Martin needlessly threw up dozens of competing story lines in books 4 and 5 and now I strongly suspect he doesn't know what to do with them which is why the final books are getting delayed so much.
The popular opinion I've seen is that he knows exactly how he wants it to end and books 4/5 were about getting everyone into position, which is pretty much the only reason why I think he'll beat the series if TWoW is out by 2015.

Sometimes I wonder if he regrets scrapping his original plan to make it a trilogy, especially now with a mainstream audience on his ass.

That sounds more like the hopes of fans than anything based on what happens in books 4 and 5.

I think the more likely scenario is that when he realized the books were getting extremely popular he stretched out the middle with some extra books by introducing dozens of new characters and story lines.

Although he may have an idea of how he wants to end the Stark storyline, I highly doubt he has any clue what to do with the dozens of loose ends he has created for himself.

Like I said, I think he should just kill off everyone south and east of Kings Landing with a massive valcano Volantis style and wrap things up at Winterfell and the wall in a few hundred pages.

The remaining major plot points are done, he's already told them to HBO. He stretched the story thin for whatever reason, but I don't see what significant loose ends he won't be able to tie in what will likely be 2000+ pages. Look at all of the shit that happened between CoK and SoS.

I just can't see a scenario where everything can be wrapped up in a meaningful and satisfying way. Maybe I'm preparing myself for the worst, but didn't people who were fans of 'Lost' think that series was going to reach some awesome reveal all conclusion only to realize they were just making shit up as they went and had to scramble to put together a terrible, unsatisfying ending?

I get a similar vibe here; I will be pleasantly surprised if I'm wrong.

And let me say also that I do enjoy the books and the television series- I just think the story arcs are far from perfect.

Judging a story arc a little more than 2/3 of the way thru the story arc seems premature to say the least.

He's made a few comments about stories like Lost and actually mentioned Lost by name where he said he thought that kinda shit was unacceptable. He's a real asshole if he's just trolling folks. He really seems to genuinely give a shit what his fans think as well.

I'm judging all the little mini story arcs in books 4 and 5 that I don't give a shit about.

If those don't have some meaningful payoff on the way to the main Stark arc conclusion than what is the point of introducing them in the first place other than to make a few more books and a few more dollars?

I think he also said he was originally going to skip ahead 5 years in the story. Evidently he eventually felt he couldn't adequately fill the reader in on what happened in bits of dialogue like he originally planned, so he felt he had to flesh it all out in those two books.

The books have been pretty damned good at trope subversion to date. I think, like 513 is saying, that they're all pieces that need to be in place. The war for the dawn can't be a lone bastard who discovered his true lineage in time to save the world. The same is true for Dany and her wmd's and Stannis the true king. There's gotta be more than that.

Yeah what happened was he realized he either had to make everything quiet down for half a decade or tell five yrs of stories thru flashbacks. Both of which he didn't want to do.

One week from tomorrow! Fuck yeah!

First six episode titles have been released. No spoilers here. There's a spoilerific thread in the RR for anyone that didn't know.

If you haven't read the books, I'm greatly interested in hearing your thoughts on each episode and any and all predictions going forward.
