Game Thread Game Five: #1 Ohio State 38, #13 Iowa 17 (9/30/06)

Hawkeye fans seem to be clinging to that '04 win more than anything else. "Remember the last time Troy Smith came to Kinnick!" seems to be their battle cry. Yup...we're overrated. Our '06 squad is really no better than the one we fielded in 2004.

That was the game Troy took over for an injured JZ with the game WELL out of hand...hardly a good measuring stick being that he was seeing his first legit game action @ QB. But I guess there is no reasoning with an Iowa fan.:wink2:

I do think this game will be close. I don't think we've found our rhythm, however, I think we are by far the more talented team. Iowa cried in 2002 that we didn't play them and then won a national title. Hopefully we can get rid of that excuse and still be able to look toward the end of the season with Michigan climbing the rankings.

Hopefully Tressel makes some changes and is able to look to Teddy and Gonzo more this game. We will see how coverage and covering Troy on possible runs go.

I would like to put that loss in some perspective.

JT has lost 13 times since coming to OSU. Four of those games were by more than a TD. Only one was by more than 13 points - and that was to Iowa in '04.

Only once has JT lost consecutive games and that was a three game streak that ended in the loss to Iowa in '04. The last two of those losses included two of his four losses by more than 7 points.

I recall the game. We were lackluster and flat. We had 27 yards rushing. Iowa had 448 yards total offense to our 177. We had one drive all day longer than 6 plays and it ended in an interception. And those 7 points we scored came on our last drive of the day.

My point is this. There was a stretch in 2004 where OSU lost its focus and was struggling to gain its identity. We came out of the Iowa game with a refocused defense and a new QB. I don't want to sound like some whiner saying that Iowa didn't deserve the win - they did. But that three game stretch was an anomaly in the five year plus history of JT at OSU. Iowa beat OSU that day, but they beat an OSU team that has not been seen before or since while JT has been here.

Iowa has a great coach whom I respect. Next week they will have the advantage of home field under the lights. But to win they need a solid line, experienced receivers and defensive team speed - not T-shirts reminding us of a rout.

When all is said and done they would be better served had they not won 33-7 in 2004.

I anticipate a big day for our offense. Iowa's line were rookies last year, but now that they 've been blooded, they're decent. Their LB's are raw, but they've recruited well (no 4*s, but have been coached up). Not sure about their DBs, but I don't know too many teams that can match up with our two top receivers, and if they can, our number 3 & 4 will run wild (Robeiskie and Hartline).

Iowa just doesn't have the talent of depth to compete with us. Syracuse should never even come close to beating them even without Drew Tate if they're really that good.

We'll cruise after the 2nd half in this one.

Bear in mind that Kirk Ferentz recruits a lot like Tressel does. Throw those "star" ratings out the window. He'll max out his talent and field a tough, competitive team. I don't care if they're young or inexperienced (sound familiar??), they'll play hard. This game is HUGE in their eyes. It's at night, in a tough stadium, this will be no easy test.

On paper, we should roll. On the Kinnick turf, however... I hope we keep our composure and get the job done.

Emphasis on composure.

I disagree with part of that. Tressel and Ferentz coach similarly, they both field great teams, and they both develop talent very well, but Iowa does not get the athletes OSU does. Of those still on rosters, OSU has recruited 16 guys in the top 10 at their position nationally. Iowa has gotten 5 in the same time. If I were to expand that to those ranked in the top 20, the disparity would become even greater.

Not to say that recruiting rankings mean everything  but the beginning talent pool we have to develop from is MUCH deeper than Iowas.

I think this game will be yet another tough Big 10 game. Just like yesterday, next saturday will be yet another defining moment for the '06 squad. Yesterday we learned that we can depend on our defense to come up with huge stops and turnovers, and that Pittman is a beast when the passing game stalls. These guys went to Austin and beat a good Texas team decisively. There is no doubt in my mind that they will be calling on that experience going to Iowa City, arguably a much more hostile environment. I got a feeling that Smith and the rest of the offense will be clicking if for anything else other than making up for the letdown yesterday.

I would say that we have similar levels of talent starting, but the depth and furthermore, the athletic conditioning of our players cannot be matched. I've yet to see any of our guys visibly tired or gassed after 3 quarters of play. Pittman gets faster and hits harder as the game progresses and it never ceases to amaze me.
