Game Thread Game Five: #1 Ohio State 38, #13 Iowa 17 (9/30/06)

I think this game will be yet another tough Big 10 game. Just like yesterday, next saturday will be yet another defining moment for the '06 squad. Yesterday we learned that we can depend on our defense to come up with huge stops and turnovers, and that Pittman is a beast when the passing game stalls. These guys went to Austin and beat a good Texas team decisively. There is no doubt in my mind that they will be calling on that experience going to Iowa City, arguably a much more hostile environment. I got a feeling that Smith and the rest of the offense will be clicking if for anything else other than making up for the letdown yesterday.

What he said. Every week in the Big 10 is a battle. We'll play like crazy, they'll play like crazy, and whoever makes the least critical mistakes will win. I think I've been listening to too many JT interviews.

Apparently the professional bookies think this game will be close. I saw one spread of Ohio State only being a 5 1/2 point favorite: :yow2:

I thought that the spread would be closer to "double digits". The good news is: only having to give 5 1/2 points will make it easy for gregorylee to double his bankroll again.

The betting line continues to change. The above site now has Ohio State a 6 1/2 point favorite. I guess at 5 1/2 the betting was too much for the Buckeyes so they adjusted the point spread.

This will be Iowa's "white out" game. It won't be as wild as Penn State last year, but it will be close!
They have been pointing to this for a year!
The crowd will be suitably "oiled" .And very rowdy.
The Hawkeyes will be pumped and as well prepared as they possibly can.
They have been practicing for us for a whole year!
All they need is a wet, slippery field to turn the tide.
We will be lucky if it doesn't rain.
A wet field/rain we will lose.

Strategy for Iowa game

Ok, all I've heard before the beginning of the season was the upcoming game against Texas and for good reason. But a game that has been in my mind is the Iowa game. What do you think Tressel's strategy will be against Iowa. I still think he's not entirely showing his full arsenal and holding back. I felt that we went over a HUGE hurdle with Texas another hurdle with Penn State and now Iowa. Iowa is trouble. I think the Bucks will win but it will be a battle of the lines. If you were to guess on the strategy Tressel will use against them what would it be?

Not dropping passes... having Alex boone and the wrecking crew maintain blocks up front... having osu fans starting lots of threads

I don't imagine we'll see that many new wrinkles in this game. If OSU does a good job executing (great would be splendid, but good will do), and we can tackle Albert Young when he gets to the second level... OSU will be fine. Tate will make some plays, but I'm very confident in the pass rush and secondary. The other LBs need to catch a case of Laurinaitis.

The biggest key for the Buckeye defense will be keeping Tate between the tackles. He likes to roll out of the pocket and throw on the run or take off running. If he has to stay in the pocket he's much less effective. The Cincinnati QB was similar in that he made some big plays early in the game by rolling out to escape pressure; once he was forced to stay inside he was much less effective.

Get Alex Boone the ball, early and often.

And hope for the Matt Drummelsmith experiment to pay off. I'd tell you more, but.........I've already said to much.

Don't let Tate beat us with his feet, as Cleve stated above......keep him inside the tackles. Our linebackers have to do a better job of not getting caught up in traffic, especially anyone not name Laurinaitis. If I was Iowa I'd watch the Texas and PSU games and see how they ran the ball successfully against us. We've got to get them into 3rd and long's early and often, we can't let Tate get into a rhythm.

Offensively some long plays will be there for the taking, as will running plays.....especially outside the tackles. Iowa has a very solid defensive line, but their LB's are a bit slow. Iowa doesn't match up defensively from a speed standpoint, look for the Buckeyes to exploit that.
