Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

No I complain when I bring up Wolfe's and Pittman's stats vs. Michigan, but they are discredited because Michigan/Ohio State is a rivalry, and NIU/Michigan is not.

Then is when I start complaining.
Is that how we determine who the better RB is? how that RB did against a similar opponent once in their lives?

I think Wolfe is a talented RB, I've said that MANY times. That said, he has not been tested at all by strong defenses in recent years, and I see no way you can argue otherwise. As such, I want to see how he does when he comes to columbus... which will be a rebuilt defense but still from the banner school for rush defense.
You are 100% correct. He has never faced a defense the caliber of the one he is going to face September 2nd. I think he'll be fine, you guys think you will shut him down. You are Ohio State fans, I am an NIU fan, of course it is going to be like that. I think we should just agree to disagree.

Again

So I can't compare the two because one plays in the Big Ten and one plays in the MAC?

Wolfe has put up better numbers in his college career, and better numbers against common opponents.
*sigh*

let's try this again.

Comparing the 2 runningbacks based off of how they each did ON SEPERATE TEAMS against the same opponent ON DIFFERENT DAYS of the season is about as worthless a comparison that you can make.

I never said you guys would stack the box, but in the Akron game the were constanly bringing 9 guys into the box. That is how they stopped Wolfe on the ground, but they still couldn't stop him through the air.

I'm not worried about our O-Line. When somebody leaves, somebody else fills right in for them. There is a reason we had an 1,000 yard rusher 7 years in a row.

And, we are not worried about our D-Line. When somebody leaves, usually to the pros, somebody else fills right in for them. There is a reason we have had a defense that has given up less than 100 rushing yards per game in 3 of the last 4 years (73, 130, 62, 78) That's going backwards to 2002. The serious football people here respect Wolfe, respect NIU. We also are confident that our "new" defenders are up to the task. On September 2, we will find out.

I guess the interesting thing here is we'll never know who the better back is. T. Sutton is a perfect example of a great back in the right system - I doubt he would have been nearly as successful at tOSU.

Wolfe likely fits into the same category as Sutton. He's in a system that works very well for him. The same is true of Pittman. If you magically switched their teams, I wouldn't be surprised to see both teams' running games diminish a little (or a lot)

So there is no way to determine who is really better. Last I checked, it doesn't really matter since they'll never be on the field at the same time.

No I complain when I bring up Wolfe's and Pittman's stats vs. Michigan, but they are discredited because Michigan/Ohio State is a rivalry, and NIU/Michigan is not.

Then is when I start complaining.

There is a reason why American sports fans, year after year, vote the Ohio State-Michigan game as the number one rivalry in sports. There is a reason why theY voted it the #1 rivalry in sports of the 21st century, not football, sports.

With all due respect, Wolfe has not played in that kind of game, BECAUSE NIU HAS NO SUCH RIVAL, and it is perfectly reasonable to conclude that Michigan played Pittman one heck of a lot tougher on the day.

Two other things to consider.

It also is reasonable to conclude that Michigan played a lot tougher in their last day than their first game.

Like all Big Ten teams, we will probably be trying out the 2's, rotating people in positions, and trying to not show too much before our next big game, in this case Texas. Nevertheless, if Wolfe gets some numbers late in the game against them, do you think NIU homers will be going wild about Wolfe's performance on the day?

You are Ohio State fans, I am an NIU fan, of course it is going to be like that. I think we should just agree to disagree.

Yes, we are fans of opposing teams, but being a fan doesn't mean you throw all objectivity to the wind. I watched NIU - Michigan last year. Bo Schembechler was in the booth going wild at how bad the defensive performance was, at the line and by the linebackers. It takes a lot for him to go off on national TV about his beloved wolverweenies.

Lots of posters have said that we are happy to have a good first game. We'd like to see our guys get a bit of a rev. We don't need to talk about our offense or defense. We all know what's coming.

Now, before you go there, it wasn't because of Wolfe, it was because of the new defense, and Bo was going off about how bad they were through their fourth game.
