas!!!! As far as special teams are concerned, if you guys go nuts to the wall "live" to the ball in August on kickoff, good for you!!!

If you're satisfied with your pass rush, good for you!! I believe Texas still needs a dominant end to rush the passer. It would be nice if one of our starters stepped up, but we may have to use a specialists for passing downs.

Is it remarkable or what that with a few exceptions, we've actually continued a debate about one game for almost 3000 posts? I shudder at the thought of what the thread will look like next year. We may have to employ that split thread idea from recruiting (where one thread has news, and the other has news & comments) just to keep up.

jreal I went out of my way a few times to compliment your D even when I was being pretty heated in my distaste for Brown's approach to ST...
I have nooo problem with anyone calling out our coach for special teams. But some people get carried away with the shots on Brown. I was going to posts some Statistics for OSU kickoff return coverages, but I'm not too proficient at cut and paste. But there are always going to be games in which you give up long returns, but for the most part special teams were never as bad as the Michigan game.

I'm respectful of OSU and their talent level, and I believe you have a top notch coach as well. Is Brown the best X and O coach?? Hardly, but he is a great face for the program. He's surrounded himself with a great staff, and we're hoping it pays off in every aspect of the game.

I'll admit I was a little hostile...

This game is gonna be epic, and we appreciate your assistance in making recruiting easier for years to come after dozens of marquee recruits witness the inevitable
