I'm a hundred pages or so from finally finishing book 5. I took over a year off because I found book 4 so tedious thanks to the deluge of new characters. I seriously hope that 2/3rds of the characters that have been introduced are killed off by a massive natural disaster or something.

It would help focus the story on the only thing that I care about (the north) and speed up the release of the final books.

Martin needlessly threw up dozens of competing story lines in books 4 and 5 and now I strongly suspect he doesn't know what to do with them which is why the final books are getting delayed so much.
