IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - The toughest part of Ohio State's schedule is behind the Buckeyes.
And Troy Smith and Co. handled it with ease.
Smith threw for 186 yards and four touchdowns and No. 1 Ohio State picked up its second road win over a ranked opponent by manhandling No. 13 Iowa 38-17 Saturday night.
The Buckeyes (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) faced three ranked teams in September - Texas, Penn State and the Hawkeyes - and beat them all by at least 17 points. Ohio State, which extended the nation's longest winning streak to 12 games, won't face another team currently ranked until their season finale against Michigan Nov. 18.
Iowa (4-1, 1-1) fell to 0-10-1 against No. 1 teams.
Ohio State broke open a 21-10 game with long scoring drives on its first two possessions of the second half. Anthony Gonzalez gave the Buckeyes an 18-point lead by weaving through traffic for a spectacular 30-yard TD grab, and Aaron Pettrey capped a 14-play drive with a 36-yard field goal that gave Ohio State a 31-10 lead.
The Hawkeyes pulled within 31-17 in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard TD pass from Drew Tate on fourth down. But Ohio State forced a fumble and two interception on Iowa's next three possessions. Smith put Iowa's comeback hopes to rest with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Brian Robiskie.
Antonio Pittman and Chris Wells combined for 55 yards rushing on a 12-play, 89-yard scoring drive late in the second quarter. Smith capped it with a 6-yard strike to seldom-used senior Roy Hall.

Iowa got as close as 14-10 on a 15-yard touchdown run by Albert Young. The Buckeyes moved ahead 14-3 by capitalizing on an interception by Brandon Mitchell, who returned it to the Iowa 30. Pittman followed a 23-yard rush with a 4-yard TD run.
Ohio State scored on the game's opening possession, marching 53 yards in just 2:24. Smith, who finished 16-of-25 passing, found Gonzalez for a 12-yard TD pass to give the Buckeyes a 7-0 lead.
Drew Tate finished 19-of-41 for 249 yards and three interceptions for Iowa. Ohio State turned both of Tate's picks into touchdowns.
Pittman rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown.

A little thought about taking a knee on the last drive of the first half - I think the fact that JT knew we were getting the first possession of the second half played into it. The first possession of a second half is often critical. It often shows adjustments made by either staff, and sets the tone for the second half. Considering what happened, I guess that tOSU's staff felt pretty good about how they played it. Can't remember a game where I saw a team not get penalized. Iowa must have have exceptional coaching. Losing Russell is a big deal. He's a smart guy who adjusts to formations well, doesn't bust coverages, and is a solid tackler. He will be missed. All in all, a tremendous effort in prime time, once again. Shouldn't hurt recruiting any.

COL FB: Ohio State 38, Iowa 17

IOWA CITY, Iowa, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Troy Smith threw four touchdown passes and Antonio Pittman ran for 117 yards and a touchdown Saturday as top-ranked Ohio State beat 13th-ranked Iowa, 38-17.
Smith completed 16-of-25 passes for 186 yards without an interception for the Buckeyes (4-0, 2-0 Big Ten), who won their second road game against a ranked opponent this season. Earlier this season Ohio State went to Texas and beat the then-second-ranked Longhorns, 24-7.
Pittman carried the ball 25 times and Anthony Gonzalez caught five passes for 77 yards with two scores for Ohio State, which has won 11 in a row dating back to last season.
Drew Tate struggled for Iowa (4-1, 1-1), which was handed it first setback of the season. The senior signal-caller completed 19-of-41 passes for 249 yards with a touchdown, but was also picked off three times.
The Hawkeyes committed four turnovers, Ohio State none.

The outcome is good. But I still question the strategy of GIVING an inferior opponent the OPPORTUNITY to come back.

You can't possibly count on multiple turnovers late in the game by a defense as a planned way to seal a game.

I am still not convinced we deploy our assets to their highest and best uses.
How in the hell are you questioning the coaching staff?

We have a 14 point lead
There are 6 minutes on the board
They HAVE to pass

There is no way that team was going to pass the ball down the field on us and score 3 times in 6 minutes. You're insane to question the play calling in the 2nd half. It was done to perfection.

No no 27... ZachDUMAS wishes we would call unnecessary passes like John L vs ND. JT has much to learn on offense...

I mean, he certainly didn't have a very diverse set of offensive sets and playcalls today or anything.

Having never played at this level let alone coached at ANY level I cant reasonably question anything our staff does but :) Other than the one pass that Smith missed TG on early in the game (although he does seem to have a great touch on the long ones he seems to have missed on at least 5 or more wide open deep passes during the season when the receiver got behind the D but Smith overthrew em) wouldnt it be helpful to have him air it our more often just to keep teams honest. Maybe Tress keeps tons of stuff in the playbook hidden for special times but just once at the end of the game can we air it out on 1st or 2nd down when the other team just knows we are gonna run out the clock by handing it to Pitt for a no gain when we are protecting a big lead; go for the jugular just once; it cant be worse than 3 and out when they are stacking the box. And please on short yardage inside the 5 can we just once fake a hand off and have Smith roll out and/or hit a tight end or somebody; we just seem way too predictable in the redzone. Successful yes but sometimes I would like to see a little razzle dazzle just to give the other teams something to think about down the line. These are minor quibles of course when you are 5 and 0 you must be doing something right, just my what if 2 cents:oh:

Yeah, during that second very long drive in the third quarter, I was thinking what a bitch it would be to be a D Coordinator and have to scheme for the Buckeyes. My head hurts just thinking about it.

I didn't keep an eye on the safeties during the game... coming into it Iowa loves keeping their safeties very deep to help out their pedestrian corner speed. That probably was why we didn't see many deep passes...

Tho I don't see what's wrong with throwing it to a WR over the middle since Iowa insists on using a LB there (Gonzo will write his thank you card when he gets home).

I love seeing that stunned Iowa crowd....all those long fat faces
i saw a guy i know sitting in the crowd. he's not an Iowa fan, but he was wearing Iowa gear. before the season, he told me he was debating whether or not to make the trip, and i told him he'd be crazy not to... (oh yeah, it's not a preposition. it's an infinitive. :p )
