Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

Compare what you guys did to Northwestern and what we did to them and that should give you an idea of why most around here are giving you a snowballs chance in hell at winning. We're not going to just sit back and go "oh you might win" because nobody here really believes that. This doesn't mean we don't respect your team, it just means we as Buckeye fans feel your team is outclassed in this particular match up and we aren't going to hide that opinion for the sake of hospitality. Yeah, a lot of us are homers but are you that surprised to find some of those on a website for tOSU?
Your win against a pretty good Maryland team was the biggest win in your programs history but for the Buckeyes it would've just been another Saturday. Believe it or not we take being compared to Maryland as an insult. Sorry, just the way things are. Doesn't mean we expect your fans or players to genuflect in the face of tOSU but it does show the difference in perspective. The fact is that whether or not you want to accept it the Huskies are going to be playing a step up from anywhere else you've seen.

The year we beat them they lost 3 games. Northern Illinois, Florida State, and their bowl game.

Oh yeah real sucky.
There you go again, thinking Maryland is anywhere near what Ohio State is. The ACC before Miami and VT arrived was horrible. The conference was FSU and then everybody else and Maryland got pounded by FSU, the only legitimate good team in the league at the time. You've never faced a great team. In relation to OSU, Maryland does suck. The fact that they lost to a mac team proves that they're just a wannabe program. You don't see the real big boys lose to crappy mac teams. BTW, how's ticket sales going? I hear you losers couldn't even come close to selling your measley 3500 tickets and now OSU fans are buying up your tickets. Boy, that's got to be embarassing.

Guys.......whats the point of talking shit to a NIU fan? This guy is confident that his team will give the Buckeyes a game, I believe this too. If you don't, refer back a couple of years to the Marshall game. Anything can happen in college football, and the MAC programs are much stronger than years past.

Do I think that NIU will win........obviously I'd be an idiot to think that way. I envision this one being tighter than most anticipate, OSU will take some time to get rolling.......especially defensively. In the end, I'm pretty confident that our guys will win this one pretty comfortably.

Back to the bulletin board stuff, you can't expect a player to come out and say that they plan on losing to OSU. Keep in mind, this team is picked to win the MAC.

As for the Maryland stuff..........who gives a shit? They've had a good year or two, but were comparing apples to oranges here fellas. Petty arguments like this are clear evidence that the season needs to start asap.

Thanks for that OSUBuckeye4Life.

As for 2003 win over Maryland, Maryland was a good team and finished in the top 15 of most power ratings. One should note the circumstances of the OT win. Even the NIU coach was completely confused, well after the game had finished. Well done to NIU, they beat a good team.

Here is the recap of NIU-Maryland...

After missing field goal, NIU wins in OT

DEKALB, Ill. (AP) -- The ball bounced off the leg of a defender, fluttered into the air and landed softly in the hands of a surprised Randee Drew -- a fitting ending to a wild upset.

Northern Illinois stunned No. 14 Maryland 20-13 in overtime on Thursday night, a victory capped when Drew intercepted Scott McBrien's long pass near the end zone.

The pass, intended for Latrez Harrison, hit defensive back Rob Lee in the leg as he fell backward and shot into the air.

Waiting underneath to grab it was Drew.

"Everything was in slow motion," Drew said. "One of them fell and kicked the ball and it came right to me. I guess (they) just put me in the right spot at the right time."

It took the Huskies a moment to realize what had happened. When they did, the entire team rushed the field to celebrate only their third win ever over a ranked team.

Even after the game, coach Joe Novak was still confused.
"Could somebody tell me what happened?" Novak said. "All I know is everyone said we won, so I was going to go along with it."

Northern Illinois got the ball first in overtime and scored three plays later when Josh Haldi threw a 20-yard touchdown to Dan Sheldon. Sheldon caught Haldi's pass at the 15, spun around a defender and raced into the end zone for the game-winning score.

Haldi was 21-for-35 for 266 yards and two TDs.

Northern Illinois had a chance to win the game in regulation but Steve Azar's 43-yard field goal attempt was partially blocked by Madieu Williams with 1.3 seconds left.

The attempt was set up by a roughing the passer call on D'Qwell Jackson, one of several costly penalties against the Terrapins.

Maryland is the highest-ranked opponent Northern Illinois has ever beaten. The Huskies defeated No. 20 Bowling Green last year, and knocked off No. 24 Fresno State in 1990.

Wow, talk about much ado about not so much. Oh well, I guess when there are still 3 weeks left in the season, people need to fill time somehow.

I'm sure NOIL thinks they're going to waltz in and stick it to us, and our boys think they're going to waltz in and get the ass-kicking of a lifetime. As was pointed out about 50 pages ago, nothing is going to change anyone's mind except the scoreboard at the end of the game.

I can't imagine why people think Ohio State fans are arrogant
Becasue we think we're going to beat a vastly inferior team with 1/1000th the traditon and history of OSU? If we were saying this about beating Texas then I would agree, but were talking about directional school university. In college football, if you have a direction in your name(unless your name is Southern Cal) you're a nobody.

Yes, that's completely why. It has nothing to do with quotes like these:

No doubt. Just issue the beatdown already so everybody in country can see what they want, #1 vs. #2.

No it couldn't because Maryland sucks. Don't ever bring up Maryland in this discussion again. They are light years away from ever being what Ohio State is and there is NO correlation between playing a wannabe big time BCS team like them and playing a big time BCS team like us.

Really seems like all you were saying was you "think" we're going to beat them.

Yes, that's completely why. It has nothing to do with quotes like these:
What did I say that wasn't true?
We're going to win and should do so handily.
The nation does want to see #1 vs. #2 for the first time in the regular season in 10 years.
Maryland is an average team and compared to OSU isn't very good.
We are vastly superior to niu in all categories.
Our tradition and history is many, many times over better and more significant than niu.
Outside of USC, what other directional school has done anything significant in the history of college football?
I apologize if me speaking the truth makes it seems arrogant.

My mistake. No arrogance there.

I'm so confused...

So, if NIU beat Md in 03, and Md in 03 was pretty good, going 10 - 3 and a bowl and all that... what does it mean that the 04 squad beat NIU, but ended up going 5 - 6 and failing to qualify for a bowl...
In 2004 it was in Maryland and our starting QB got hurt on the 3rd play of the game, and Wolfe wasn't even the starter yet.

So considering we had our backup QB and RB playing, I would say we gave a pretty good effort.
