Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

How do you expect anyone to take what you say with any seriousness at all when you say that Texas has an edge at every single position over OSU except QB.

Lemme ask you something: If VY had returned this year, at what positions or units would you say that tOSU has an advantadge over the Horns at?

Aside from maybe special teams, I'd guess you'd probably say wide recievers, possibly linebackers, and maybe a push at running backs. Well, our team is that same team, minus VY this year, and so while thats huge, we'll probably have all the same position by position advantadges that we had otherwise. Now the key is obviously, even though other positions on our offense may have an edge on your guys, your offense will undoubtably run better and probably more effectively given that huge loss in the driver's seat for us, and the huge plus you guys have in yours.

All that aside though, whats wrong with saying we have a majority of position advantages over you guys? You'd still come play the game and expect to win even if VY was still here even if you were arguably outmanned at most spots on the field, so why would you not now given that huge hole for us? The fact is, I'm speaking relatively here, and you're really not that outmanned as talented, top flights players you have in the wings go, and the fact that we have such a gaping hole at that QB spot now is something that really makes this thing a lot more interesting. I'd expect nothing less than the effort the Bucks gave in Columbus to get a win, and I can only hope that we match that effort ourselves.

This is how I see it:

QB-Huge advantage OSU
RB-Same but maybe slight advantage to Texas
WR-Decent advantage OSU
TE-Advantage OSU
OL-Slight advantage Texas
DL-Same
LB-Advantage Texas(OSU does have a ton of talent and depth, but they need to prove it on the field)
DB-Slight advantage Texas

A thought for all of you stat freaks:

A British general once said the following:

"There are three types of lies:
LIES.
BLOODY LIES.
AND STATISTICS."

Using statistics to justify an argument is flawed. It removes all the intangibles from the discussion and tries to quantify what is inherently unmeasurable, IMO.

In order of "who hurts most to lose", not necessarily "rank the players who we lost" (i.e. Tony Hills taking over for Jon Scott does not hurt much, if at all), here goes:

1. Vince

big separation

<KEEP going>

keep going

<ALMOST there>

almost there!

<MADE it!>

2. David Thomas
3. Wright (Okam, Lokey and Roy Miller are all very good, but we're not that deep at DT)
4. Michael Huff (M. Griffin is taking over at SS, not a dropoff. However Marcus Griffin is taking over for his brother Michael at FS, which is a dropoff, so maybe I should put this at 2)
5. Harris (we loved him, but I don't see how one of Bobino/Killebrew/Kindle will be a dropoff)
6. Ced Griffin (Aaron Ross will step right in and perform just as well)
7. Ahmard Hall
8. Larry Dibbles
9. Richmond McGee (kickers and punters should be just fine)
10. Brian Carter

Oops, forgot Will Allen. Put him at 4 and move everyone else down a spot. He was a solid, experienced lineman, but his loss won't hurt too bad given our depth.

So yeah, while "we return everyone else" was probably not the best thing to say, we really aren't "hurt" at any other position. Does that make any sense?
<BIG separation></BIG>

Your Texas Longhorn returning Leading rushers.
J. Charles-119 for 878
R. Taylor-76 for 513
S. Young-96 for 461
H. Melton-87 for 432

First off there's Great Depth here, very great depth... but Antonio Pittman is returning with 1,350 yards I don't see those kind of numbers anywhere so claiming you have a better running back is a weak arguement. Oh yeah not to mention you had this guy named VINCE YOUNG who drew attention last year. We'll see how good those backs are when the defenses can tee off on your running game. Last time I checked only 1 Tailback is on the field for Texas at all times and Antonio Pittman has individually crushed all 4 of your backs. IMO at best Texas has the best dept with us having Pittman/Wells/Haw/ And CWellswhich isn't bad... We have the best individula, you have the best depth but again you can't put all your backs on the field.

By the way who's throwing the ball to those recievers who have better stats than ours?? If you think that your new Qb can buy time and scramble around like Vince and avoid mistakes like Vince you'll be very disappointed. So your recievers stats at this point and time mean nothing. Do they have the potential to be better than our recievers yes they do and they could be better provided your new QB gets the job done.

Throwing your offensive stats against ours is a pointless thing to do considering A) Vince Young is gone , B) Taylor could be missing , and C) Vince Young is gone

You could state this "Texas HAD a better offense than Ohio State LAST YEAR". Even on that note (which I agree Texas WAS better) you could argue Texas played inferrior competition. Not to mention they had a great system and a great QB who changes the way Defenses approach the games. The problem with your offense last year was this "do we stop Vince and let everyone go crazy" or "Do we stop the others and contain VY" Both options just were impossible to do.. this year though is different.

So why don't you throw a little more respect our way, we recognize your talent but to say you're better across the board is just stupid. Oh and I don't even wanna explain why Ginn is better than anyone

Ginn's average and return TD's were down because teams kicked away from him, kicked shorter, higher punts with more hangtime, and because he fumbled a few punts that resulted in negative yardage. He still had three kick/punt returns for TD last year and two called back for inconsequential penalties.

SO my advantages are like this

QB- Big OSU
TB- very close but Texas (depth)
OL- Draw
Wr- Decent OSU

DL-Texas
LB-OSU
Db's- Draw

both teams are very talented and I see it chalking up to be maybe a better matchup than last years. I think the Teams are bit more even this year.

You folks are misunderstanding a little. I was saying, we have the same team next year as we would have had had Vince decided to return. Obviously we would have lost Huff, Wright, etc regardless, however, it seems some of the perception is that our team next year with Vince would have been a shoe-in to repeat, etc, and that includes having possibly better unit by units than every team we would face, not just QB. Now that Vince is gone, it seems people are minimizing the significance of all those other very strong areas, and in some cases, forgetting them. My point is that we have that same team, just without Vince. Thats a big 'just without,' but our other areas are just as strong, if not stronger, than last year.

I guess you can make an argument for the draw at OL and potentially the linebackers (tough one but you could make it), but how in the hell do you say that our secondary is a draw with yours? I realize you have guys that got significant minutes the last year or so, and they're very talented, but you do realize we return 2 senior starting corners, senior starting FS, and talented, experienced depth (like yours), but with only 1 position to fill instead of 3? Help me out.

Does everyone really think that OSU has a linebacker advantage? Carpenter out last year was really painful to watch. AJ is awesome, and I'll miss the Hawk, but we need 2 solid guys like Bobby and AJ. I don't see that this year, but I may be wrong.

I consider our defensive weaker than UT and other top teams for the first time in years. Our offense should be able to make up, but we need to D to step up in a big way.

With Vince gone however, a huge hole is on the field. Vince may not be the smartest cookie, but he was brilliant on the field and can run and play the QB run game better than anyone. You could see it from the moment he stepped on the field Frosh year that he was something special.

OSU is going to win in Austin, it won't be easy, but they should have won this year also. If OSU D can mature quickly, I see no reason why we can't pull out a win. UT lost its key play on offense, but we lost 2 key players that helped contain opponents QB's and RB's.

Just my opine.
