Just ask M*ch*g*n.

I'll start with the easy one. Brandon Mitchell = Matt Melton, A 5th year backup who would never break a lineup with decent starters
At the other safety Nick Patterson = Ishie Oduegwu, bith promising sophs.
We don't have any walkon corners on our depth chart but I'll be generous a say Antonio Smith = Erick Jackson
For a promising sophomore corner I'll go with Malcolm Jenkins = Ryan Palmer
We don't have any transfers from Baylor at linebacker so I'll be nice and say John Kerr = Scott Derry
At MLB I'll go with James Laurinaitas = Jeremy Campbell
And last but not least I'll be real generous Marcus Freeman = Robert Killebrew (last year), they were rated about the same.

Now, now...let's be fair to xraypansy. He was only referring to the defense in that post. He said we had one projected first-rounder, and we only had three defenders taken in the top 18 picks. He wasn't that far off. :slappy:

Since you mentioned Rivals, A.J. was actually tOSU's 4th highest LB recruit in the class of 2002. Stan White, Jr. was a 4-start LB recruit in Rivals (Scout listed him as a TE). :wink2:

Thanks for the correction. I felt like there was someone missing.

Also, Texas and Ohio State are two of the eight schools to have all of their recruits qualify this year. How bout that?

I agree the star system is an imperfect science. Some Texas notables...

Michael Huff = 3* (Thorpe award winner and 1st round draft pick)
Rashad Bobino = 2* (current starter)
Vincent Young = 5* (shoulda been 10* ;-])

Don't you think you are throwing the baby out with the bathwater?

While you miss on some that can't miss, and hit on those that no one has heard of I think the rating are becoming more and more accurate over time. Most of the highest rated recruiting class on the star system are the best teams. There are exceptions, but in general I believe that is true. Don't you?

I would say there is no science to it at all.
I would say there are organizations out there profiteering off of the talents of High School kids, and to make more profit they have to come up with some sort of way to evaluate one kid against another.
I would say that there is more to a football player than his 40 time
I would say that a lot of "recruiting gurus" know how to break down film as well as my 4 year old son
I would say that there are some people that they get right because even a blind squirrel finds a nut.
I would say, also, that star ratings change quite frequently and often have to do more with who commits early than any real talent evaluation.
I would say, pound for pound, star ratings are complete rubbish.

Anyone could look at VY and know the kid could play. It takes a well seasoned coach to look at a player like Hawk and see that HE can play too. I'm not saying Mack can't find the diamond in the rough, don't get me wrong, just picking some examples off the top of my head.
