Game Thread Game Six: Ohio State 35, Michigan State 24 (final)

Troy Smith was FINALLY allowed to throw Zwick passing plays (the 5-7 yard quick hitters). Yet when troy does it it's bad defense, and when Zwick does it its great vision. Smith had a lot of great deep balls today, and intermediate passes.

We will agree to disagree, look at the routes for goodness sake, he has all the opps in the world that zwick does, bu Zwick makes the plays IMO.

Again, if TS is the best QB for us to win then great, but In my own opinion he is not.

jim lachey's not to hot on him either, but he comments on how Zwick throws a stone (b/c it doesn't spiral) which is hard to catch (ie Texas game would seem to support that).

Watching the game develop from the stands, I saw a lot of times where Troy waited a long time, and was right to do so, b/c the routes took a long time to develop. He needs to look back and forth more often, but on most of those 10+ yard completions, had he thrown it any sooner it wouldn't have been there.

Pleeease tell me you guys saw AJ Hawk totally destroy a WR in bump and run coverage about 8 yards down the field. If that wasn't on TV, I'm going to be extremely disappointed. The WR ran upfield 8 yards and encountered AJ, who promptly flattened him. Ball was not in the air, so it was a legal pancake-n-run coverage. :)
---------------

If this were 2002, we would talk about the resolve of this team, and their ability to keep fighting and just win. Now that its 2005 and our expectations are thru the roof, this win was 'ugly.' It sure involved ugly elements, but our boys battled hard and got it done today.

Now I can finally stop reading all of the "did any of you really expect troy to lead us to the game winning drive?" dribble. I expected it against PSU, and a big hit ended that drive. I would not recommend Troy to any pro scouts, but I'm sure as heck gonna support him while he's a buckeye.

If you didn't see leadership today, then I guess you never will. And as for the emotional leader part, he was the guy that got everyone pumped up during one of the midfield rah-rah mosh pits.

Pittman got 18 carries today. That is more like it. The boy runs the ball well.

Ok Grad says I need to provide ideas for how to fix the problem. Here goes

When in the I.........it is assume that we're gonna run, and they stop us. Line up in the I, and throw the ball, play action, 1st down.

Also, is it just me or do we run most of our routes to the sidelines? Need to attack the middle of the field. Getting a tight end involved would be nice for that.

Defense, shaky in pass coverage, but as always they stepped up when needed. Woulda forced a huge turnover at the end there, if the ref hadnt screwed us. All worked out.

Smith definitely stares down the receivers.......I just wish I could watch down field and see the routes, because it seems like they are rather bland, and nobody is open. Cant make that assumption without actually seeing it though.

Good win, but we got alot of work to do.

Smith has no business staring down receivers. However, MSU's coverage held up for longer each play than I expected, they were sticking with the routes. Tressel seemed to save anything non-predictable for after the first few drives. If we run more playaction, screens, and such it will help everything else out. agreed that there is much to be improved.

Great post. I agree about PA out of the I but not about the pass coverage. We made some choices today to get pressure on Stanton...he was very good early on and the DBs were at a severe disadvantage.

As for Smith, JWins, I have to disagree. TS is still not reading very well and MSU took away the running lanes and made him rely on his eyes and arm. He was lost at times...did you notice Stanton making plays on the scramble? He kept his eyes upfield...

I don't think he's reading well, but I think this was a lot better than the posts I had read on here. I saw Troy try and make a play to Pittman while scrambling but #25 decided to take a break on the sideline right as troy was going to throw him a pass up the sideline.

I think he is doing well enough out there for us to win. I am not satistfied with his performance as a coach by any means, but as a fan I will take it.

One thing that bugged me is we did not seem to adjust well to their shifts. When we got pressure on the QB, we stopped the pass. However, their shifts left them with tons of lanes and options on offense. They are very talented and have a great style of attack, so I do not expect to stop them a lot. But I thought some of their overloads created mismatches that left other areas exposed, which a great QB like Stanton will overcome.

What I thought was incredible was how Stanton felt the pressure and NEVER coughed up the ball despite getting smacked around constantly, often right around the time of his delivery. I may be forgetting one, but I do not remember that many dangerous passes (the late game popup missed by kudla went thru the WR's arms).

I definitely agree, Stanton was a great QB, Smith was average. However I think today was a big step up.

Agreed buiIpower:

Muffed-booger/Danielson is a crew that has done ok by us in the past (Holy Buckeye), but today was a bit weird.

Danielson talked about how "tired the Buckeye defense is getting", but the real story that he missed was how tired the MSU o-line was getting. After a day full of holding (no where near as bad as the psu game, just big10 standard holding), they were freaking exhausted. They were going up against a line that had 8 guys rotated in/out all day. They had no hope of containing our pass rush on the last 3 drives. There was even obvious holding on plays where stanton was sacked.

My only gripe today is that I wish we wouldn't wait until the second half to start playing football. We keep spotting the opposition points and then trying to come back. Let's have a sense of urgency at the beginning of the game and get after it.

On the flip side, we outscored them 21-7 in the 2nd half. Way to make the adjustments, coaching staff.

You know the gametime assessments are always sharper than reality...

I'm not sure I can agree that he is doing well enough for us to win...I really have doubts based on his recent performance.

I'm not saying yank him, play JZ or TB, but I am saying my confidence in him is not high.

Not tryin to take anything away from the D. I mean you have to look at the MSU offense and just say, wow. Stanton is one hell of a QB. Wish we had him. They did hold alot, but we still got great pressure, especially in the second half.

That game next week is not going to be easy. Dont think that's the same Indiana team that we're used to running over.
