Game Thread Game Five: Penn State 17, Ohio State 10 (Final)

All losses are painful. But for me also, the losses to JoePa hurt less than the others. He's been a class act for 40 years.

I will also join in rooting for Penn State to slaughter scUM next week.

My point was that our offense helped make PSU's defense look a lot better than it really is.

They seem to have a knack for that particular trick.

USF, UC, Minny and NU all put up more total offense against that same defense than we did tonight.

I hear you, Jax. I think they're better than some are willing to give credit for, but in the end the Tressel-ball stuff works better against some teams than it does others, and it didn't seem to match up with Penn State well tonight. I would have rather they tried going downfield and lost by 21 than playcalling like they were ahead and losing by 7...at least then they would have been trying to get the ball downfield more than they seemed to. Once that ball bounced past Ginn and died at the 11, the game was basically over.

I'm not trying to be negative but.....

Every coach since the 1940s (Paul Brown) has been fired from Ohio State. Will this consistenly shitty offense and subsequent stubborness to do anything about it be JT's ultimate downfall?

If it continues to appear that he is unwilling to do anything different and the results stay the same the attacks will begin, guaranteed.

Throw in the underwhelming road game results under JT's regime and you have the 3 basic points that the anti-JT faction will base their argument on.

I hope for all our sakes he makes some meaningful changes on the offensive side of the ball. He's a great coach and I want him to stay.

everyone talks about "going downfield". Every try it in madden? It gets picked off a lot, especially when facing good defenders. I think they nullified everything we tried to do.

I think an OC would help, especially b/c we wouldn't have to waste timeouts so often for delays of game, and we could check at the line more.

Can everybody at least say PSU played a hell of a game?

Before we pull a dozen scholarships and and fire the entire coaching staff, can we at least recognize what PSU did tonight? I know we lost. Blame the coaches, blame the players, blame the on road at night after a bye week once every blue moon curse, whatever. Those guys flat out wanted it more than our guys did tonight. No mistakes, capitilize on every opportunity and play outstanding defensive football. They did exactly what we did in 2002. I'm not putting my life savings down on them vs. USC/Tejas in the Rose Bowl but still, they impressed me tonight. I hope those fuckers let it go to their heads and choke against scUM, Minny or UW and give us a shot at the Big 10 title but they beat us and put themselves in the driver's seat, that gets my respect.

If I was a PSU fan I'd even drunker and more incoherent than I am right now, running down their version of High Street thumping my chest screaming like a fucking neanderthal. Enjoy it while it lasts and see you in c-bus next year.:oh: :io:

IIRC, Paul Brown was NOT fired. He was drafted into the military and went on to coach the Great Lakes Naval Academy (or whatever it was called). After the war, I think he wanted to come back to OSU, but they wouldn't get rid of his replacement(s) to bring him back, so he eventually took the new Cleveland job in the AAFC.

When I say "go downfield" I mean 8-20 yards...and some of those, make that several of them, were open today. Whether that was the coach or the QB, I don't know, but we should not be playing the Bellisari offense...QB runs a lot, try a deep ball once in a GREAT while, and dump off to the TE. Just my opinion.

yes i have said this

this is penn state's year, they are back in the hunt for the national championship, maybe not this year, but in the next two years they will figure in the whole BCS mess, i'm scared for the next two years or so with those freshmen they have, you think they are great now, what do you think they will be in 2 years, mark this down, PSU will win the Big Ten title and might go undefeated this year

Some people will never acknowledge the other team played better (notice this is different than IS better) because it's the nature of being a fan. That, and a lot of bad blood towards PSU, and the reaction is about what it always is with this game. They played well, we didn't play well enough, and whover is better on paper doesn't really matter. We have the advantage at home next year, and I expect we'll use it to its fullest. Until then, off to prepare for the MSU preview, another tough game, to be sure.

PSU Defense total yards allowed

USF 297
UC 360
CMU 172
NU 427
Minnesota 287
OSU 190something

THAT seems ok to anyone here?

Different year, different game, diffrent players same old shit...not asking for USC's offense but just an average one would be fucking nice.

Come on know Jax, there are so many factors that go into each game. If you look at our games against SDSU, Miami, and Iowa. If we don't put in backups in the fourth quarter our total d would probably be around first in the nation.

I don't if you missed out on the fact that we were throwing down the field, run alittle trickaration(reverse to Ginn, put Ginn in the backfield), the rain, the 108,000 screamin lunatics, We lost our starting right tackle which caused for a lot of pressure on our qb, and we didnt have our first backup(Rehring), and most of all that helluva a defense that PSU put on the field.

I don't know if it is me, but your true colors always seem to come out after a loss.

Just give PSU credit they played a helluva game and move on. We have a game next week and the sun will rise tomm.
