Game Thread Game Five: #1 Ohio State 38, #13 Iowa 17 (9/30/06)

I don't have the time this year to do the official game preview stuff but here's my .02 on Iowa.

They have played a 1-AA school and 3 MAC level 1-A teams(syracuse, Iowa State and Ill).

I know Tate missed the Syracuse game but the Iowa defense has allowed about 300 ypg over the past 3 to those cream puffs.

They have given up over 14ppg to ISU and SU.

All in all I know the stats aren't overwhelming and its a small sample size so I'll just give a bare bones synposis:

Iowa hasn't seen anything this year to prepare them for the speed and talent they are about to encounter. We have played 2 of our 4 games to date vs opponents with roughly equal talent and very bad intentions.

I know its at night and at their place but I place a TON of emphasis on the "big step up in opponent" variable when it comes to CFB. I don't think a night game in Kinnick Stadium is enough to overcome the step up principle and the fact we have the better team.

This could be a Saturday night, prime time media love fest that cements our #1 for the rest of the season and puts TS back in the drivers seat for the Heisman.
Agreed. I have seen nothing from Iowa which would suggest that they will be a tough test for the Buckeyes.

Of course this is easy to say now with the way the Texas game went but this will be the TOUGHEST game we have played simply because of Drew Tate.

Although, we may not have seen a QB like Tate this year yet they haven't seen quite a few units like we have yet either.....

If, the Bucks are able to rush with only 4 D-Lineman, it will be a long night for Drew Tate.

I agree......a great QB can change the complexion of a contest. Tate can play ball, but I'm not sure if Iowa has the horses to contend.

I think you are selling Iowa State a bit short.

Iowa State 45 Toledo 43 (3 OT) at home
Iowa State 16 UNLV 10 at home
Iowa State 17 Iowa 27
Iowa State 14 Texas 37

Iowa State NCAA Rank:
Total O-60th
Total D-98th
Scoring D-101st
Passing D-113th

I'd say upper tier MAC is about right.

If our offense comes out hot and gets up early and shuts the crows up a little bit, and we force tate to throw early and often we may get a couple more pick 6's and be off with this one.. anyone going over to the game?

IF Iowa plays like they did against ILL. They should be toast early.
:oh:

I didn't catch that game, but let's not get to cocky for this game. I learned my lesson this week against Penn St. Big Ten games have a way of being much closer than they should be......especially with us playing at night on the road.

Let's not forget that Iowa has been primping for this game since last year's blow-out.......DaddyP is right, let's not get cocky. They were using Illinois like we used to use Northwestern as a tune-up for Michigan (in the old days). They wouldn't show anything for the game tape breakdown, and so far they haven't really been tested. Drew Tate is a gamer, so if we can cover, and put a big rush on him, he'll start sniping at his own players (a la last year) THEN Iowa will be toast.

I anticipate a big day for our offense. Iowa's line were rookies last year, but now that they 've been blooded, they're decent. Their LB's are raw, but they've recruited well (no 4*s, but have been coached up). Not sure about their DBs, but I don't know too many teams that can match up with our two top receivers, and if they can, our number 3 & 4 will run wild (Robeiskie and Hartline).

Our defense is playing outstandingly well. Too well (in my humble opinion) for 9 new starters. We're going to be in a shootout sometime this year (last one to score will win), but for now WOW! Heacock got rave reviews on Gameplan yesterday, and he deserves them! But until then..........

Illinois was a sandwich game for Iowa just like Cinci was a sandwich game for us.

Last week they had their big rival, Iowa State, a team that has inexplicably had their number for years. They got over that hurdle, which should not be underestimated.

After ISU, they had Illinois, followed by the #1 team in the country. So their "sandwich" game played out just like ours did. They came out flat and then smoked them. As someone (Best?) mentioned, it was almost half-time with the score still 0-0. But as was not mentioned, Iowa scored 3 touchdowns before the bands took the field. This team is good, and they're gunning for us.

Will Iowa beat us? I really doubt it. They have huge match-up issues, WR & DB wise. But don't think for a minute that this will be easy.

Iowa has a good running game, but as we've seen it won't necessairly translate into points unless the O turns it over. The only way Iowa scores in the 20's is if Tate breaks contain and makes big throws. Sometimes our DE's sell out on the rush and lose contain. Also the TE's of Iowa must be neutralized, Chandler is a big target. Good weather and a fast track would benifit OSU on both sides of the ball. GO BUCKS!

OZone memories of 04...

Remembering Iowa City: With the Penn State game in the books the Buckeye can now turn their attention to next week's opponent, the Iowa Hawkeyes. That game will be played in Iowa City at night. The last time the Buckeye played at Iowa City it was also a night game and ended up as a lopsided 33-7 win for the Hawkeyes that was not really as close as the score would indicate. The Buckeyes seem to remember that game like it was yesterday and refer to the Hawkeyes as the 500 pound gorilla.

"Two years ago that's what it looked like," said OSU offensive lineman Kirk Barton.

"We looked like a bunch of little kids going against that gorilla. It was like King Kong going against a bunch of little kids. They threw us around their house.

"I was probably as embarrassed as I've ever been in my life. They're tough and not a lot of teams win in Kinnick, so we have to be outstanding in all three phases of the game if we're going to pull out a victory in Kinnick," Barton said.

"He hit it right on the head," agreed Anthony Gonzalez of Barton's remarks.

"That's the lowest that we have ever been collectively certainly since I've been here. The majority of us, that's probably the lowest we've been in anything. It's just not something that you're accustomed to.

"They beat us pretty good. We definitely took one on the chin that week.

"That was one of those games where you come back and you're not sure what's going to happen next really. We totally shuffled our lineup after that. I remember changes were being made all across the board, changes for the better, I think. That was a real eye-opener and definitely a turning point in that season."
