Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

We will expect the defense to hold teams to less than seven points per game and score at least one touchdown per game. Yeah, that's how we'll do it. Actually, we haven't a clue how the QBs will do. The practices are closed until the Spring Game. That's coming up at the end of March. So, have to check back around then. Until then expect never-ending posts about the heat down here. I'm surprised none of us have pulled out stuff about sabre-toothed armadillos, flying scorpions and the mysterious sewer snakes. :wink2:

Until then here's to a good time to be had by all.

I would be disappointed if we scored less than 24 there given all things...side bar, I spent 18 mos at Ft. Hood and can attest to the flying scorps, armed-dillos and the infamous storm drain snake, and not to mention the Texas oil slick drivers everytime it rains.....

top 5 of CFBNews.coms top 75 games of 2006:

5. Michigan at Ohio State, Nov. 18
Former Buckeye head man John Cooper was fired partly because he couldn’t beat Michigan. Wolverine head man Lloyd Carr has lost four of his last five battles with the Buckeyes.

4. LSU at Auburn, Sept. 16
Alabama will have something to say in the matter, but this will likely be for the SEC West title. The last two games between the two have been decided by a total of four points.

3. Oklahoma vs. Texas (in Dallas), Oct. 7
Oklahoma should be back to being Oklahoma, while Texas fans hope their team doesn’t go back to being Texas in this series. A loss by OU would get people talking about how the series made a dramatic turn.

2. Notre Dame at USC, Nov. 25
Notre Dame has lost its last two games at USC by a combined score of 85-23. Just imagine the hype if both teams are unbeaten. It might be better than the national championship.

1. Ohio State at Texas, Sept. 9
The classic between these two last year got overlooked as the season wore on because of the great USC-Notre Dame game, the amazing national title race, and the all-timer bowl season. Can this game do for Ohio State what it did last year for Texas? If not, this should launch the Longhorns to another huge year.

i acaully like both teems, but obviously i LOVE the bucks, and their Offense is 2 dominant, espes if every1 is healthy, which at week 2, they should be. i think our D wont be mindblowin, but itll do the job and we wiinnnn..35-21 or maybe if UT is lucky..35-28

Jammal Charles took 4th place in the 60m at the NCAA meet with a 6.67. He had a 6.65 in qualifying.

For comparison Michael Huff ran a 6.82 60m last year for the UT track team, and a 4.34 40 at the combine this year.

Lets resurrect this baby. 3 days of no posting is just too long. I know the rest of you have been checking to it to see if any new discussion has occured, but alas it has not, and hence you as well do not post, and we're all still stuck at 230. So thats where I come in. Back from long last, adding nothing of consequence it seems to the overall discourse, but hoping to jump start us all out of this rut and push on to our 5,000 post September goal. Dont think for a minute we can't do it.

-Ok, on a menial attempt at football discussion, Jamaal Charles is the best running back in the nation TODAY, but don't expect him to jump into next season against the Buckeyes or anyone else for that matter, and jump run all over everyone as the centerpiece of our offense ala Ricky Williams 1998. He's not that type of back and the game has changed even in those 8 years; there will be some growing pains relatively speaking in terms of taking his game to a level of consistent dominance week-in and week-out, because we will have to show something else from our QB and our O-cordinating that emphasize balance. JC could be good enough to handle the load himself, but he'd be infinitely more effective, as we would be successful overall, if he's used as a package to show teams we are more than just a ground game, which we are, and had better be committed to being, if we're going to be as good as we all hope to be.

This is based on inciting football discussion at the risk of slight exaggeration or hyperbole. Could I make a case to defend that statement as accurate? Sure. At the expense of saving time, I'll just lead with these few points:

1) The guy produced nearly 900 yards rushing (7.4 ypc) and 11 td's in limited and split time, while playing alongside a 1000+ yard QB who may have been the most prolific running quarterback in NCAA history.
2) Despite being injured and playing among some other very good backs last season, Jamaal was starting as a true freshman, and will only continue to get bigger, faster, stronger and more experienced as a player, and yet, as of right now, his measurables are phenomenal: 6'1, 190+ lbs, 4.3x 40, nation-leading prep 110 and 300 meter hurdle times that rival Teddy Ginn's record-setting HS times, as well as his 6.65 60 meter indoor time for the UT track team this year at the NCAA's (4th place finish) that has been documented. And finally.....
3) Aside from the numbers above, much like Vince Young's measurables and statistics, Jamaal has displayed a "footall player" quality and IQ that is ahead of his time as a classman, and evident whenever he takes the field. He possesses skills that make him effective in ways that guys like Ricky Williams or Cedric Benson didn't even seem to. Those guys were fabulous football players, but may have relied mostly on their physical attributes (i.e. power, quick feet, strength, etc) to make them great. Jamaal certainly posseses a little of all of those things, including his own unique quality of speed that those guys can't touch, but he is so much better than a back who is just very, very fast and can hold onto the ball. He possesses excellent vision, lateral quickness, acceleration, agility, forward momentum when cutting or going sideways (sounds contradictory I know, but he does it) suprising strength, and impressive recieivng skills.

Well, that was slightly more than "at the expense of saving time" would indicate, however, I hope my points are made nonetheless. For many who haven't gotten a chance to watch Texas outside of its biggest games, many may think Texas fans have the tendancy to sensationalize our players to an unfair extent in the attempt to feed our football egos, and I can't say thats entirely untrue for the masses. However, I personally feel, as do many other Texas fans, that Jamaal Charles is a special football player that breaks the mold, and has the potential to stand out even among other greats we've had here recently, and perhaps surpass them as players, much like Vince did. His "It" factor as a player shows his great instincts for the game, that anybody who watches can see, and his continuing devlopment as a player is exciting to watch.

Ok, I'm done for now. Lemme know what you guys think and I like to see some similar insights on studs Antonio Pittman and incoming frosh phenom Chris Wells. Should be fun.

campies i love your enthusiasm, and i too have been blown away by jamaal, but there is this junior just to the north of us from palestine, TX that may have a pretty decent arguement about being the best rb in the nation. I know that Charles said that his goal was to make texas fans forget about AD but really, at this point I think that I have to go with peterson. In no way, shape, or form do i view this as a shot at JC by the way, Peterson is just that damn good

He's not the clear cut number one by any strecth of the imagination.. AP is better IMO, and theres some damn good backs returning like slaton, irons, bush..even hart. Im not taking a shot a Charles but lets wait a few weeks and see if he's putting up numbers without vince.

EDIT: I didnt want to seem biased ... but I'd put Pittman on that list too

yeah, but JC isn't playing with Mr. Palestine's offensive line. Then again, AD's #s may be better this year, as JC will still be splitting time with Selvin, as well as others.

Campies, you have every right to be optimistic about JC, but I think you overstated his reputation as the best college RB. He needs to do more to earn that title. Besides AD, Steve Slaton, Kenny Irons, Michael Bush, off of the top of my head, will all have something to say about being the best running back in the nation.

Charles is a helluva back, but the defenses always had to worry about VY still having the ball on those shotgun-option-sweep thingy's UT ran seemingly every other play.

JC is a great running back, but he has a lot more to prove before he even enters the discussion. Absolutely nobody could focus on the RB with #10 threatening to keep the ball on the zone read play.

Just for the record, "shotgun-option-sweep thingy" should be "zone read play." :)
