Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

The Buckeye h8ters are just as vocal as the Buckeye fans in Central Ohio, and there are millions of them. You cannot go anywhere in the state and not run into an Ohio born Michigan or Notre Dame fan, so do not underestimate them. The evening of a loss to Michigan is awful, because they crawl out of the woodwork. The build up to the Fiesta Bowl made me nauseous as well.

I wasn't aware of that, but it makes sense.

But I think the point is, people don't notice a lot of homerism when it's directed at their team (i.e. local media), but they are very aware of and sensitive to homerism when they move or travel and hear it being directed at another team. Every sports fan in the history of the universe is guilty of it.

I'm in the process of auctioning some items to raise money for this site. The only item that doesn't have a bid yet is a Texas-tOSU game program from 2005. It's in very good condition (since it wasn't in my hands during the last 3 minutes of the game). The back cover has autographs of Troy Smith, Doug Datish, and Quinn Pitcock.

Anyway, if any tOSU or Texas fans are interested, please PM me with a minimum bid of $25. The high bid as of noon on Monday will be the winner.

Here's a link to the post with a picture of both front and back covers of the program.

Couple of quick points

1.) Texas fans and team are no more cocky than any other big time college program...tOSU included
2.) You are really digging for something with this replay quote. We show every play on replay....I only took this quote to mean that Griffen is excited to see what will be the Largest HD Scoreboard in the nation....and who the hell cares if that isn't what he meant...WE PLAY NORTH TEXAS THAT FIRST GAME. For god sakes I hope we get to see more than a couple of highlights otherwise we are in for a long season.
3.) You live in the Heart of Longhorn country, did you expect to have more Buck fans around you? I don't want to come off too harsh here(after all you did go out of your way to say some nice things about EH and I in an earlier post) but you sound surprised that we have a passionate fan base. I can only assume that if I were to turn on local sports talk in Columbus that things would be equally filled with homer-ism....Maybe more since we have all these damn sooners and aggy here

High Lonesome,

I think more than a few people would dispute your first point. UT is known far and wide for having some of the most arrogant, obnoxious and fickle fans on the planet. all the talk from Mack Brown and others in recent years imploring UT fans not to leave games early when UT is getting beat proves the quality of many UT fans nicely.

but you missed the point of my whole post. I wasn't commenting on arrogant Horn fans. I'm not surprised to find UT has a large fan base here in Texas, or that their fans are (when UT is winning) very passionate.

my point is that the Horn PLAYERS seem to be quite full of themselves. rather than commenting on their missing MVP and offensive SuperHero the players interviewed in the posted article seem quite full of themselves, and very, very confident (to say the least). maybe other teams are just as arrogant, but I sure haven't seen Troy Smith & Company talking that way.

so again I say, if you got points for arrogance the Horns would already be up on the Buckeyes by about 500 points.

Last year, Carpenter was grilled, albeit somewhat unfairly, for his comments about Heisman candidates against tOSU.

While maybe you have read some quotes that seem arrogant or confident, you are talking about players coming off of a undefeated NC season, reading articles about how UT can't do it without Vince, etc. I am glad to see that they are confident. I have also seen a lot of quotes from UT players where they say that they don't care about the Rose Bowl victory anymore, for example, Drew Kelson who gave all of his Rose Bowl gear, etc. to his mom and told her he didn't want to see it anymore.

I don't think any of the quotes you have posted seem that arrogant. Would you want your players second guessing the team in the media because they don't have Salley, Whittner, Hawk, Carpenter, etc.? I don't really know what else you expect them to say. These guys talking, Robison, Griffin, and Brown, are leaders of the defense, they can't make quotes stating that they are worried about the loss of Vince, or Huff. They have to take this confident stance. Saying they won't be intimidated, or that they have a chip on their shoulder because the coaches dropped their team to #2 because of one offensive player, when they are defensive players themselves, doesn't seem all that arrogant to me.

"That doesn't make any sense"

Ha. Thanks for the Burgundy correction. I think what I meant to say was "Having never played like 2005 in previous years, with comparable or better talent in all of them, a talent disparity was never one of the reasons we failed to perform the same."

One of my optimistic thoughts after Texas won the NC, was that Mack and GD really feel that a monkey is off of their back, and realized that UT has won so many games, not only because of Vince the athlete/person, but because they let him loosen up the team, and they opened it up a lot more.

Sorry, but you won a lot of your games in 2004 and 2005 solely because of Young...both Rose Bowls were won by Young's ability to ad lib and make plays on his own, and no because of some great wide-open offensive scheme.

The change from having a Vince Young to having two zero-snaps-experience freshman QBs is immeasureable...

exactly. They're not gonna say "holy crap, Vince is gone. We're so screwed"

I don't know, maybe he could have been more diplomatic. But I don't see a problem with it.

I know this isn't what you meant to talk about, so I apologize. But the anal retentive part of me wants to respond.

Once again, I think you just described every fan base in the country. Leaving when your team is getting blown out? Which school has fans that don't do that? I don't, but that's because I'm equal parts masochist and stubborn, but that's beside the point.

And I really don't recall Mack Brown imploring fans not to leave early. There was one comment last year from one of our players. He was kind of disappointed that fans were leaving when we were up 66-7 in the third quarter against Kansas. Can't think of anything else though.

Dallas Buck

I disagree with you about almost everything you posted except for the Fickle part. This is one of the most annoying parts of being a Horn fan to me. What you are wrong about is the fans leaving when we are being blown out. Horn fans are no more guilty of this than any other fan base. Actually its quite the opposite...Horn fans are guilty of leaving when we are blowing the other team out...We also tend to have a somewhat quiet fan base.

As far as being known
far and wide for having some of the most arrogant, obnoxious
...
fans on the planet
Well then I would have to question your sources. I don't think that it is all that unfair to say that the vast majority of people on this board had very little opinion one way or the other about Texas fans. Now in Dallas I have no doubt what-so-ever that every Sooner/Aggy/LSU/ generic college football fan you come across says that. It comes with the territory.

I agree with you to a point, but if they would have continued to run an offense that they did pre-VY, then UT would not have won the NC last year, and Vince would not have been put in as many "ad lib" situations. Also, if UT would not have had VY last year, than UT would not have won the NC last year.

The point of my post was to respond to the post that asked about Greg Davis, etc. and to state that I hope that Mack & Co. don't revert to the old guard, of two hand offs, then a three yard out, or wide receiver screen. (The zone-read was pretty much installed for Vince, so that's why I am combining the two factors.) Mack and Greg used to appear to be timid to using Roy Williams as he should have been used. I am hoping that the last year and a half showed them that it might be more successful to tailor their offensive play calling to their players' talents, and not the other way around.

The change from having a Vince Young to having two zero-snaps-experience freshman QBs is immeasureable...

I don't think that I have ever posted on here with misguided optimism, or homerism about our QB situation, and rarely even downplay the change from Vince to a non-expereinced QB, so I don't understand why you borought up the QB experience factor in this reply, as I was clearly responding to a question about my thoughts on Greg Davis' play calling. Are you stating that UT should go back to a conservative offense because they have untested QBs? Or are you saying that they cannot pull off a more wide open offense with an untested QB? or something else?

I don't know if this is what he is refering to but one of the First things that Mack did when he got here was to encourage the fans to "Come Early, Be Loud, and Stay late" surely you have seen these shirts around campus....anyway We do have a very fickle fan base but much of that comes from what Aggy would call t-shirt fans

Edit: i feel that I should also point out that much of our "fickleness" comes from the fact that we support our Athletic department very well and demand results....much of our talking is done with a checkbook and visual displays of dissatisfaction

Wholeheartedly agree. My point was to counter your point that it wasn't "just Young" that won some games...probably would've been better to say not to expect anything close to the same results this season sans Young.

The system indeed allowed Young to improvise, but without his talent his improvisations wouldn't have been much.

what the heck do you expect? OSU lost NINE starters, yet most players feel they will still be a good defense. How is that different than UT players believing in their ability to overcome the loss of VY?

If I'm JT, I don't want a defender who thinks they can't overcome the challenges ahead of them this season. Same thing for Mack Brown, and offensive players moving on without VY.
so again I say, if you got points for arrogance the Horns would already be up on the Buckeyes by about 500 points.
posts like this do nothing but bring down the discourse on this site.

Wrong. If the QB screws up, it hurts the entire offense and depending upon the degree of the screw-up it could be disasterous. Conversely, if anyone one of our "nine new" defensive guys screws up, if they play isn't in the area of the screw-up, the screw-up doesn't hurt. The play of the QB affects the offense far more than any one player on defense affects the defense.

beat me to it. i was going to add that when one guy on defense screws up, it takes an experienced QB to take advantage and get the ball where it needs to go. A green QB will not be able to recognize as many of these opportunities as an experienced one could.

That's what I thought at first, but that was pretty clearly a slogan meant to get a disgruntled fan base (rightfully so, I might add) excited again. It certainly wasn't a plea to prevent people from leaving early. Of course you know that, but maybe not non-UT fans.

Beanie and Sergio are (no surprise) included on a list of 10 impact freshmen from SI.com.

edit - Jevan Snead is in that list, also.

si.com

Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State

t1_wells.jpg

Ohio St. QB Troy Smith says that freshman Chris Wells (above) reminds him of a young Jerome Bettis.

High school: Akron (Ohio) Garfield

It didn't take long for Wells to make his presence felt at Ohio State. During the Buckeyes' Scarlet and Gray game, the freshman pounded his chest before taking a handoff, broke a tackle and barreled his way to a 11-yard gain.

"That was to let them know I was coming," Wells told the Columbus Dispatch.

It was a notice that incumbent Antonio Pittman may want to heed as well.

While Pittman, who ran for 1,331 yards last season, is the starter, he'll no doubt get a push from Wells (6-1, 220), who brings a mix of speed, size and balance that will add much-needed depth to the backfield.

"It's been a few years since we've had that depth and luxury at tailback," Ohio State recruiting coordinator John Peterson said. "We're excited to have Wells and [Maurice] Wells right there in the thick of the tailback competition."

The third-ranked player in the Rivals100 and the recruiting service's top-ranked running back, Wells ran for 2,134 yards and 28 touchdowns last season and was named Ohio's Mr. Football. And if this bruiser's high-school exploits weren't enough, the comparisons to other players are sure to get Buckeyes fans salivating. Quarterback Troy Smith has likened him to a young Jerome Bettis, while running backs coach Dick Tressel says Wells reminds him of a Jim Brown.

"Chris is big I-back, [a] downhill runner," Peterson said. "He's the kind of player that has a relentless motor and likes to go north and south and get positive yards."

With Pittman nursing his injury, Wells was given the opportunity to take center stage in the spring game and didn't disappoint, running for 48 yards on 11 carries. He also caught a pass two yards behind the line and bowled over a pair of defenders en route to a 9-yard gain.

Sergio Kindle, LB, Texas

High school: Dallas (Texas) Woodrow Wilson
As if the Longhorns defense isn't going to be nasty enough, how about adding the Big 12's preseason newcomer of the year to the mix?

Kindle, who did a little bit of everything at Woodrow Wilson, including running for 2,298 yards and 40 touchdowns and registering 157 tackles his senior year, will only add to an already frightening linebacking corps that Lindy's ranks as the ninth-best in the country.

Kindle (6-3, 225) can play both outside linebacker spots, but is expected to backup Robert Kilgore at strongside.

"Sergio is a big, athletic and talented young linebacker who fits right into the mold of the guys we like to have at that position," Mack Brown said.

"He's fortunate in that he was able to watch, learn and work with some more experienced players in the spring and will not be forced into action right away this fall."

The Parade All-America and recipient of the AFL Ironman award, which is given to the nation's best two-way player, is fifth on the Rivals100 and its highest-rated linebacker. He was also the only player in Texas to earn all-state honors on both sides of the ball.

With his mix of height, weight and 4.56 40-yard dash speed, Kindle is already drawing comparisons to former Longhorn and current Kansas City Chief Derrick Johnson.

"He's the best I've ever seen," Kindle's high school coach Bobby Estes told the San Antonio Express-News.

Kindle was held out of the spring game because a dropped class left him below athletic eligibility, but Brown says the situation has been remedied and it should have no further effect on his standing.

Jevan Snead, QB, Texas

High school: Stephenville (Texas)

How do you replace Vince Young? Well, you don't, but coach Mack Brown will likely be using a rotation of Snead and redshirt freshman Colt McCoy to lead the Longhorns offense in their bid for a repeat national title.

"Both of our young quarterbacks did a great job in the spring," Brown said. "I would say that Colt and Jevan exceeded our expectations in how they picked up everything, and they are guys that can make plays with their arm and with their feet. We're looking forward to see their continued progress this fall."

In Snead, the Longhorns got the fourth-rated dual-threat quarterback by Rivals.com and the 78th-ranked prospect nationally. Snead is most often compared to former Utah and current San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, and has been known to dissect video of Smith. Snead threw for 3,546 yards and 38 touchdowns last season, while running for 766 yards and 23 scores. The 6-3, 205-pound Parade All-America finished his prep career with a 23-2 record as a starter.

Originally headed to Florida, Snead withdrew an oral commitment because he believed the Gators were only recruiting one quarterback this season.
McCoy may have the inside track on the starting job because he's been on campus longer, but Snead is already familiar with the spread offense, having run a version of it at Stephenville High.

"What we ran offensively and what Texas has run looks fairly similar," Snead's high school coach Chad Morris said. "I think with our spread offense, and with us throwing the ball 28 to 30 times a game, he's been able to see different types of defensive coverages, different types of looks."
With just a few weeks to digest the Longhorns' playbook, Snead went 9-for-13 for 97 yards and a touchdown in the Orange and White game.
