Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

You have a point, BN27, but you may have slightly overstated it here. By this standard, no two players could ever be compared to one another at all, unless they're teammates.
That's not what I'm saying at all. There are plenty of ways to compare players. Using their performance against the same team on different days is just not a good way.

WTF??

So how else are you supposed to compare players from different conferences playing a common opponent?

Have you watched the kid play?
This seriously isn't that hard to understand Thump.

Samkon Gado runs for 200 yards against the KC Chiefs on Febtober 32nd.
Ladanian Tomlinson runs for 90 against the KC Chiefs on Smarch 33rd.

Samkon Gado is now better than Ladanian Tomlinson?

You're right. Any serious comparison of Wolfe and Pittman would require, at minimum, having watched substantial game footage on both players. A criterion that I don't meet, nor I suspect does G-Force (correct me if I'm wrong). Having conceded your point, I'll change the subject slightly and say that I take G-Force's argument to this extent: Wolfe's record of production, including against some opponents of substantially superior talent to NIU's, convinces me that he's a legitimate threat to the Buckeye defense, and it wouldn't shock me if he made some plays and put up some respectable numbers next September in the Shoe.

I don't doubt Wolfe is a very good RB....I just like punching holes in arguments. Just stating that he has 8 billion yards against shitty teams or that he performed better than Pittman against Michigan isn't going to do it for me, but I wouldn't be entirely shocked if he went over 100 against us.

So how do you compare the players then? Just because one plays for a Big10 team he's automatically better?

I'm guessing you're in the same boat as me and have never seen this guy play so it's all conjecture.

Rivals Radio had a NIU preview this morning (Sirius). They talked a lot about Wolfe, and interviewed him. Seemed very squared away. They asked him if he had thought about going pro after last year, and he said he had done the paperwork for the NFL review, and they told him he'd probably be a late 5th early 6th round choice. He decided to come back to NIU for his last season. Said something about shoulder surgery, which I didn't quite catch. Also mentioned that both QBs were still in competion for the starting job. He seemed really excited about playing at scUM and OSU stadiums - loves the big game atmosphere. Said his best games last year were v. Miami and Akron, where he was in "the groove".

I've never seen him play (afaik), but should be interesting to watch. Maybe a good test for our D early on. With the QB situation, could be harder to prepare for, as they apparently have different strenghts.

You can listen to the NIU preview here:

Should include the interview.

Try not to put words in my mouth.

For the last time, all I am saying is comparing 2 players soley on how they did against 1 common apponent at different times during the year is a terrible way to go about it.

It doesn't get any more simple than that. I figured my example was good enough, but I guess Thump will be easy to fleece in fantasy football.

I compared their season's, but peopel discredited that because we play in the MAC. So then I went to common opponents, and you are discrediting that.

I'm not arguing your point. But what information would you use to compare two players who aren't on the same team? Or, in this case, aren't even in the same conference?

I wouldn't know the best way to compare RBs....it's all subjective. What I do know is that just using 1 game against common opponents is stupid.

Have I said that yet? I'm not sure. :smash:

If you listen to the entire show and go to the 2 hour 22 minute mark, they replay an interview with Wolfe they had back in April.

They take alittle about Ohio State.

Rushing Yards by individual players (starting RBs) against Ohio State in 2005:

CAR YDS AVG TD LG
Miami, OH Brandon Murphy 15 48 3.2 0 9
Texas Jamaal Charles 10 26 2.6 0 12
San Diego St Lynell Hamilton 7 10 1.4 0 5
Iowa Albert Young 10 25 2.5 0 6
Penn State Tony Hunt 16 64 4.0 0 25
Michigan State Javon Ringer 16 76 4.8 0 16
Indiana Chris Taylor 10 18 1.8 0 6
Minnesota Laurence Maroney 25 127 5.1 1 53
Illinois Pierre Thomas Jr. 9 28 3.1 0 12
Northwestern Tyrell Sutton 14 93 6.6 0 34
Michigan Mike Hart 9 15 1.7 0 4
Notre Dame Darius Walker 16 90 5.6 3 20

Conclusions I can make from this chart:

1) Indiana's Chris Taylor is a better RB than Mike Hart.
2) Not only would Jamaal Charles not start for 3/4 of the Big Ten, he wouldn't be able to start at Miami Ohio either.
3) The two most explosive rushing offenses OSU faced last season were Northwestern and Notre Dame.

/sarcasm

I'll agree with BN27 on this one.
