Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

The current situation with Tarell Brown really sucks! I was coming into this game cautiously optimistic, unlike last year. Last year I felt very similar to how Buckeyes feel this year, confident in my Quarterback.

Either way, I'm still pumped for this game but the scales have tipped further in the favor of OSU. If Teddy Ginn and Troy Smith, don't put up big numbers now, I would be completely shocked. We've got some young guys that will have to play big minutes, and they will certainly be exposed. Both Brandon Foster and Ryan Palmer give up height, speed, and experience to Ginn.

Last year we had veteran studs in the secondary and I was confident they could handle the Buckeye receivers. This year with the departure of Huff, Griffin, and now Brown things certainly look bleak. I'm now more interested in seeing how the young guys will step in and play. This tells you alot about the strength of your program. When you're forced to rely on your two's and three's on the depth chart. Still can't wait for Saturday.

I'm pretty disappointed to hear about the 2 arrests myself, even being a buckeye fan. It gives us another slight edge, but I just want to see a great game with both teams at full strength. I don't want to beat Texas because their starting CB and LB are suspended, I want our boys to go into Austin, and smoke the Longhorns at their full strength. Sorry to hear this as a college football fan, and good luck to both teams this weekend. Go

I doubt it. I know that you were kind of being tongue in cheek there, but Brown has played in a lot of big games in the past, and performed very well. You cannot simply reload, we're finding that out early on with our LB replacements. His replacement is very fast, but also very short. Plus, 40 speed doesn't equal game speed.......especially when you are trying to remember your assignment. The potential is there, but you can't put a value on experience.

Tarrell really hurt his career with this stupid mistake. Playing against Teddy Ginn would have been an excellent opportunity for him to prove himself as lock down corner.

Seems that it was 3 Horns past and present.
Gatewood is not listed on the 2-deep.

Two UT football players and a former Longhorn were arrested early Monday morning on misdemeanor possession of marijuana charges. Starting defensive back Tarell Lameek Brown, 21, defensive back Tyrell Antwain Gatewood, 21, and former starting linebacker Aaron Harris, 22, were arrested early Monday morning and booked into the Travis County Jail.
All three face charges of possession of two ounces or less of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor. Brown was additionally charged with a Class A misdemeanor of unlawfully carrying a weapon.
A police affidavit said an officer pulled over a white 2003 Mercury for swerving at about 2:45 a.m. Monday on 7700 North Interstate 35. Harris was driving the car, Brown was asleep in the backseat and Gatewood was asleep in the front seat.
Harris was suspect of driving while intoxicated but passed the field sobriety tests.
The affidavit states Brown had a 9 mm handgun in his lap, which led to the additional charge. He was released from jail Monday afternoon after posting bond.
Harris was the starting linebacker for the Longhorns last year. He has not been magistrated yet and remains in custody.

The Sporting News had Brown ranked in the top five at the cornerback position nationally. He was the co-recipient of the most consistent defensive player award as given by the University of Texas.
This is a blow for Texas, especially with top-ranked Ohio State coming to Austin this weekend in a top five showdown. No word yet on whether Brown and Gatewood will be benched on Saturday.

I agree, guys......let's talk football, we as OSU fans don't have much room to talk when it comes to embarassing off the field problems over the past few years. We can debate the significance of the potential suspension, but lets not use it as an opportunity to bash the Texas football program.

I agree as well. It's never a good thing to see kids possibly ruin their opportunities at not just football success, but educational success...Keeping the discussion to just the on-the-field football repercussions of this situation will show a level of respect I think most of us have for both the great Texas friends/posters we have here and for the Texas program. If tOSU fans have learned nothing else from our own controversies, they should have at least learned that these things happen everywhere, no matter how immune you may think we are.

Wasn't it Brown that said he'd prove that he was the best DB in the country this year ?? Not gonna even have that chance now. I did some stupid crap in school but then again I wasn't on a full athletic scholarship with the possibility of making big money in a years time.

from statesman.com...

Austin lawyer Jamie Balagia is representing both Tarell Brown and Tyrell Gatewood, the Longhorn football players who were arrested early Monday with ex-Texas player Aaron Harris on drugs and weapons charges.
He told the American-Statesman Monday that both his clients were drug tested — at their request — to prove that the small amount of marijuana that led to their arrest was not theirs.
“All in all, it was a weird set of circumstances,” Balagia said. “When the facts come out, this will be resolved pretty quickly.”
According to the arrest affidavit, Brown was arrested after deputies pulled over Harris in a traffic stop on Interstate 35 North just before 3 a.m. Brown was asleep in the back seat. Deputies saw a gun in his lap, and banged on the windows of the car to wake him. Balagia said the weapon was a “recreational gun” Gatewood had purchased two weeks ago for target practice. The report said it was a loaded 9 mm handgun. Balagia said that Brown had found the gun on the floorboard of the backseat and picked it up.
Texas Coach Mack Brown released a statement Monday.
“We are aware of the situation with Tarell (Brown) and Tyrell (Gatewood) and have met with both of them,” Brown said. “We’re working closely with the young men and the authorities. At this time, we are holding them out of all team functions as we gather as much information as possible before making a team decision.”
Tarell Brown and Gatewood were released from Travis County Jail about noon today, seven hours after they were arrested on misdemeanor marijuana charges. Brown was also charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon. They were released on a personal bond. Harris was released around 4 p.m., according to Balagia.
