Buckeyes eager to improve line play

Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel said of center Jim Cordle, shown above during this year's spring game: "I thought Jimmy played pretty well (against Youngstown State), but not like he's going to play in six weeks where he's been there every snap."
Fans should find out Saturday against Akron how much the weekly Jim Parker award means to Ohio State linemen.
In fact, it should be worth double.
The award is supposed to go to the top lineman of each game, but offensive coordinator Jim Bollman did not award it after a 38-6 win over Youngstown State in the season opener. Eight times the Buckeyes ran the ball inside the Penguins 5-yard line and five times they were stymied or lost yardage. Two of the other three carries were for touchdowns by Chris "Beanie" Wells and Brandon Saine.

OSU notebook: Tressel impressed by Cal, mum on Michigan

Almost every time he speaks, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel provides an example of why people consider him to have a future in politics.
He was asked yesterday if he was surprised the Buckeyes dropped in both major polls despite beating Youngstown State 38-6.
Tressel said it probably was the result more of what other teams did than how OSU looked, and used California as an example. He said he moved Cal up significantly in his USA Today coaches' poll ballot after its win over Tennessee.
"After one game in the season, who had an impressive performance?" Tressel said. "We had to move Cal up there, and we moved Cal up into the top 10. We probably had them in the teens somewhere (last week)."

Akron: Coaching sold itself to Brookhart
Rewards pay off already after risky career change

AKRON -- In the winter of 1994, J.D. Brookhart seemingly had everything a 30-year-old could want, including a car with all the accessories, a closet full of expensive executive threads and a growing bank account.
Brookhart had his sales pitch down pat in earning a salary well into six figures while peddling mechanical engineering software in Salt Lake City. He was climbing the corporate ladder two steps at a time and had the awards to show for it.

Walker won't play at OSU, but hopes work helps Zips
By JOSH HACHAT

AKRON -- Luke Walker might not be in Ohio Stadium on Saturday, but the Licking Valley graduate spent all week doing his best Ohio State impersonation.
Walker, a preferred walk-on at Akron, is part of the scout team this season in what will likely end up as a redshirt year.
He was informed late Thursday afternoon he wouldn't be on the traveling squad this year -- 65 players make the trip for road games, like Akron's Saturday against the No. 12 Buckeyes -- but Walker still had an important role.
He played the role of Ohio State's 6-foot-8, 345-pound left guard Steve Rehring all week in practice, hoping to give the Zips' defense an accurate gauge on part of OSU's massive front line.

It just might take Akron's big D-line a play or two to adjust to the size differential."I tried to give them the best look I can," said Walker, who is 6-0, 270. "It comes down to giving them a look, and giving them the best look we can."
Personally, I liked the rallying cry that inspired it even better.ORD_Buckeye;922323; said:At first I thought this was sad...

Then I started laughing because, at least subconsciously, they equate their school to a sky blue Ford Pinto.
Akron needs to trademark that, STAT.guy at zipsnation; said:...OSU is laughing so hard [at Michigan] that it pays no attention to the 1980 Ford Pinto that is coming at it and hits OSU.
We could be that Ford Pinto
BuckeyeNation27;922753; said:Why even write that article if the size differential is so huge? You hear all the time about the speedy WR who turns into the scout teams version of a scrambling QB....but a 6 foot 270 guy who "emulates" a 6'8" 345 pound guard?
A) Yeah....those numbers are close.
B) Who the hell cares....it's a GUARD!
