Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

You'd like to hope so, wouldn't you....

Fact is, Colt could very well be better than a backup 5th year senior, or ...

Fact is you're the one with the "you'd like to hope" scenario goin' big time. No one knows what those kids will do in the game until they've done something. Not you, not Mack, not Tressel, not even the player himself.

Colt may be VY, Joe Montana, Troy Aikman and Tom Brady rolled into one from day one and game one.

on the other hand...

it's fine to say he's doing well in practice (what a nightmare if he wasn't even do that) but trying to extrapolate that to the second game of the season, in front of a huge crowd and a national TV audience playing the #1 team in the nation is a big stretch. a very big stretch.

it's okay though. I expect that the much needed dose of realism at the QB position for Horn fans will be served up that evening by a bunch of guys in scarlett and gray ...

I've heard he's 240, but he looks 220 or 230, as it is solid muscle on his nearly 6-6 frame. I watched him a couple times go 1 on 1 against the DEs, and he did OK. He doesn't have the strength to stop a big rusher cleanly, but did a good job redirecting them, and he is fast enough that they can't get around him.

I think we had an arguement a while ago about this:

There is no way JerMichael Finley is over 220 lbs.

Im looking at him on TV right now and there is no way in hell.

Ok, that was a little much, but I was thinking more of Brees in his early college years.

Speaking of Brees, he went to my children's high school in Austin. At this school, they have two ninth grade teams, two JV teams, and one varsity team. A neighbor reminded me that Brees was the QB on the B team as a ninth grader. Obviously, he progressed beyond that point. I have never gotten a clear explanation about why UT didn't recruit him harder. Evidently, they didn't think he was good enough, LOL.

I think we had an arguement a while ago about this:

I was thinking, man, I must have missed this argument recently. But then I saw the quote was from April.

I don't know how much he weighs, but it has been over 4 months since then. And the dude is 6'6". And I have no idea why Greg Davis would tell people he's 240lbs when he's not. Maybe Greg is going by the major college football weights and measures standard instead of ASTM, i.e. adding 2 inches and 20 pounds. UT is as guilty of that as any other school.

But the point is, he's
1) gaining weight
2) should probably gain more to be a top tight end
3) only a freshman
4) good at catching the football

Which is why we're excited about him.

As I said in my rep to you, posts like this are why you're head-and-shoulders over all our "visiting" members.

Fact is, Colt could very well be better than a backup 5th year senior, or a younger guy who had taken snaps last year had we had one, have beaten him out in the spring, and we'd still basically be starting with a QB who'd never taken a snap, but by most objective standards, we'd be starting the better guy.
I don't know, in Mack's past, he unseated Applewhite for Simms at one point, and there is debate about who was the better College QB, and whether he was just pressured into playing the recruit who was a better prospect out of high school.

If Nordgren were a fifth year senior this year, and Colt was a redshirt freshman, I think that we would still see the QBs alternating at the beginning of the year.

The posts regarding Colt's first practice from xray are very optimistic on this board and mirror several of the opinions on hornfans. But many of the responses on this board are very realistic, as there is no way to tell how either one of these kids is going to respond to tOSU's defense and schemes once September 9th rolls around.

As much as I want to see UT continue their unbeaten streak, and as much as I am against alternating QBs, I am beginning to think that the best thing about playing tOSU the second week of the season, is that UT may establish a clearcut No. 1 for the rest of the season after that game. For example, look at how Troy Smith (not that Snead or McCoy can be compared to Troy at this point, but for reference) completely took over the reigns last year, and answered any possible lingering doubts between him and Zwick, and how much love and respect he is gaining from the media this offseason. While I think that we will lose several key players after this next year, I can live with having Colt or Jevan taking over the team this next year, with a loss to tOSU, and leading us into the next three and a half years.

That's the silver lining of this whole QB mess, that both QBs are battling for the starting position, and that whoever comes out on top will have three full years of eligibility after this year.

Should Texas lose the game but in the process find its QB, it could be the best thing for the team in that it could help them run the rest of the board and thus have a potential rubber game with Ohio State for the national title.

See I'm really not. Nobody expects the freshmen to be anything other than freshmen, and in spite of that, we'd have a great chance to compete given our defense, skill positions, cohesion, and home field assuming they didn't totally self-destruct. It has been said over and over that the key to this game will be QB play, and an above-average effort by our guys, on a good night with the other weapons we have, could spell disaster for the Bucks. I'm not presumming that's more likely than not, but I am saying there's good evidence to be cautiously optimistic. Think of it as Pascal's wager for football: If we're wrong in our claim of Colt, and he does play freshmen-like, we've lost nothing, as that is what's expected of him by the media and you guys. We'd be on the same place in our unbelief in the QB, but still believe in our team's chance to win based on the defense, skill positions, home field, etc, assuming he didn't totally blow it. If however we are right, and Colt is God (jk, merely "good"), then we've likely won, and you've likely lost. A lot of your belief that you can win is based on the disbelief that our QB's will be exceptionally good. From your side of it,though, part of our belief in winning is based on your defense playing "freshmen-like" i.e. inexperienced. The wager applies the same way for you, except, in this sense, I believe its much more likely that a talented, polished freshmen plays above his head with his team behind him, than a talented, hugely-green defense trying to play as a unit, on the road. I dont know, thats just me and my orange goggles talking though.

Texas media guide based on weigh-ins and such, has him at 236 lbs. Thats what he claims in recent reports as well. And at 6'5 (not sure he's 6'6 yet), thats a solid-ass frame thats probably only going to continue to build lean mass. May not look it, but I dont see it as that much of a stretch. Greggor's probably just rounding it off and thinking ahead with 240. Close enough.

I guess my Scarlet and Gray glasses equivalent would say that a redshirt, live-snap-less freshman playing Quarterback of all positions will have a rougher time than a young but somewhat deceivingly experienced defense, but that's just me. It really could go either way. Each side (McCoy and our D, I mean) has talent.

Not trying to flame here but....you can be sure of one thing...Texas will be as focused as they have ever been in this game (doesn't mean that they win). Ohio State has every reason to be confident but don't ver look the fact that Texas is still ranked #2 in the country and that IS with a Freshman QB that nobody has seen....all of this means they must have something else that puts them up ther so high.

Ohio State should come in to this game with a bit of caution (not saying that they won't) and make sure they are not too over confident. If they are it could make for a long day.

I honestly feel like Texas inexperience at QB and the loss of Ohio States 9 defensive starters kind of balance each other out.

But make no mistake, Texas will be ready.

When I read things like:

"I expect that the much needed dose of realism at the QB position for Horn fans will be served up that evening by a bunch of guys in scarlett and gray ..."

It makes me think that there could also be a dose of realism due the Buckeyes.

Offense wins games, Defense wins Championships...and the Texas defense will be stellar this year.
