This is based on inciting football discussion at the risk of slight exaggeration or hyperbole. Could I make a case to defend that statement as accurate? Sure. At the expense of saving time, I'll just lead with these few points:
1) The guy produced nearly 900 yards rushing (7.4 ypc) and 11 td's in limited and split time, while playing alongside a 1000+ yard QB who may have been the most prolific running quarterback in NCAA history.
2) Despite being injured and playing among some other very good backs last season, Jamaal was starting as a true freshman, and will only continue to get bigger, faster, stronger and more experienced as a player, and yet, as of right now, his measurables are phenomenal: 6'1, 190+ lbs, 4.3x 40, nation-leading prep 110 and 300 meter hurdle times that rival Teddy Ginn's record-setting HS times, as well as his 6.65 60 meter indoor time for the UT track team this year at the NCAA's (4th place finish) that has been documented. And finally.....
3) Aside from the numbers above, much like Vince Young's measurables and statistics, Jamaal has displayed a "footall player" quality and IQ that is ahead of his time as a classman, and evident whenever he takes the field. He possesses skills that make him effective in ways that guys like Ricky Williams or Cedric Benson didn't even seem to. Those guys were fabulous football players, but may have relied mostly on their physical attributes (i.e. power, quick feet, strength, etc) to make them great. Jamaal certainly posseses a little of all of those things, including his own unique quality of speed that those guys can't touch, but he is so much better than a back who is just very, very fast and can hold onto the ball. He possesses excellent vision, lateral quickness, acceleration, agility, forward momentum when cutting or going sideways (sounds contradictory I know, but he does it) suprising strength, and impressive recieivng skills.
Well, that was slightly more than "at the expense of saving time" would indicate, however, I hope my points are made nonetheless. For many who haven't gotten a chance to watch Texas outside of its biggest games, many may think Texas fans have the tendancy to sensationalize our players to an unfair extent in the attempt to feed our football egos, and I can't say thats entirely untrue for the masses. However, I personally feel, as do many other Texas fans, that Jamaal Charles is a special football player that breaks the mold, and has the potential to stand out even among other greats we've had here recently, and perhaps surpass them as players, much like Vince did. His "It" factor as a player shows his great instincts for the game, that anybody who watches can see, and his continuing devlopment as a player is exciting to watch.
Ok, I'm done for now. Lemme know what you guys think and I like to see some similar insights on studs Antonio Pittman and incoming frosh phenom Chris Wells. Should be fun.
