To be fair, the Viper wasn't simply 'spiking the football.' He was attempting to obtain a confession and one in which Tywin Lannister would be implicated. I would consider it similar to kneeling the ball at the 1 yard-line to run time off the clock and set up the game-winning field goal rather than scoring a touchdown. Good idea until the field goal gets blocked.

So, did the Mountain die, too?

Non-spoilerish hints clearly depicted or spoken on screen during Season 4:

- Oberyn studied poisons at The Citadel
- Oberyn's squire was shown wiping down the spears with a cloth prior to the duel

Other things shown on the series which probably just confirm what you already think, without me flat telling you what happens in the later text:

- The defrocked ex-maester Qyburn is now with the Lannisters and is trusted over Maester Pycelle by both Cersei and Jaime, he did likely save Jaime's arm if not his life.
- In a land where divine intervention, wights, zombies, dragons, and warging are things, don't assume anyone is dead until you see their head separated from their torso, the corpse burned, and the ashes scattered.

I won't be clicking on the second one, but the first one
That makes sense as to why he was puzzled/concerned about the Mountain dying "already". Obviously a man who is that handy with a spear would know what's a kill shot and what's not.
I love how they put stuff like that in there for us to go back and watch for after the fact. Like Joffery being killed. Going back and watching, you can see her take the crystal out of Sansa's necklace and at what moment she used to slip it into the drink.

@Dryden as a book reader I knew his fate, but I will still commemorate him a little while longer. His anguished screams on the other hand, that was hard to stomach even knowing it was going to occur.
